Casio Calculators / Re: Compiling stuff for Prizm
« on: March 13, 2013, 04:43:13 pm »
I have attached a small script using the optlnk.exe program that allows you to extract all modules from a Casio SDK library.
For the SDK startup/linker object files, only the symbol and section names are listed.

Casio Calculators / Re: Casio Prizm documentation
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:46:43 pm »
I took a small look into the emulator MPU DLLs and have made a listing of modules not described in the SH7705 and SH7724 PDFs.

SH7291 (2003 - 2011)
- FLCTL NAND Flash Controller
- Cmod C-specification module
- 64k or 256k boot code ROM

SH7337 (2005 - 2009)
- FLCTL NAND Flash Controller
- AIF Audio Controller
- SD Card Controller for SDSC
- Cmod C-specification module

SH7355 (2009 - 2011)
- Similar to SH7337
- No further information is known

SH7305 (2011 - current)
- FLCTL NAND Flash Controller with ECC
- SPU2 Sound Processing Unit
- SD Card Controller for SDHC
- Cmod C-specification module
- Cmod2A C-specification module

FLCTL seems to be described in the SH7780 PDF and its technical update.
FLCTL with ECC could be the one described in the SH7786 PDF.
SD Card Controller is under NDA.
SPU2 is under NDA, so should the AIF Audio Controller.
Cmod contains the Casio-specific extensions and is under NDA.

The sound units might be a hint towards Casio's electronic dictionaries. Thus, the SH7355 (based on SH7705) may have components not relevant to calculators, and continues to function like an SH7337 on these machines.

Concerning the Casio modules themselves, here is a list of registers:

Have a look at the Windows device manager and check whether Windows actually recognizes a connected USB device. Then manually assign the CESG502 driver if it isn't doing this automatically.

Look for CESG502.SYS in your driver directory.

Under Windows XP: .\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Under Windows 7 (64-bit): .\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers
Under Windows 7 (32-bit): .\Windows\system32\drivers

- install the latest FA-124 from edu.casio.com (this will install a 32-bit or 64-bit driver)
- connect the USB cable to your calculator
- go to Link menu and set USB as the cable type, then press [F2] for "Receiving..."
- Windows should detect the new hardware and register the FA-124 driver for this device
- if it does not work: connect the calc to another USB port
- press the "Connect" symbol in FA-124 (the calc still shows "Receiving...") to enable PC communication

News / Re: Casio will Release a new Classpad fx-CP400 with color screen!
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:00:29 pm »
The original ClassPad 300 has a 16 MB ROM chip and an 8 MB RAM chip (as part of an ASIC). We can expect the fx-CP 400 to feature a 64 MB ROM chip and a 32 MB RAM chip (stores most of the OS during operation). Processor should be the same as on their latest ClassPad 330 Plus: SH7305 with higher clock speed.

In this day and age there is just no good reason to intro a new device that requires a stylus.

Appears to be a financial decision. They also don't have a sensor that automatically switches the display to landscape mode - you have to press a button on the screen. Anyway, maybe this is the last time we see innovations in the calculator market. A few years from now, most schools will probably allow any math smartphone apps or simple calculators only. Those high-end devices like ClassPad 400 and Nspire CX may be the last of their kind. D:

Casio Calculators / Re: Casio Prizm documentation
« on: October 19, 2012, 05:14:25 pm »
Based on the discovery that a Prizm can communicate with FA-124 via the 3-pin port, I looked in the Link menu code to see if this can be achieved via USB as well... and guess what: The Prizm still supports the legacy fx-9860G/GII USB communication! :D

In OS 1.04 you have to disable the two branches at 0x801B12E0 and 0x801B12EA. The first one seems to be related to the USB cable setting and the second one to the USB communication type.

Once done, pressing [F2] will cause Windows to look for the Casio CESG502 driver (comes with FA-124) to install the Prizm hardware. However, FA-124 is not going to recognize the Prizm - but Simon's tools do now!

Is the SB-88 cable RS232 compatible? As in, does it generate a COM port?
Communication takes place via a COM port number.

What is that cable? Is it a special Casio calc cable or a standard cable under a different name?

SB-88 is a USB-to-3pin-cable from Casio included in FA-124 USB.
SB-87 is a RS232-to-3pin cable and SB-89 is a standard USB-A-to-USB-mini-B cable.

However, buy the SB-88 cable only if you need compatibility with FA-124. It is really really slow and does not come with a 64-bit driver. Better get a Digitus USB-to-RS232 adapter plus a RS232-to-3pin cable from the web.

Out of curiosity, I tried this today: SB-88(A) cable + FA-124 2.00 + fx-cg 20.
Surprisingly, it works... but slowly. :D

Here are a few Prizm patents (even one from 2012):
http://www.google.com/patents/USD631086
http://www.google.com/patents/us20120162063
http://www.google.com/patents/us20120188274

And now compare the first patent's date with my four fx-9860G3 patents. If it were also Prizm patents, they would have used a Prizm sketch. And look at the poor picture quality and the somehow simple main menu icons - all indicating a cheaper display - maybe a grayscale display with higher resolution.
