Got it for €4. The screen has 3 horizontal missing lines in it. How do I fix it?
-
I remember guys repairng Game BOy with missing line by heating the (nappe?) sceen cable with a ironer. If you locate the good calbe, you could try heating it to make the contact again.
-
So I tried reflowing some solder on the horizontal ribbon cable, but it did not affect it. Then I found out there was another cable going to the screen for the vertical lines. That must be it, but the way it is designed means I have to desolder the horizontal ribbon in order to get to the vertical one.
-
Yikes! That sounds a bit scary. I wonder why the made it that way... ???
-
To scare me off. Lets get a needle and a soldering iron. Lets do this!
-
It was worth a try, but of course it was a gamble. Because of the horrible way they designed the calculator the screen is not servicable. I could easily have fixed it otherwise. Two ribbon cables and in order to get to the vertical one I had to desolder the horizontal one which did not end well.
-
That sucks. :/ Ah well. At least it wasn't too expensive.
-
OW.. I'm sorry for you.
-
At least everyone knows that they should never buy a casio CFX-9850GB plus with horizontal missing lines.
-
Or just cope with it.
-
OUCH x.x
That sucks x.x
-
Lol. Well I would rather have a fully functional one in my collection.
-
What if you play snake and the 'apple' is right there where it can't be displayed :P
-
I'm gonna reuse the shell and keyboard and build something else in it probably
-
Raspberry Pi case?
-
Might not fit. Maybe something a bit smaller.

^This. :P

Ooh, sounds neat! :D

A 4x4 membrane keypad matrix costs more than €4, so I still got a good deal :P

Ouch, what's the state of the screen now? From what it sounds, desoldering did nothing to make it better (might have made the screen even worse!)
Btw I have the exact model Casio CFX-9850GB+ (white version).
One of my few graphing calculators.

It sucks how they did it, preventing you from fixing the calc. Otherwise with a normal screen connector apparently it's really easy to fix. Is it true that sometimes it's just because the connection is dirty?

Ribbon is destroyed. Screen entirely dead.

The connection cannot be dirty because the ribbon cable is soldered directly to the board, but the solder can dry a bit and crack thus making a bad connection.
So when you get a calc and see there are horizontal lines missing on the screen: it's not an easy fix. It is impossible to service with a normal soldering iron. Do not attempt to fix it because it will definitely brick your calculator.
