Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 22, 2006, 08:30:00 am
I have resumed working on Pokemon Purple again. :)smile.gif

I plan on getting all the Pokedex stuff done first, and get that out of the way, and then get back to the map. I think my only slowdown will be the conversions of the pics to b&w, and then to hex. After that, things should move right along.

Oh, it is far from it! :D

Thanks to Mathstuf, I now have them all easily set at 32x32 bitmaps, so all I have to do is open them up in PAINT, set the zoom to 800%, and turn on the grid, and I can see each "pixel" that makesup the pokemon. Since I am shooting for black and white, I will be porting over the first pokemon, bulbasaur, and posting the before and after image.

I hope to have this completed sometime tonight. :)smile.gif

Yay! Glad to see some progress.

Btw: When you choose the zoom in paint, you can click on an area just below 8x, one pixel above the bottom line of the box.

That will get you a 10x zoom ^^

I have the first converted to hex!! I am plugging the data into the calc now, see what happens... I *should* be posting screenshots very soon...

I was already told about the one pixel missing, but please take into account that this was done from paint, and ported to hex, by eye. :)smile.gif

O_O wow MathStuf really knows his scripting

I had the greatest idea for the item system, and I can't believe I didnt see it before. >.<

I will have a For( loop to go through the list and deteriming if list element is >0. My only problem that I see thus far is exiting the For loop... I might have to do a While loop... Anyways, in this manner, it will retain some of its dynamic abilities, on not displaying what isn't there, and displaying what is. :)smile.gif

Anyways, I have to determine the longest item name, and then see how well that displays on the screen within the item menu screen, and will have a sub("string" system to display the item names.

I will try to make a screenshot of that once it is implemented. I hope the above made some sense...

Nice bulb sprite! Which version is it from? I can't recognize it; unless its the small icon used in the menu in Advanced generation of games. The angle used is right for that.

Glad to see PP back in action. ^^ I hope you have a good idea on how to store all the text for dex entries.

It is the icon for FireRed/Leaf Green. :)smile.gif

And no, not yet... I am workin on it though. ;)wink.gif I figured if I could port 2 images a day, I would have all images converted to hex in 2 months, while I work on the other aspects of Pokemon.

Horrifying discovery...

The sprite data just for the Pokemon (all 151) will be around 42000 bytes in size. Gonna require some mad skillz programmin that all in...

youchy... good luck on it, though...

how about making a lil prgm that takes a pic and translates the sprites to hex?

if you were using 32X32 asm sprites, it could concievably take as little as 19584 bytes for 153 32X32s...hmm...I ought to look into this.

The ivy sprite's looking nice. But realizing the size of all the sprites is different, but forced the same size here, you should have some way of telling the size difference between a Rattata and a Gyarados. ;)wink.gif

Post by: tifreak on June 24, 2006, 02:31:00 am
Yeah, trust me, I have been giving it some thought... Once I get the pics all converted, I will see what can't be done...So far, there are a lot of lines at the top that are blank.

@necro: That sounds cool, but I am still shooting to make as much of this game in BASIC as possible... And even if it were to be asm, it would require the program to be split in two, since I need several programs to be unarchived for it to even run.

I am glad that you guys like the sprites so far. :)smile.gif I am going to make a page on my site so I can post them all up...

nice work! :thumb:thumb.gif The sprites are awesome, good spriting! Out of curiosity, whats your method for displaying sprites again, wasn't it a basic hex to sprite decoder?

Yeah, http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/385/38508.html

I really need to get that updated though... I will try to submit the updated version soon.

And thank you. :)smile.gif I am glad they are turning out well enough with out all the "shading".

I hope to be able to get 2 more done tonight...

Very nice Venusaur!

If I haven't brought it up already, remember you have the sprites of your guys facing the other way in battle too. Double work then.

And unrelated, will you put in any of the old glitches? At least http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glitch_City? Not the Mew glitch, because if I recall correctly Mew would be available in PP after beating both versions?

This is a screenshot of the item screen. The bottom box is for an icon for the TM/HM, but I need to make one that is decent first. ;)wink.gif

The little 6 pixel long space at the bottom of each icon is where the indicator will go, to denote which section you are on.

Yeah, I have planned on adding it, in a very basic sense. Basically, you will be able to determine what pokemon you have caught, seen, etc, and that is it. No info will probably be added.

You are the bomb!!! ^_^

Thank you so much! Adding it now!

