This hack is still in progress, but its in pretty much in between alfa and beta form.. but anywho, here it is.. oh, and I made this hack to be as hard as possible, so if you beat it then let me know, because I sure havn't even with save states! (because I always get the load/save state mixed up no matter how i re-map my keys lol)
download here (http://www.4shared.com/file/245646863/eb93144e/Snake_Xs_hack_beta.html)
-
Thanks for fixing the link, Eeems. What kinda rom hack is this though? I'm a little lost on that part...
-
Fixed the link
-
fixed the link? what? was it broken?
edit: This is just one of those hacks that are ment to flat out kill you. It is possible to complete, as I have gone through each section of it, you just need save states, and tools or extremely god-like skill.
-
yeah it was broken but it's fixed now.
-
What do you use to run it?
-
oh, yeah I forgot to mention what you need. I just assumed people knew how to open .ips files
ok, first of all, you will need an unmodified super mario world rom. get it here:
www.google.com (its illegal to distribute roms so just use google if you need to download it because I am not gonna get in trouble)
then you need a program called lunar ips. Get it here: http://www.4shared.com/file/245725257/9ced8fa9/lips101.html
then just select 'appy ips patch', select the ips file, then when you are selecting the file to patch, select your unmodified clean rom, then you have the hacked rom! XD
-
What program do you need to run the rom at that point? Thanks by the way.
Found a program...just need to figure out the controls...
-
Glad to see a SMW hacker around ^^. I know Genolo and TsukasaZX/SubaruZX does too, altough they rarely post here. I'm gonna give this a try as soon as I get some time :)
I did SMW stuff before but never really finished an entire lv x.x
-
Yes, and I am about to become advanced SMW hacker as I learn Snes ASM.. Hopefully ill understand the language.. that way, my rom will be as sophisticated as VIP4! :o
-
That would be cool ^^. Btw a nice site for SMW hacking is smwcentral.net . Keep in mind that some people there are not always too courteous to new members asking questions and even with high-end ROM hacks, your work might still get bashed, because the bar was risen pretty high there. However, if you get bashed there it doesn't necessarly mean your ROM hack is bad, though. At other communities, like here, we will tolerate the usage of the original game graphics and music, for example. But again we are not centered toward ROM hacking really (altough it went pretty close in October)
-
oh yeah, ive been a member there. The people from what I have posted in the past are nice so far :)
-
hmm i have yet to try this although i stink really bad at plattformers so ill probally not get very far
/me loads syoban?? to brush up on his skills
-
oh yeah, ive been a member there. The people from what I have posted in the past are nice so far :)
that seems good then, just make sure to read their submission rules, though, because I know myself they are very nitpicky and strict on what is allowed and what's not (sometimes I wish ticalc.org was a bit this way too, altough not as much). I saw very good hacks getting rejected because Mario died at the end for example, or in the intro sequence.
Suggestion for your hack so far: make it compatible with Super Mario All Stars & World too, not just SMW, since sometimes the former is easier to find online and most SMW patches works on both.
Ok I give up lol, that part with the turtle shell is just too hard to sync with x.x
Also btw are graphics supposed to be garbled?
-
oh, you see.. its complicated to explain why they are garbled. you see, I have actually inserted custom graphics into the level, and it kinda made the normal graphics garbled, im gonna work on that.. don't worry.
-
Oooh ok I see, I assume you just need to switch to the new custom graphic set in Lunar Magic then you're set?
-
pretty much, all I need to fix now is the background.
edit: I got it all fixed.
-
cool! same download link as first post or are you in the process of uploading new link?
-
erm.. no, i just gave up using different Graphics because it was too much of a hassle for me to deal with. I am better just deleting the garbled ones and keeping the ones that I inserted. No changes have been made since my beta upload.
-
oooh ok I see x.x
-
yeah, right now, im just in a stage where i need some ideas. got any that are torturous? :D
-
Hm that level is hard as hell...
BTW ZSNES supports opening of .ips files if you put it in the same folder and rename it as the .smc file.
