Title: Casio is working on a new touch calculator? Anti-Cheating soon?
Post by: helder7 on September 23, 2012, 04:26:53 pm
I usually search the patents belonging to various companies (like sony, apple, samsung, microsoft...) to know at first hand the technological innovations.

Recently, I decided to do a patent search of Casio and I found what may be the next Casio calculator with touchscreen technology.

Below is a draft, possibly a prototype:

Features of this "future" new calculator:
-Multitouch screen

-Possible wifi connection

-HANDWRITTEN MATHEMATICAL FORMULA RECOGNITION

-Anti-cheating feature

Hm, interesting. They're from 2010. It's interesting how there is a special case for two vertically aligned touches. Hand-writing recognition looks cool too.

That's interesting. A touch-calc would be cool :D

I don't think I've ever seen online patent images in color, so maybe it's just that (the dithering definitely looks off for something originally black-and-white)

hand-written equation support, if it worked, would be the single most useful thing i've ever seen in a calculator =D

what exactly does "anti-cheating" entail?

maybe they wanne block out assembly now as ti does? D: that would be bad

Hm, anyone else recognize that Program icon there? :P
What comes to mind for me is early phases of Casio designing the Prizm, tho maybe they eventually scrapped the touchscreen? Or maybe a re-work of the classpad.. that would be in the cp post XD
Looking at the back of my prizm none of the patent nos. match.. (tho 3/5 end with 7 somehow 0.o)

Patent US20110254857 pretty much looks like an early Prizm I think.

It's hard to say what these were for, companies are always throwing ideas for new product around. I doubt it's for the Prizm's successor though.

Wow this looks interesting. I just hope they don't take a backward step and go back to monochrome/grayscale screens. The good thing would be that it would preserve the entertainment from working around those limitations while making games and pushing the calc to its limit, but it would hurt their sale with the CX and PRIZM around.

hmm this patent for touch screen looks cool. I don't really think that this will be a grayscale calc, the combination with touch would be a total no-no IMO

Here are a few Prizm patents (even one from 2012):
http://www.google.com/patents/USD631086
http://www.google.com/patents/us20120162063
http://www.google.com/patents/us20120188274

And now compare the first patent's date with my four fx-9860G3 patents (http://ourl.ca/17074/317615). If it were also Prizm patents, they would have used a Prizm sketch. And look at the poor picture quality and the somehow simple main menu icons - all indicating a cheaper display - maybe a grayscale display with higher resolution.

a new legacy model, maybe yes, maybe no

some brands (like apple...) patent new functions, using the design of an old model... and only put on the market in the next models, and thus keeps the future designs in secret

I had seen these patents when I did my initial research, and one detail is, the  fx-9860G3 (as you called it) is touchscreen
http://www.google.com/patents?id=D6TvAQAAEBAJ

for me, makes no sense to launch a picture plot black&white, and a fx9860 G3 touchscreen...

I think this patent is related to prizm and the future mysterious touch model (but it is just my opinion :D )

And what is this? An fx-9860G3 with a high-resolution grayscale display?

They saw us with grayscale, they used that  idea! GOnna love it!

The touch screen is actually a pretty good idea, either scrapped from the Prizm or reserved for a future model. Wait, the Classpad 300 has a touchscreen, dunno if it does stuff as described in the patent though. As for the grayscale, I believe it's because the patents are printed in black and white and they should had been in color (they prolly just took a picture and they pasted it in the patent papers as is without processing so it looks like the actual pic the Prizm shows), but adding Prizm features to the 9860 would be interesting.

Also wondering if anyone checked TI's patents?
