Title: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: BuckeyeDude on June 19, 2010, 11:05:34 pm
I'll post any help I need for recreating my Pokemon Red clone.

1. Map Making
How to create maps:
1. Goto http://group.revsoft.org/Pokemon (http://group.revsoft.org/Pokemon) and download all the files in there
2. Pick a map from the list below you want to recreate.
3. Run calcgs and find your map on the following site: http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy/pokerb/index.html (http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy/pokerb/index.html)
4. Open the appropriate tile set in calcgs, make sure you set the tiles to 16x16, and open the map editor
5. Recreate the map. If you are missing tiles, go ahead and add them at the end of the tileset. THE SECOND YOU DO THIS PLEASE POST THEM HERE!!!!! Its also very important that you have the most current tileset, or else your map will not work correctly in game. You can find them on the revsoft ftp link above
6. When you've finished your map, go ahead and upload it somewhere and post it here. I'll add it to the game and post the new version if it is accessible.

Maps Done:
Pallet Town
Route 1
Viridian City
Route 2
Route 21
Route 22
Route 4 - Nemo
Route 3 - Nemo

Maps Claimed:
Pokemon League - Sircmpwn
S.S. Anne - Sircmpwn
Lavender Town - Sircmpwn
Route 6 - Nemo
Route 7 - Nemo
Route 9 - Nemo
Route 10 - Nemo
Route 12 - Magic Banana

Maps Left:
Celdadon City
Cerulean City
Cinnabar Island
Diglett's Cave
Mt. Moon
Pewter City
Pokemon Tower
Viridian Forest
Vermilion Forest
Route 5
Route 8
Route 11
Route 14
Route 15
Route 16
Route 17
Route 18
Route 19
Route 23
Route 24
Route 25

I think I may still be missing some, let me know if I left any out.

2. Character Making
I also thought of another way you guys can help. There is an enormously large character list to be ported here (http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy/pokerb/sheet/8728)
They all need to be ported. I'd like them all as bitmaps, with one character per image so they can easily be imported into spasm. Here is an example (http://cid-7786b82c41a3d084.photos.live.com/self.aspx/Pokemon%20Sprites/MainChar.bmp). If you choose to do this, it is very important the order that the animation series comes in!!!
1. Standing facing down
2. Standing facing up
3. Standing facing left
4. Walking down
5. Walking up
6. Walking left
When creating these, make sure your dark gray is the color #444444 and your light gray is #808080, or colors very close to these. If the grays don't come like this, i would recommend using GIMP or something similar to do a color replace on them. The mask color (everything transparent) should be dark gray.

From now on, if any map editor would like to have a new sprite, ask me first.  I will be responsible for keeping the sprite sheets in sync.

Yeah it needs to remain organized so no sprite sheets conflicts and results in loss of data or total mess.

I would like to help some with this when I get back so if someone can just sign me up for something random or a couple things. Doesn't bother me which. I just want something to do :)

Also just sign me up for as many as needed.

Is there any way I can port Pokémon?
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: TIfanx1999 on June 20, 2010, 10:09:25 am
What exactly are you asking? Do you mean: "Would it be possible to port the version Buckeye is creating (once it is completed) to a different calculator (Z80 or 68K)? Or are you asking if it is possible to port the original pokemon rom to a different platform?

Haha, sorry for the confusing question. Iḿ asking if there's any way I can add more pokemon to the existing game. IE, add geodude, etc.

Do you mean adding more than the original Pokemon Red ones? I did not play much so I don't remember completly which Pokémon are from the first or latest versions

He just wants to know if I need any of the pokemon stuff recreated or anything, just stuff in general that would make development go faster.

I looked at the Spriter's Resource page, and it appears to be missing some maps.

This website should have all of them:
http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GB-GBC/index.htm#PokemonRBY (http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/GB-GBC/index.htm#PokemonRBY)

I can't wait to see this finished! ;D
Kinda makes me want to really kick Pokemon TI into overdrive.

Sircmpwn if you could please rip the tiles from here (http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy/pokerb/sheet/29863) that have the pokeballs on the cart thing (not the monitor, since thats not visible from the counter :/) and add them to the tileset, then i can add that animation

Sure, I'll try and get those done for you later tonight.

Hey, I'd like to help out as well. I guess I'll start on something small, Diglett's Cave seems fine. Also, I don't recall there being a 'Vermilion Forest'.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 21, 2010, 10:00:50 am
We don't yet have forest or cave sprites, I'm afraid.  I'll be working on those later today.  For now, maybe you could work on a route that is not yet taken.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: Magic Banana on June 21, 2010, 01:31:25 pm
Yeah, I was wondering why none of the tiles could be found. Well, if you need them, I got all the tiles for Diglett's Cave in bitmaps.

EDIT:Forgot to pick a route. Um, I guess I'll take route 12. That sounds like a nice place.
I'll just put the zip up in case you want them.

EDIT2: Is there any difference between all the water tiles? it seems like there are 4 copies of each one.

Post please.  You will save me work ;)
I'm actually pretty backed up with tiles right now.  The current (unpublished) sprite sheet has something like 30 new tiles.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: Magic Banana on June 22, 2010, 02:12:25 am
Ok, well here it is. Also, you are missing the tiles for those small 'v' flowers. There are 2 of them.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 22, 2010, 02:13:49 am
Yeah, I have those v flowers done.  I'm backed up for sprites ATM, I don't want to release an incomplete set.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: Magic Banana on June 22, 2010, 02:19:32 am
Ah, alright. Are you having trouble finding them or does it just take a long time to get them together? If you want, I can rip all the tiles and separate them into bitmaps.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 22, 2010, 11:21:07 am
Naw, they are just hard to put together.  I have a lot of sprite requests.

how many total sprites does Pokémon Red have, btw?
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 22, 2010, 01:33:43 pm
Probably 151.  Its a port, not a clone, so the goal is to make it exactly the same.
This does not include Missing No, who is also planned to make an appearance.
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help

woops, sorry for confusion. I also meant tiles as well
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 22, 2010, 01:36:03 pm
Ah.  Well at the moment there are upwards of 300 tiles, so probably a lot XD

Does this mean the glitchy block form of Missingno, or all of them (including the fossils from the Museum)?
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: SirCmpwn on June 22, 2010, 01:37:25 pm
Well, I would hope that Buckeye implements the same glitch to include all sprites of Missing No.

darn... that's sure a lot o.o. That's like 19200 bytes of tile data, assuming they're all 16x16 grayscale o.o (16x16 tile = 4 8x8 tile and 4 level grayscale = two tiles)

I'm glad it's easier than in 2002 to make Flash APPs now. When the SDK costed money it sucked x.x

I'll take Mt. Moon and Viridian Forest, but we need another tileset for both, it'd probably make sense to combine them

I can probably make the tileset(s) though, if nobody is doing it already
Title: Re: Pokemon Red Help
Post by: BuckeyeDude on June 25, 2010, 06:33:23 pm
Go for it. I just need the tile data, and tilesets keep me from stealing all the user's ram. And allow me to handle collision easier. And keep me from using 16 bit tile indexing