Ex.: Super Mario World.smc and Super Mario World.ips in your roms folder, then open the .smc in ZSNES.
-
Nice to know, thanks for the tip juju
That said, I should really update my ZSNES copy. I still use one from 2004 or 2007 I think x.x
-
well, at least I know its hard now.. as intended :D
-
Yeah, I didn't figured out how to get past the beginning yet... It's really hard.
-
well thanks for your input on that juju2143, im glad its dificulty level for you is meating the standards expected.. I am working on a newer version.
-
I think this is near impossible without using tool-assisted means XD (slow downs and save states)
-
Ya, I haven't played in a couple days...but I couldn't get past that first part with the red shell.
-
hehe, looks like people are stuck with the red shell part. I am definitly not gonna remove it either XD
-
Well you should maybe hint on how to pass it ;)
-
my guess is that you have to be in sync with it, like running right in front of it at max speed, then when jumping, slow down a bit, but then you may hit the blocks at the top with your head. Another idea would be to jump on the first block the shell hits then quickly jump on the shell, then on the serie of block where's the Koopa, but good luck doing that x.x
Otherwise maybe there's a hidden block somewhere in the hole... I guess I could always cheat by checking lunar magic :P *hides*
-
I just figured you had to time it just right and jump and hit it while it is in the air after the ramp.
-
This is why I wonder if it's even possible to do without tools x.x. I swear if someone tried to TAS this level, he would have to spend at least weeks on his run and it would involve hundreds of re-recordings x.x
-
TAS?
-
tool-assisted speedrun
-
Ahhh. Ok. (There are too many acronyms in this world :P)
-
yeah true I easily get lost with them x.x we hear new ones every day x.x
4chan makes it much worse x.x
-
Good job! you finally managed to get past the red shell... now good luck getting the rest ;D
-
wait who did? :O
-
errmm.. yeah, i ment figure out how to get past the red shell. Good luck with the rest of the level.. you'll need it.
-
Oh, I never did get past the first shell, either you might have misread my post or I totally failed at typing it x.x
-
Wait, who was right on the method? DJ and I post posted ones.
-
my guess is that you have to be in sync with it, like running right in front of it at max speed, then when jumping, slow down a bit, but then you may hit the blocks at the top with your head.
:P
-
yeah I guess this might be the only way. Getting our timing right is so hard, tho o.o
-
Dang, I was hoping I was right :P But good to know ;)
Ya, timing in 2D games is so hard sometimes.
-
here is how you can do it most of the time:
and also, thats how I do it as well, its the best method imo.
-
Thanks for this, It might help me get the timing right ^^
-
sure, no problem. just lemme know when you did get it beat though :)
-
ok, well major progress will need to be done on my hack because I just now realized how much potential I can put into this. I am now putting it in alpha stage.
-
Ok ^^
I can't wait to see what kind of challenges you're reserving all of us :D
-
oh.. now that I have learned asm.... I just opened a whole new potential for harder things that are available already. This means I can create my own enemies! :D
updated beta:
http://www.4shared.com/file/ZMeZx7dY/_2__Snake_Xs_hack_beta.html
-
Awesome, gonna download now ^^
Try another site, though, because 4shared is annoyign with the seconds delay x.x, I kinda prefer Mediafire
EDIT: Ok your hack crashes when level starts. I hear a remix of the first part of Secret Of Mana 3rd world map theme (where the sky is red with lightnings) but it black screens
-
wait what? how?? what does it look like? does it load?
-
Nah black screen, just music. Link to new patch?
EDIT: Nvm, I got another ROM from somewhere else and now it works.
I like the music. Music also seem to play longer now.
