General Calculator Help / Re: New CX CAS OS......Worth upgrading?
« on: December 11, 2013, 06:34:15 pm »
Hi,

Some TI-Planet content is available in both english and french.
It should default to english for guests when their computer language is not french.

Once regestired, you can set your preferred language in your user profile.

Anyway, you may ask your question in both french and english - most of us speak english too over there :)

If you did update your TI-Nspire HW-E to 3.6, then your Boot2 was also updated to 3.2.4.

To freely read PDF you need Ndless which requires OS 3.1
But OS 3.6 forbids you to install OS 3.1.
Thus you need Nlaunch, which makes Boot2 ignore the minimal installable OS version set in memory.
But Nlaunch only works with Boot2 3.1.

You then need to reflash Boot2 3.1.
This requires an external hardware: an USB/TTL interface:

By putting the TI-Nspire in Boot2 receive mode (Doc+Enter+2 while rebooting) and connecting ground, Tx and Rx to three contacts on the TI-Nspire bottom J01/Dock connector, you can reflash Boot2 3.1 with the Hyperterminal software coming with Windows up to Vista.

After this is done you can litterally do everything you want with your calculator, and we have comprehensive tutorials in both french and english for each step :)

TI-Nspire / Re: nPDF

- doesn't seem to correctly set up the '.pdf' extension when the Ndless config file is missing
how do you do this ? there is a new Ndless instruction for setting up new extensions, where you don't even need to check/parse the config file content by yourself anymore

I made a function for that, but forgot to call it XD
EDIT: The function uses cfg_register_fileext to register the .pdf, .xps, and .cbz extensions.

Ok thanks.
Then it will be for the next update ;)

Great program, the biggest TI-Nspire Ndless program ever! :D

Some notes which are going to be useful for a next release, I hope:

- seems to crash when trying to open a non-supported file
you could test the file header and display an error - and maybe avoid showing those files

- doesn't seem to correctly set up the '.pdf' extension when the Ndless config file is missing
how do you do this ? there is a new Ndless instruction for setting up new extensions, where you don't even need to check/parse the config file content by yourself anymore

So the popup doesn't prevent you from installing Nlaunch, does it ?

What's saying that ? The calculator or the computer ?

Does it force you to update ?

@hking1
I've just tried installing Nlaunch on a TI-Nspire CX CAS using the new TI-Nspire Computer Link 3.6 and it did perfectly work on the first try, from the first step to the last step.

Could you elaborate, please ?

Ah, this is interesting ;)
So TI did hide another little surprise for us in it - how cute :P

What does it reject ?  the last nlaunch.tcc/tco/tnc/tno file ?
Because it then should be the same problem with Ndless.

Can't you just uninstall TI-Nspire Computer Link 3.6 and reinstall TI-Nspire Computer Link 3.2 ?

Given what we've been enduring last months, what you're describing is perfectly possible.

News / New TI-Nspire Computer Link 3.6
« on: December 06, 2013, 10:00:58 am »
With the discovery of the TI-Nspire 3.6 softwares in a previous news, we noticed that there were some connectivity changes.

We are therefore not suprised to discover today a new 3.6 version of the TI-Nspire Computer Link ! ;D
Compared with TI-Nspire softwares, the TI-Nspire Computer Link has the advantage not to include any emulation or simulation of the calculator, which allows it to start much faster, which makes transfers much more intuitive (no need to look for such things in an obscure hidden part of the interface) and which requires no license number.

Apparently , version 3.6 looks identical to the previous version 3.2.

Following our previous experiences, it seems that the installation is only necessary if you need to transfer data with a wireless TI-Nspire running OS 3.6.
But if you install it, you lose the possibility of transferring data with wireless TI-Nspire running earlier OSes 3.1 and 3.2.
To our knowledge it is now impossible to keep wireless connectivity with all TI-Nspire OSes from the same software anymore.  :banghead:

As far as we know, the choice to install it or not has no consequence on wired USB connectivity. You can go on using any OS in that case.

@DJ Omnimaga: Apparently, no problem with wired connectivity.
It's only for wireless connectivity that if you use 3.6, it has to be on both sides: OS and software.

News / TI-Nspire softwares 3.6 found on TI server too
« on: December 05, 2013, 09:39:55 pm »
Just like the TI-Nspire OS 3.6 had been found on the Texas Instruments website seven weeks ago, the TI-Nspire softwares 3.6 have just been discovered and this suggests that we are getting closer and closer to the official release of version 3.6 ! :D

Their version number is 3.6.0.546 , exactly the same as the OS version. So it seems that the found OS was really the one intended for the release and we do not know the reason for this period of 7 weeks.

If you have already specified license number to use the TI-Nspire software on your computer, it will automatically be recovered during the update. If you were in the evaluation period, it is not reset and will go on unaltered.

