The challenge is to get a decent looking version of that map onto the calculator screen. Or come up with a nice way to present a full sized version of it. Any takers?
-
It needs to fit in the screen, right?
-
Is scrolling possible?

Is scrolling possible?
I was thinking the same thing. if not, then that map is gonna get smashed pretty bad.
-
Maybe one pixel gray line for roads, 2x2 for cities? 1 pxl black line for outlines?
-
i just tried a quick scaling in gimp and it got pretty much destroyed.. the location tiles were 5x5 pixel squares.
-
I could do scrolling, and just treat it as another tilemap, but I would really rather not. I would much perfer to be able to see the map as a whole, as it is suppose to be an overview. That way if you view something like the locations of all Pidgey dens you see all of them in one shot.
As for getting it smashed, I don't think so. You can almost treat it as a 16x16 tilemap that needs to be smushed to 8x8. The tiles shouldnt be too hard to port
-
Ah, what the hell, I'll give it a shot. It just has to fit on the screen right? Or do you want it to take up the entire screen?
EDIT: It actually turned out pretty good.
-
That converted pretty well actually. Nice work :)
-
See thats exactly what I was looking for excellent. Press C to view the map
-
Nice job! ;D
-
Are you going to put anything in that empty space to the right? If not I can probably fill it up with some random pokemon related things like the Gameboy Tower in Pokemon Stadium.
-
Go ahead an fill it with random stuff. Unless you can think of some useful info to put there. You also might want to center the map and use the 8 pixels on either side
-
Yeah, I was thinking of doing that. I'll try to think of something worth putting there, but will most likely just end up as random stuff.
I haven't done pokemon sprites in a while, this is going to be interesting ...
EDIT:Okay, I did something simple, yet distinctive.
-
Looks pretty good, check it
-
Do you have the 8x8 sprites for the trainer, pidgey and cursor? It would look a little awkward with them taking up a huge part of the map.
-
Looks awesome! I may have to
steal borrow that for Pokemon TI.
-
Wow pretty nice, the border you added. And you kept it true to Pokemon series by putting Pokeballs too

Nope, could you or someone else make these too?
It would also be helpful if someone could create a mockup of the pokedex layout, so it fits on the calc screen. Here are the originals:

I'll see what I can do.
EDIT: They turned out alright.
-
seems kinda nice to me. It should fit pretty well
-
Thanks. Hey Buckeye, I need a copy of your alphabet so that I can align all the text in the pokedex pages.
-
Here you are:

I'm pretty sure whats what I'm using now. Its been so long since I even looked at it :/
Also in regards to your 8x8s they look pretty good, but I'm going to touch them up slightly.
-
That's fine.
The font looks a little big for the main Pokedex screen, so I'm just going to make letters more suited to the screen.
EDIT:Here's what I got. It turns out a 5x5 font looks pretty good.
-
Mhmm I wonder if it would be better if there was some grayscale added to some parts of the screen, or maybe the borders? It looks nice, but I think it might look a bit weird to have most of the game mostly grayscale then suddently a monochrome screen.
-
Yeah, I know. Right now I'm just getting the format of it right for Buckeye. I can always add more details later.
Also, here's the Pokedex entry.
-
Aaah ok I see ^^
And that one looks pretty nice so far too.
-
Oddly enough, the menus were pretty much monochrome and plain. The only gray on them were those little box strings.
-
Aaah ok. I guess if it doesn't have that much grayscale, it might be best to leave them as they are, altough it might depend of BuckeyeDude

That, and the pokeballs signifying which Pokemon you've caught.
