Resources for how to hack ROMs
« on: March 29, 2010, 10:16:41 am »
Just made a quick search... Just appetizers to what is possible with ROM hacking.

To know what rom hacking is and general idea of what is possible see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROM_hacking

Other sites related:
http://www.romhacking.net/
http://romhack.wikia.com/

Tools:
(emulators)
(hex editor)
(ips patcher)
(compilers/assemblers)

What other sites and resources you use? I am curious because the other day I have hex edited the memory of a RPG to win the best objects and stuff. Even changed the splash screens accidentally.

Have fun!

I like romhacking.net a lot. Lot of great utilities. I don't really follow the ROM hacking scene as much, though, so I don't know many sites

Another great one is http://www.smwcentral.net , but it's mostly for SMW hacking.

Also, I may point out that one of the most essential tool in the world of ROM hacking is an IPS patcher, to distribute your ROM hacks. Because it's against the rules to distribute a full ROM, you must use a IPS patcher like Lunar IPS to create a patch containing just the modified data. This same patcher can be used for applying patches to ROMs. There are some alternatives, too.

And as always, BACKUP! Very important when developping softwares. With ROM hacking you could mess up and permanently break your ROM
In case you are wondering where I went, I left Omni back in 2015 to form CodeWalrus due to various reasons explained back then, but I stopped calc dev in 2016 and am now mostly active on the CW Discord server at https://discord.gg/cuZcfcF

I personally love lunar magic. It's only for SMW (make sure you don't get All-Stars!) But it's extremely powerful and can generate roms or IPSs. It's also got a really nice gui.

I thought Lunar Magic could also do SMW+AS? I rememeber reading on their site you could either use a Super Mario All Stars+World or Super Mario World ROM.

And yeah I agree it can be easy to use when you aren't too serious about ROM hacking (not replacing the graphics/music, for example). Some other stuff is harder but at least it's supposedly much easier than doing it with hex editors.