]Note that you can combine several evaluation periods without a license on one computer for up to 300 days (10 months), by sucessively installing and using different editions of the TI-Nspire software. But this means you musn't not install/launch the new edition before the former edition evaluation period has expired:
  • TI-Nspire CAS Teacher Software (90 days)
  • TI-Nspire CAS Student Software (30 days)
  • TI- Nspire CAS Teacher Software Navigator (30 days)
  • TI-Nspire Teacher Software (90 days)
  • TI-Nspire Student Software (30 days)
  • TI-Nspire Navigator Teacher Software (30 days)
Beware, it has not been well explored so far, but if you update your software to version 3.6, it is possible that some documents you are going to create with it in the future will no longer be usable with the the old 3.1 and 3.2 OSes.

In a previous news, we noticed that TI-Nspire units running OS 3.6 were unable to connect to a TI-Navigator wireless network managed by the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.2 software.
We assumed that it was either a bug in the OS, or that there had been some changes in the witeless protocol with version 3.6.

The changes have now been officially confirmed by TI. If you use a TI-Navigator wireless network, they advise you to update the calculators with OS 3.6 before updating the TI-Nspire Navigator software to version 3.6.

If you don't comply with this, wireless connectivity will be permanently lost and calculators will all have to be connected one after the other in USB in order to be updated to 3.6 and to get back the wireless connectivity. The TI-Nspire Navigator 3.6 is also prompting you for this on its first launch:

The TI-Nspire Navigator 3.6 software also comes with a new firmware 3.6.0.19 for the TI-Nspire Navigator access Point and makes you install it on its first launch. Fortunately, in practice this does not appear to affect the ability of the access point to communicate with TI-Nspire handhelds running OSes 3.1 and 3.2 with the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.2 software.

Let's sum up the problem :
  • TI-Nspire calculators running OSes 3.1 or 3.2 can not communicate properly with the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.6 software
  • TI-Nspire calculators running OS 3.6 can not communicate properly with the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.2 software
In both cases, the wireless network status on the handheld gets stuck in the following state:

For schools using a set of calculators belonging to them, it's just a simple matter of choice.

For the teacher who accepts on his TI-Nspire Navigator wireless network the personal calculators of his students, this change is extremely problematic. In fact:
  • if he's using the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.2 software, he will have to forbit his students to install OS 3.6 on their own calculators
  • if he's using the TI-Nspire Navigator 3.6 software, he will have to force his students to install OS 3.6 on their own calculators...
In the absence of apparent new features or a noticeable hacking interest for such networks, we may wonder about the reasons for a sudden change in the wireless network protocol, and if it is not rather a pretext to force massive updates to OS 3.6.

I wasn't even blaming Compu in the 1st post, as two PTT Ndless tools were released on Omnimaga by two different authors and both of them were removed.
I don't even know which one is his own tool.

I'd like to apologize to Compu if I did hurt him.

Let's stay with the facts and informations:

- two PTT Ndless tools were released on Omnimaga

- both of them were removed from Omnimaga, but the authors could properly argue about this and present their points of view in their respective topics

- somebody did put back one of those tools on Github with a description which, to me, seems agressive towards TI and towards the members of the community who were against such tools (like me) in both topics

- TI is mentionning this for forbidding users of the new OS 3.6 to downgrade to any previous OS

Because of some misunderstanding, the 1st post was implying that one of both authors did reupload this himself.
I've now fixed the post.

If you don't agree with the latest fact, you should blame TI - not me.

Double post to add some information, because apparently, someone was fast enoush to down-vote before I could even edit my post with some piece of evidence.

Huh? Who put PTTKiller/PTTCopier on GitHub

You seemed to know about it:
Well, PTTcopier is still available and findable with a simple google search.

Edit: ok, explanation on the chat with Compu.
He did mention a Youtube result with Google.
He doesn't know who did put the tool on Github with such a description

According to what TI has written, the person who was stupid enough to release PTTkiller publicly after it had been moderated here is clearly responsible for this.

Edit:
But I just brought in some information. Feel free to suggest that TI is lying, but if we take the text as is, I just made the logic conclusion about the reason of all our problems.

I didn't want to imply that the author did the upload himself.

Finally some official infos about OS 3.6. Looks like the release will be soon.
http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=13521&p=153446#p153446

Note especially about this:

It's confirmed that you won't be able to downgrade from 3.6 ever again (officially), because of fixes related to the press-to-test mode.
So it looks like they're referring to some Ndless tool, attacking the PTT mode, which was released here on Omnimaga.
Unfortunately, even after being moderated and explained things here, someone didn't think this back and did rerelease the tool on github.

So to the one who will feel concerned by this, thank you very much for all the problems we now have to deal with...

If Ndless 3.2/3.6 is released someday (and note I said *if*), I hope that nobody will attack the PTT ever again.
