MatLab
« on: January 31, 2011, 09:42:24 am »
Hello,

I decided to create a topic about Matlab.

Has anyone tried Matlab? Unlike Python, C and Java, etc, it's paid and it's not 'batteries included', so most extra libraries need to be paid and they cost a lot! Thousands of euros!

I'm going to have to learn it in the first year of university (if I go to computer engineer).

So, I will probably give it a try someday. For now, wondering if someone tried it already.

No, I didn't used MatLab.
But I guess you won't worry much about it because generally the university provides free licenses to its students for all required software or computers with it. After learning some programming languages, the differences generally are subtle and MatLab seems to be a usual one but more math oriented.
And depends on university and course, sometimes you go straight to other programming language (commonly Java or C).

I've tried it and all I can say is that the UI is a perfect example of what *not* to try to emulate. other than that, it's decent as far as mathematical software goes. It's not as good as something like Mathematica at very complicated problems, but it's perfectly capable of handling reasonable problems.

My University goes this way:
Python and MatLab in first year (20% discount for MatLab, but everybody gets it illegally)
C and Java in second year
ActionScript and Something-Else-That-Is-Not-DotNet (you choose it).

Yeah, I use it a couple times a week at Purdue.  My teachers were amazed when I showed them a 'for loop'...
Its UI really sucks, but the whole thing isn't too bad.

indeed.
noobnonin, please don't necropost (that is, post a response in a thread that has been dead for more than a couple of months, let alone years as this one has been).

I have the feeling that the recent upsurge in necroposting is either because of the messed up topic sorting (threads showing up multiple times accross pages) or Halloween approaching.
In case you are wondering where I went, I left Omni back in 2015 to form CodeWalrus due to various reasons explained back then, but I stopped calc dev in 2016 and am now mostly active on the CW Discord server at https://discord.gg/cuZcfcF

Well, Halloween = creepiness and all necro-related things are creepy. That or a ghost is bumping topics in the list. :P

Every year I noticed that necroposting is more common in October. Of course, that's when most new calc owners got used to their calcs and sign up to forums, so it might be due to people not being used to forum netiquette, but sometimes even established members do it more than usual that month. United-TI had the same problem, but much worse. :P
