I have Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit (on a certain different computer), and it's problem is, it doesn't BSOD, freeze, or crash. I have a need for it to do one of those in some way, intermittently (preferably the timing being settable), under my control and entirely covertly. Any suggestions?

I did resize it before. Well, I just went ahead and reinstalled Windows with two partitions again. Is there a way to remove the "System Reserved" partition (  ) without needing to install yet again? I can live with it as-is if not.

DrDnar: How would I set it to "active"? Wasn't it already active? And, the BIOS recognizes the HDD fine, but I don't see a setting pertaining in any way to partitions in the BIOS.
Codebender: The hard drive was previously damaged in a fall, but I don't want to pay to buy a new one, and as I said it properly before. However, indeed, it has been corrupted in the past. As for seeing what's going on, even Windows Setup from the disk will show the filesystem fine - but I'm not succeeding in rebuilding this boot sector 0 thing!

Well, but even older calcs didn't usually have /sawdust/ in the screen.  And yeah, the extra layer trapped it  Next time it won't be an older model, so won't have that.

Aww. I was annoyed by the other partition being there, and didn't need two partitions in Windows XP or Windows 7. But if there's no other way then I'll do that (recreate a new partition and then reinstall the bootloader).

I should be able to use only one partition; I do not want two. And TheCoder, it's a laptop with two partitions, not a desktop with two hard drives

So I installed Windows Vista Business x64 (had no choice, that's that) on a laptop. When I did, I had two partitions, one being about 2GB the other like 65GB. I told it to install on the larger one (and of course during install I couldn't delete the smaller, it wanted it). So after install I deleted the little one, and in a word it'll no longer boot (no bootable devices found). I already tried Startup Repair from the install disc and running bootsect.exe, to no effect. I really don't want to have to reinstall Vista; it was a big hassle, drivers were all in too. Any help?

Yay it arrived!  I'm sorry about the sawdust; I knew it was there, but try as I might to remove it, it kept coming back in. And I was hoping it wouldn't get broken somehow in international transport.

harold: Indeed the Atom is a possibility. Eeems: No, I actually like the interface of what I've seen or used (Ubuntu, Mint, really old Red Hat) just fine, but what I can't stand is the kooky(aka not-ntfs or fat) file system, inability to run .exe files easily (it was continually trying to open programs as archives), and driver difficulties. And yeah, I will start a topic about it after I get well started on the first prototype - I need to choose the wood as well - and while I'm at it I bet we'll need to make a new Linux topic

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to keep you updated! Well as to OS, Windows I'm sure; I can't stand Linux. But as to what type, that's under consideration right now, because wood is a great insulator of heat, so I'll need it to run cool. Any suggestions of laptops you know to run cool? So far the only recommendation is "one with a Pentium M".