Oh yes, I am sure you will be wondering how the controls will work:

Up/Down will of course look at the current screen to select...
Left/Right will allow you to go from page to page.
Graph will allow you to go through the sections. I am debating about putting in a back function on that, but I might use the button next to it for that purpose.

Well, I have it now to where it displays 9 items on the screen, and the amount of each item, except it will not show the name of the first item. This should be fixed soon. I will post an animated screenshot once that is fixed, and the cursor system is going.

does it works fine now?
Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 27, 2006, 02:50:00 am
Yeah, the display function works great now... I might have to write up a tutorial on it. :)smile.gif

Now to just make the selection system work, which shouldn't be too hard...
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Radical Pi on June 27, 2006, 11:28:00 am
So PP's item bag will be separated into pockets? Keep in mind they didn't do that until GSC: in RBY you had a max storage of 20.
Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 27, 2006, 02:41:00 pm
Well, there are 29 normally used items, another 20 or so key items, and the few pokeballs. I didn't feel like messing with that, and you will only be able to get one line of items, with a max of 99.

And this adds something different that the older ones didn't have. :)smile.gif Kinda sets my game a lil further apart.

Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 28, 2006, 08:13:00 am
Well, the ROM on the web is around 700 KB I believe... (I dled it in a short time on dialup, so...) I will be leaving out the text that describes the Pokemon, since it never really added anything about the Pokemon to me...

Also, I have the items displayer to go through the pages without error for normal items, so the key items, Pokeballs, and TMs and Hms should be cake. I will just be a matter of doing some variable changing and calling that part of the program. ;)wink.gif

The bad news...

I will need to get all the Pokemon and their stats programmed into the game before I can fully test out the items system. And yes, I know, this totally bites. It maybe a month or two before I get to test the item system. :(sad.gif I will try to get it to select the other "pockets" before worrying about it, since that would simply leave me with just makin the selection and detection work.

Edit: Oh, and I am so writin up an advanced tutorial on this. This system would rock in RPGs. :D Would you like me to give an animated screenie of what is there thus far?
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Speler on June 28, 2006, 09:07:00 am
Yes, I would like an animated screenie myself, I am greatly interested in this project.  Is there no other way to test the item selection, like setting random values to the data temporarily?
Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 28, 2006, 12:06:00 pm
Not really... I need the correct things set in place, so it will know which pokemon used what, etc... I will see about uploadin that screenie shortly... ;)wink.gif

How many items there is in the game? o.oblink.gif
Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 29, 2006, 05:00:00 am
I think between normal items, key items and Pokeballs, there are 56 different items. Then there are also 50 TMs and 6 HMs.
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Radical Pi on June 29, 2006, 08:13:00 am

Spellshaper is correct... There will be a secret one... But, you have to beat one version of the game. ;)wink.gif

Just for the laughs, I want to name it either 0wn3d or pwned, and have it wipe out any opposing Pokemon, and have 5 moves. :)smile.gif I am thinkin about makin it learnable by Mewto only... What do you all think??
Title: PP is back!

O_o w00t
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Radical Pi on June 29, 2006, 09:16:00 am
Learnable only by Mew. He learns every TM/HM.

Make it a Calc-type attack; super effective to everything. ^^

Unrelated: give the enemies a decent AI. Like for wild pokemon, they are fighting to survive. So moves like Teleport they would use first. And trainers... should fight to win. Set up winning combos, sacrifice someone, just be smarter than the game's trainers were.
Title: PP is back!
Post by: tifreak on June 29, 2006, 02:43:00 pm
While I would so love to do that... You have to think of the requirements this game is going to make on just memory alone... We shall see though...
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Radical Pi on June 29, 2006, 11:16:00 pm
Please, the current AI is the reason people think this game is childish and easy. Remaking the original would mean disaster.
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Spellshaper on June 30, 2006, 12:21:00 am
I always had the feeling the was no AI, but pure chance... randint(
Title: PP is back!
Post by: MathStuf on July 02, 2006, 12:18:00 pm
It did have AI, but I agree, it was not the hardest thing in the world. I fall trainers could switch/use items, battles would become a lot harder. Same if they actually saw the benefit of defense moves.
Title: PP is back!
Post by: Radical Pi on July 02, 2006, 12:59:00 pm
I noticed some Gym Leaders use X-items to raise stats. Brock once used a Full Restore O_o.
I'll be hoping for opponents at the same intelligence level of online battling. So NO RANDINT(!!! :ninja:ninja.gif