-
ok, here is another beta release that has some asm in it. :D
http://www.mediafire.com/?iymknfyb3y2
-
Oooh nice but since it is too hard for me I'll prbly cheat a bit to get to see the ASM blocks if they're past the koopa shell part x.x
Even with your tutorial I still can't time it right :(
-
I have a new beta released. Have a look at the new background design... :D
http://bin.smwcentral.net/16345/MARIO.ips
-
Ok thanks gonna download it now (and some game genie code *runs* :P)
EDIT: Ok snake your patch is broken. I know, because I used the exact same rom as last time, which is clean, unpatched (it's the one you linked me to). I even tried it before to make sure. I applied your patch to it and when I run it, the intro screen (Nintendo Presents) is garbled then black screen
EDIT: Ok it works now, played it so far, finally didnt need the cheats tho since you added some items at the beginning ^^
I like it in general and awesome background+music. However, I noticed a small bug: see attachment. The tile below me is solid.
EDIT: 3: Also in the vid attached below was this supposed to happen?
-
yea that was supposed to happen. that is my new supprise! :D lol definitely not a bug
wait.. ohh.. the tile, yeah thats a bug
-
Aaah ok ^^
-
yeah, im about to scrap that level and re-design it. It will be a lot more fun and challenging and not so hard.
-
Aaah ok, you could keep it similar, though. As for now it isn't that hard except you need to make sure to not lose your cape :P
-
no, sorry.. It is going to be a completely different design and oriented toward something else. I have already begun the process, so here is a peak at the new level. http://i44.tinypic.com/vyl63m.png
-
oooh I see ^^ will this one have some special backgrounds and other custom tiles too?
-
you bet!!! I even had to go so deep into it as to use a hex editor for some special stuffs. Anyways, new beta!!! W00T
http://www.mediafire.com/?otf2ijej4nn
-
ouch x.x
I wish I could understand such stuff x.x
Oh well, at least I am happy some people can do
Glad to see an update, I will download asap. I hope I can get this one to run x.x
-
actually, use this beta instead, that one had issues
http://www.mediafire.com/?55yjlzmhzgh
-
Lol I downloaded the other one and for some reasons it wasn't even on my computer anywhere x.x
Gonna download this one now, I got a new ROM that I hope it will work.
-
ok then. Have fun then =p
-
Ok I am stuck. How am I supposed to get through that huge pit that just have coins? I can't find a P switch anywhere. Also some of the graphics are glitched up
-
spinjumping ftw! :D
-
Like DJ said, the graphics are majorly glitched so you might want to fix that unless it's some sort of per-person glitch. Then I dunno. A lunarIPS issue?
Anywho, getting across the chasm is impossible to my knowledge. The ... I believe... 4th and 5th coins... are 1 space too far apart to jump between.
-
I figured it out. I did not patch that with a clean rom. Thanks though for telling
edit: Grrrrrreat news! The level is FINALLY complete with some nice additives.. I said the first level, not the whole rom.
I will not give you the ips file linked in here, as I have put out a tool-assisted run on youtube demonstrating the new level, and I put the IPS in the description. Have fun!
(video is still processing. I will edit when it is done processing)
-
Nice, and I loved the barrel part. Nice addition, I didn't expect that one. Also at the end, if Mario jump too far on the ending, can he die when jumping in the hole?
The difficulty seems pretty nice now, too.
You may need to fix the timer, though.
-
Nice graphics :)
Maybe I'm just failing epically, but I think the 5th and 6th coins are too far apart to jump between.
-
yep your just failing epically. I have done this in 1 shot, you just need all the momentum you can get.
-
Let's try to remain respectful, though. Some people have skills at different place than others. I myself had an hard time getting pass the coins x.x
-
I'll be honest, here. What's the point of a SMW ROM hack that's practically impossible for people who aren't absolutely skilled or use TAS tools? Furthermore, don't we already have enough hacks like that? (Kaizo Mario, Kusotare Mario, Mario's Masochistic Mission, etc)
I'm not trying to bash you or your hack. I'm just kind of sad honestly. I like SMW ROM hacks but it just.... it makes me sad when people choose to go the Kaizo route instead of making a beautiful and amazing hack like The Elemental Star.
