Casio Archives
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:52:58 am »
One thing that the Casio community currently lacks and I believe is holding it back is an archive system similar to ticalc.org. Other Casio hosting sites, are often anti-gaming, nearly dead, or rarely frequented. Although the Omnimaga archives are great they aren't as open to the public as other systems are. What I was wondering was if it would be possible to host a site dedicated to maintaining archives of programs developed for Casio calcs. There are certainly many cost considerations as hosting a site isn't free and it would also need to be structured in a way so that it wouldn't compete with existing calculator based sites. Would anyone else support a similar venture?

List of stuff I need to do before September:
1. Finish the Emulator of the Casio Prizm (in active development)
2. Finish the the SH3 asm IDE/assembler/linker program (in active development)
3. Create a partial Java virtual machine  for the Prizm (not started)
4. Create Axe for the Prizm with an Axe legacy mode (in planning phase)
5. Develop a large set of C and asm libraries for the Prizm (some progress)
6. Create an emulator of the 83+ for the Prizm (not started)
7. Create a well polished game that showcases the ability of the Casio Prizm (not started)

Actually it has already been done: http://www.casiocalc.org/to/fsdisplay.php

However it lacks news articles (Which I guess Omni remedied to, though)

I strongly agree that an archive site that allowed Casio calc submissions would be very useful, especially for new users who might have trouble learning how to install games and where to find them. If the Prizm is going to be as good at gaming as the z80 series, a good source of programs and information is crucial. All of the files that currently exist are generally spread out between the Omnimaga, Cemetech and casiocalc.org archives, so there isn't a good place where all of the programs are. If one of these forums do become the largest source of programs, things might still be tricky, since some people dislike some forums and newcomers might only notice the forums and not the files.

Version 4? sounds cool. Are you guys gonna update the  EN homepage? I think the latest news is from 2004 XD

I think there should be a database that searches P-C, UCF and omni for your prog. A casio search engine. Maybe even have a list of all add-ins.

I was thinking of just a neutral database that would provide a single source for all Casio programs and apps. Problem with any current distribution system is that they are often hard to find and intimidating for new authors. Part of the fun of ticalc.org is the wide variety of quadratic solvers available. This is an activity I wouldn't want to suppress as we all got to start from somewhere.

true, but i wouldn't mind making this my personal project. I wonder how much ticalc.org pays a month for their hosting fees.

I still think the neutral archives should be Casiocalc.org, though, because those were the neutral archives since almost a decade.

I agree that there should be some sort of center for the Casio archives, though I don't exactly see what's wrong with using an existing site.
Imho casiocalc sounds pretty good, tho I'll say casiokingdom's collection seems pretty impressive as well, also having the tutorials etc.

Both sites due to have good archive collections but they are quite limited and due not have any section dedicated to newer Prizm calcs. What I'm really looking for is a distribution system as well laid out as ticalc. One that is frequently updated with news and supports a large collection of programs and apps.

List of stuff I need to do before September:
1. Finish the Emulator of the Casio Prizm (in active development)

Yeah I wonder if 2072 would be willing to expand for the Prizm. Also the current system is quite weird. It might be good to have something like ticalc.org, although it would be hard to get the old authors to add their files to the archives.

For authors that we can't get to upload to a new site there's always the possibility of providing direct links so that at least some resource is provided to download those apps. Everything else would be hosted directly on the archive. For the domain I was considering some ideas such as:

casiozone.org
casioalliance.org
casiohub.org

what do you guys think?

Yeah that could work too and have a backup in case the links ever go down. Once the author goes to the extent of abandonning the file without keeping it online, it's time to re-add it ourselves to preserve the history, I think.

As for the domain I guess casioalliance could work. However it would have to be mainly an archive of programs, because there are already established news site and forums out there, so an extra forum would only split the community even more. Maybe something like TI-News could be added that fetches Casio-related news from Cemetech, Omni, PC, Casiocalc, etc, though.

Yeah I like that idea because I had no intention to contain a forum other than maybe comments on news articles and app reviews.

btw very off topic but since when have you had leet ratings?
