Hello.
Does anyone still wear and use one? I do and since I was a teen(ager). Yes, I am old school and still love them. I currently wear Data Bank 150 model. I will have to get a new one one day...
Thank you in advance. :)
-
I have a Data Bank watch, but I'm not sure what model it is, but it's really useful having a calculator at all times.

Yep. Also, its alarm, scheduler, etc. too even though they are limited.

Heya and welcome here. My bro used to have one but he forgot to remove it from his wrist before going in the pool and it died. D: We could play Tetris on it. Lots of people in elementary school had such watch too.
I saw some at stores the other day. They still had an early 90's or even late 80's design, so they looked old school. Nowadays I only wear a watch at work, though.
-
I always wear a watch. I can't live without feeling it around my wrist. But mine isn't a DataBank, it's a GShock. :P
-
I always wear a watch, but I've always liked the analog with actual numbers on it. I've only had Timex's and Armitron's(I think thats how you spell it)
-
I wear a watch at all times since 1st grade.
Usually digital timex. Never had a calc watch, but it sounds pretty cool :P
-
I remember having one of those in elementary school.. I think it came with one of the book orders tho so it was prolly pretty cheap XD
And yeah I wear a watch basically everywhere too, tho just a $20 casio.

Hello ant, welcome to Omnimaga! You should head over and introduce yourself.
I had one of these watches once upon a time, but alas; like DJ_O's brother mine died in a tragic swimming pool accident as well. D:
-
I used to wear one everyday, but stopped after I got my cellphone. I am annoyed because the watch always get stuck everywhere in narrow places, plus it's annoying when I wear winter clothes x.x
-
I have one of those fancy all stainless steel watches with dual analog/digital display. Wear it everyday like I wear my glasses.
I should adjust it at the right time one time.
-
I don't have a calculator watch. I wanted one when I was young tho. (That really sounds like I'm already about 80 years old, lol)
I have an analog/digital watch tho :D
-
I have a casio protrek (with barometer, compass, and altimeter) but never had a calculator watch.
-
I want a watch with a built in soldering iron and hex screwdriver. I always need to have those around!
-
I want a watch with built in ti-nspire and 84+. I always need to have those around.
-
A CAS on a watch. That 'd be handy :D

Swag. >.>

I would prefer one of the android powered watches myself :P
-
That's so mainstream. A real hacker hacks himself a watch. Let me show you in a few weeks.

Can it run DOOM? O.O

I already saw some G-shock, but I like my watch, it's 10 years old, but I keep it everytime, everywhere! :p

Ah for me, I don't even own a mobile phone. :)
Thanks all who replied. Man, it is hard to find people who still wear these calculator watches. :(
-
Still waiting for parts...

We're waiting!

Yup. D: I think the issue, though, is how scientific calcs got cheaper over the years (other than TI ones) and the Casio calc watches did not elvolve at all. So most people would rather get a $5 scientific calc and use that rather than relying on a Casio watch. If Casio watches added more functions, then maybe they would attract more people.
Plus, nowadays you got graphing calcs that most high school students get at one point, and those calcs can play Portal 2D, Doom (or clones of it), Mario, RPGs and plenty of iPhone game clones. Of course graphing calcs are much more expensive, but the fact graphing calcs can play such advanced games kinda make calc watches less attractive to people.
@Keoni I hope you get parts soon so you can make your own watch. :D

People take their big caclulators everywhere? I only needed a sample calculator, scheduler, alarm, etc. :P

update: I need one very important part: the microcontroller which has not arrived yet. I started writing and testing the firmware a few days ago using an arduino. Now, as some of you might have heard on the IRC, it has got an onboard brainf**k interpreter and it can keep track of time and date. I wrote 10kB of code so far (compiled) and I have 20k of program space left.
It has got 3 buttons for user input and a 84*48px backlit lcd display.
This is breadboarded up for now, but when all of the parts are here I can build the watch.

wow, this is looking pretty awesome, great work! I like how you lighte the screen, they should have dat on other calculatores :P
And how do you program with three buttons? O.o
-
Well like this:
Button 2 is the mode. (notice it says mode:char) You can switch between cursor mode and "change character" mode. Button 1 and 3 are left right or increase and decrease character. Hold button 2 for 1 sec to proceed to the next step.

Custom made calculator watches? Hmm!

I dont know about other people, but I carry my prizm with me in my pocket almost everywhere. and it is my calendar, todo list, alarm clock, and calc thanks to gbl08ma's utility addin.

I hate how the screen gets covered with lint whenever you keep it in your pocket for a while. I'm thinking of making a new cover for it that keeps sweat, lint and loose change out of it.

Very nice work so far Keoni29 :)
And Flyingfisch I used to do that everytime too, or almost. I stopped when pockets started getting smaller and smaller again (although not as small as in the '90s)
-
I used to have a simple digital watch with no special math functions. My 84+ is too big to fit in my pocket comfortably. I have an emulator running on my phone though.
-
*digital
and my 84+ fits in my pocket perfectly :D So does my CX so I usually carry them both around in my pockets. :P

Pssh, the databank ones aren't old school.
These are the old school ones. Databanks are new in comparison.

Hehe, same for me (even though my 84+ is an 84+SE and my CX is a CX CAS) :P
And when people ask me what time it is, I usually put my hand in my pocket, they expect me to take my phone out, and then I lol at their face when they see me taking a calc out XD
-
I don't know, I still like watches a bit too much.
Besides, my calc RAM clears all the time :P

Same for me, and this allows to do even funnier things :P
When they ask me what time it is, I first take my 84+SE out from my pocket, they look at me like I am E.T. then I say "wrong one" (because the time is wrong since the last RAM Clear) and take out the CX CAS from the other pocket and tell them the time while they look at me like I am (E.T.)² XD

Well I checked Google for images of the Databank ones, and they still look kinda old school. The one you posted looks like it was designed in the early 80's (back when every electronic was rectangular-shaped) and the Databanks I saw on Google looked like 1989-92 electronics :P.
-
Well, they're all a little older than that. The first calc watch came out in '75, but the first databank came out in '83. So, your timing was about right, just off by a few years.
-

Imagine your watch would RAM clear all the time :P
-
I had a watch like that once. The battery had a bad connection.

Oh Ok. Funny, though, how the design of the first calc watch hasn't even changed at all since then. At Zellers (which is being replaced by Target) a few weeks ago, I saw one exactly like that.
-
Yup. Their design is identical, but the price just keeps dropping. Now you can get one for around $20 at Wal-mart.

I had a watch just like that! :D

That, my friend is awesome. :D I wondered why you were asking for font info for the other day (for a watch) This explains it! :D
*edit*
I'm kind of surprised you haven't made a topic about it showing off the process etc.

Progress:

This is just the strap with a little box on top of it. I have to drill holes for the buttons and make a top to cover up everything that's not the lcd. I will paint it.
Here's a link to the devlog http://ourl.ca/17749

I totally missed this when this was posted, but really good job! Have you made further progress on it? It is starting to look like what you might see in some futuristic movies from the '80s. :P
-
I did make some firmware updates which include a little music player, but not much new stuff has been done ever since. I tried to fit a battery in it, but the original cr2030 batteries could not supply enough current for the backlight and the speaker, so I might have to get another type of battery.
-
Oh a music player sounds cool. It must be annoying for classmates, though. :P
Sorry to hear about the battery, though.
-
I missed it too....it is looking cool! Nice work! :D