But eh, that's just me. I can just either not play it or go insane trying to :P
-
Ok.. let me tell you something about Kaizo hacks. I was trying to be original with my own idea and I barely even know who/what kaizo even is. If I barely know that kaizo is a what and not a who, there is no way I can be able to copy the difficulty on the level. I also thought that the level wouldn't be that hard in difficulty, but I guess I should make it a little bit easier.
-
You are being original with your ideas. I mean, spin-jumping across coins is something I've never even heard of or seen before. That's definitely original as far as I can tell.
I wasn't trying to imply you were trying to copy Kaizo or Kusotare. I was trying to get at that it seemed like you were going for a game that's purposefully too hard for the average joe (which I consider myself to be an accurate representative of in terms of playing ROM hacks).
yep your just failing epically. I have done this in 1 shot, you just need all the momentum you can get.
This quote is what mislead me to believe this. I mean, to me, it sounded like you were saying "well, it's your fault you suck too much to beat this ROM hack and I'm not gonna do anything to make it better" which is, in my opinion, a very Kaizo way of thinking when making a ROM hack.
Now that you said you weren't intending to do that, I'd like to apologize for my previous post and for being a jerk about it.
-
To be fair, I think this hack is still far from being Kaizo style. I think it is fine if someone wants to make an hard hack. As TsukasaZX said there are many that are already available, but your hack difficulty is far less extreme than what I've seen on Youtube. In fact, if you take the SMB1 hack Super Mario Forever/Frustration, I think it won't even match some SMW hacks I saw on Youtube. At least, Snake X hack and the SMB frustration one won't require frame-by-frame advance TASing to beat them. I could get through the coins in 20% speed. Sure it's still TAS'ed, but not to the extents of what you see on http://www.tasvideos.org. I even could get through a bunch of the coins without TAS'ing, once. It's just very very hard, but relatively doable if you're extremly good.
Hacks for everyone, that is. Some beautiful hacks that are medium difficulty, some easy ones, some hacks using the default chipsets, some hard ones and some hacks designed specifically to be TAS'ed.
I think the current level difficulty should remain when it comes to the coins, except maybe have an easier level as stage 1?
Anyway due to Omnimaga standards, I had to rate down your first post (like I did with Snake_X earlier post) and rate up the second one (@TsukasaZX), since the tone of the first one seemed a bit rude to me, but then you apologised in the second one. We have to remember to not try to discourage project authors from working on their games and that some project authors may have different goals in mind. It's like me with my F-Zero hack that has no track in one of the course: this course was meant to be extremly hard and require a speed code so you can try to fly through the entire race with barely seeing the guides. It is possible without TAS'ing but it takes several tries. It can be hard to TAS anyway because the only N64 emu that has real TAS support lacks any Gameshark/Action-Replay support
-
alllrighty, well I am pretty much in the final stages and you should expect a final realease sometime this week! ;D
-
That is totally awesome :) You have been doing a really great job with this, and i cant wait for the final release!
-
Hmm...I wonder if I will be good enough to play it...I'm not so good at smw. Much better at hedgewars and Worms
If what's posted is true, it sounds great! not super hard like some, but not super easy either!
-
Nice to hear, can't wait for new version!
-
oh yeah, it's going to be a challenge.
(mostly for me because I have to play it 50 times to get all the errors.)
-
yeah x.x that's one hard part of testing x.x
You could maybe TAS it but then you won't see if it's doable without TAS'ing lol. One trick you could do is maybe play it at 25% or 30% speed so it's not like real tool-assisting, but still gives you an idea of how hard it would be for someone who has good reflexes
-
For me, slowing them down is actually harder than doing it normally. Also, I don't think you can expect a release this week.. I am finding an awful lot of things that have just added up every time I go through the beta, but who knows...
-
Do you mean bugs and glitches? I hope not x.x
-
yeah, bugs and glitches that need to be solved. I am (SOOOOOOOOOOO) close to being done though.
