Anime and Manga / Re: Haruhi Suzumiya
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:18:31 pm »
Ah yes, Haruhi... It's perhaps simultaneously one of the most well loved and the most controversial series among serious anime fans...

It's originally based on a series of Light Novels (not manga, but not quite as dense as classic literary novels), which are packed full of intellectual jokes and conversational physics and the like. Basically, they were made for nerds to love, and they succeeded.

The anime actually dumbs it all down a little, hoping to reach a more diverse audience (although, as a rule, the audience for ANY anime other than Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece is extremely limited, even in Japan). In any case, a lot of people love the anime (myself included), but just as many absolutely hate it for various reasons.

As it stands, it's perhaps my favorite anime of all time (it sits alongside only two other series that I have given perfect 5/5 scores, out of more than one hundred titles I have watched). Actually, my current avatar is a parody of it something related to it...

For better or worse, Haruhi is an otaku icon, and it's going to stay that way for a long time to come. The second season which aired last year (after three years of waiting) pissed a LOT of people off for a certain reason (specifically, Endless Eight... think "groundhog day," except drawn out over 8 episodes of the season)...
Anyway, I recommend everyone watch at least the first season at some point in their anime career, but it might be a good idea to get a a good number of more conventional titles under your belts first.

is Sola hentai? (noticing Genolo voted for it) :P
( ¯◡◡¯·)
Not quite. Just your standard sorta-supernatural romance anime.

Anyway, I'll put in votes for... let's see... how about:
Kanon
And... School Days (again, to make another tie)

Holy crap, 21? I don't think I've ever been able to sit through more than 15 or so.
This also reminds me of how sad the amount I've been able to watch recently is... I barely manage to get one ep in per day now, with school and everything. I guess it also comes down to me having been a little bored with the anime I'm watching. I'm only really maintaining interest in my weekly shows, and since they only come out on a weekly basis (duh), I don't have much to watch... I think next season I'll pick up more shows than I'm watching now, and then I'll hopefully be able to revitalize my interest in anime, so that I can have a little more enthusiasm in the future.

Anime and Manga / Re: Anime News

Oh shit Geno, I have suddenly fallen for your theory instead of whatever more generic theory with the same basic conclusion I was previously supporting. And for one very simple reason. You drop the title in your rationale. "Code Geass" makes sooooo much sense. In fact, after reading that, nothing else really does make sense!

In other news, I think I'll talk about some other upcoming anime I'm looking forward to.
High School of the Dead, a popular ecchi/survival horror manga, is being given an anime adaptation some time this year. Probably easy to mess up the more subtle features of it, but, due to its ecchi nature, the anime will always have something entertaining to fall back on.

Additionally, Mai-HiME is supposed to get another anime added to its list of spinoffs and sequels. I haven't watched any of the Mai-Otome series yet, so I can't speak for the quality of derivative works so far, but Mai-HiME itself was actually pretty good, despite the infamous cop-out ending.

This coming season (Spring 2010), I'm especially looking forward to Angel Beats, which is a collaborative "mixed media" project involving the ever-beloved Visual Arts/Key VN studio. Key's Visual Novels had all been previously animated by KyoAni (there was some Toei stuff too but it sucked and nobody cared), but this time, they are working with PA Works (an animation studio) to write and animate an original story. I've watched a PV online and I have to say I've been given a lot more confidence in the ability of another studio (other than KyoAni that is) to work effectively with Key.

I know I don't have much right to talk about site issues yet, but if you have an anime and manga section, why not add a little further organization to your off topic areas and throw in a gaming section too? There's really nothing to loose...

I'll weigh in on Eva too, since the thread has drifted that way...
Evangelion, to me, is fascinating for more than what it is by itself, if that makes any sense. Evangelion is sort of an extension of its creator, Hideaki Anno, a man of very little confidence and a rather depressive nature. Basically, it started out and was always intended to be a run-of-the-mill mecha action anime, but over the course of its development, Anno lost faith in his fans, his industry, and his profession, and decided to send a somewhat dark and controversial message instead.
At least, this is how I see it...

Anyway, it's interesting for many reasons, and it's certainly considered to be one of the most influential anime ever created, or even perhaps the absolute most important period. I like it, and there is a lot more to say about it (specifically the events leading up to the ending and interpreting what, exactly, the ending actually is), but I'll leave my comments on it at this for now.

I could talk about some of my favorite anime now, but my preference deviates pretty harshly genre-wise from the titles that have been listed so far...
I'm in to romance, drama, slice-of-life, that sort of thing... I guess I'll say this. I love Kyoto Animation the most out of all the animation studios. They created Full Metal Panic (except for the first season), Air, Kanon, Clannad (these last three are all stories from visual novels written by Key), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and K-On.
FMP is a comedy/action/romance combination series...
Air, Kanon and Clannad are Romance stories...
Haruhi is in a genre by itself...
Lucky Star and K-On are both slice-of-life, but Lucky Star is more of a comedic parody anime while K-On is focused on the moe factor.