-
glad to hear ^^
-
HERE IT ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! THE FINAL RELEASE! (well, its probably going to be updated at some point... no, it will be updated at some point)
http://bin.smwcentral.net/17589/MARIO.ips
-
Ok tried it and I like the new song in the first level part. However i gave up at the fish part because i kept getting pushed backwards and couldnt move forward x.x
-
lol, the controls are reversed at the top XD
-
yeah x.x
I guess it adds challenge though and prevents the player from flying through the entire level :P
-
have yet to try this think imma gonna make my bro play it though with out tasing tools :P
just to see him get mad and it looks good so i cant wait to play it my self
^_^
-
Lol bad Geekboy, how can you make somebody suffer so much? D:
-
Guess what! I am currently in the production of yet another rom hack. This time, the difficulty is aimed at everyone meaning its not going to be a hard hack! The first level is already done, but that's all so far.
-
Woo! That means I can play it without failing miserably on the first level! :D
Well, really, the only thing that was truly difficult in the first hack was the level where when you jumped up too high, your controls reversed. I mean, the only real problem with that is given gravity, Mario remains in that altitude for but a second on average, so it's not really easy to keep swapping directions while managing to avoid Cheep-Cheeps and land on the platform. Once you get the rhythm down, though, it's more tedious than hard.
Also, I can't wait to see this second hack. I will totally LP it if it's awesomesauce enough (and I am expecting it to be).
On a related but different note, I need to upload youtube videos of me playing my own first ROM hack and another ROM hack done for fun. And no, I will not hijack your thread with embeds.... or will I?
Muahahahaahah! >:D
j/k
-
yeah, haha. I won't include really evil stuff like I did in my first hack. I will recycle some of the custom blocks from it, but don't worry, I won't use it in an evil way. It will be fun.
-
Nice to hear you're working on a new hack. I think you should integrate some optional levels (or alternate level endings) that are super hard, though, so the rom can be played by both the average user and people who seek for challenge
-
I need to try these hacks, Snake. They sound really cool, though I've never one before. Good luck on the new one! ;D
-
well, I would do that... but I can't. Sorry DJ_Omimaga. For those who want a challenge, vip4 is out there lol. Anyways, Done with the first level. Hurayy for good progress (actually ive been kinda lazy recently on this since I bought bejeweled blitz)
-
aaah it's ok
Glad to see new progress still ^^, hoping you don't give up
-
no don't worry, I definitely won't give up on this one.
edit: Well, I got permission recently from the vippers saying I can use their version of Romancing SaGa III - Last battle in my hack.
-
yay! I love that song
-
Well, I am re-designing my first level. When I created it, I intended it to be easy, but it turned into yoshi's house easy - as in barely any difficulty if any. Now, its going to have some quality put into it.
-
Aaah ok, keep up the good work :)
-
sorry.. but sadly to say - project canceled.
reasoning: I simply lost interest.
-
:( sorry to hear :/
Will you be working on any other hack anytime soon, tho? :/
-
yep, as soon as im interested again - probably a year or 2, but most likely in the coming months.. maybe
-
I hope it's the later D:
Are you still gonna check the forums every now and then?
-
OMnomnomnom over 1 year later.. I now journey into my SMW account, dig up old stuff and RESUME working on my for everyone hack. Haha you thought this would never come :p
edit:
yep, as soon as im interested again - probably a year or 2, but most likely in the coming months.. maybe
:o i was right
edit edit: well.. I went through my files at smw, i found a bin file (graphics), my coin graphics, and a rar/zip of other gfx... so ill look into those as well
-
ehh soz for double posting, but I'm pretty sure the first level is done. Here it is!
http://bin.smwcentral.net/44683/mario.ips
note: the overworld is completely untouched, but this is in the VERY early stages.. only the first level is complete.
-
Could you post a screenshot or video of the early parts of level 1? Is it still on the Kaizo side btw? UNfortunately I don't have time to patch the ROM and try it. D: (as you could see, my reply was extremly late too x.x)
-
sure. Yeah its DEFINITELY not kaizo or any of the like. I tried to make it as friendly as possible.
edit: uploading..
edit edit: ill have to do it some other time actually, 11 pm here atm
-
Looks good!
I hope to see more work from you soon!
