Title: S.A.D.--The Tosonian War (For the Axe Parser Contest)
Post by: Hot_Dog on June 03, 2010, 08:15:22 pm
I decided to reveal my project for the Axe programming contest.  It will be a 2D ship shooting game that takes place around 280 AL to 300 AL.  It will contain no spoilers to the RTS version of S.A.D., but it will offer some story insight that the RTS S.A.D. manual won't include

OOOH nice, I'm glad to see some derivatives from the original strategy game. It will eventually make the S.A.D story and serie more popular among TI coders (providing you finish all games). :)

Will it be like Fire Track 2 or more like Phantoom Star?

Interesting, I wonder what style of shooter you will choose, as their are many different varieties. I'm also curious as to how many people will choose to disclose their projects as this contest continues.

More like Fire Track 2.  Although I didn't play either game.  Basically, you can move your ship anywhere in the level, although the level does have a start and a finish.  If you played the 2002 game Star Wars: Clone Wars, that's where I got the inspiration from, if that helps you to imagine what the gameplay will be like.

Here's the splash screen.   A Starcraft wanna-be, but by pure coincidence.  Incidentally, from left to right are the three factions: Human, Ptaloid, and Tosonian.

I realized today just how much dialog the game's story line requires, so I'm going to put dialogues, such as mission briefings, inside a special program on the computer.  The player runs the program to view these messsages (more on that in the future).  At the end of every mission will be a password to unlock the next set of dialogs, so that players won't be tempted to "look ahead" and spoil the ending for themselves.

wow nice title screen and I like the dialog/mission briefing idea. In your game will you be able to play as any of the races?

Glad you like the dialog/mission briefing idea.  It will certainly allow me to tell the story in-depth.

And YES!!  You will be able to play as any of the races.  There will be three campaigns, with somewhere around eight missions each.  Most of the time the races share similar units (and you'll find out why in the manual that comes with the game), but there will be some ships unique to each race.

Great to hear :D

Make sure in this game each races got their advantage/disadvantages too, to add some challenges and changes between all campaings :)

That's not a bad idea, but will my entry in the contest be disqualified or graded off if I add suggestions from people into the game?

I guess a few suggestions would be fine, altough with too many it could actually affect the score (unless you adapted the suggestions for other stuff). No disqualifications, though :P

Here's the first map.  Hopefully it won't take long to have the tilemap code, but I need to make adjustments to make it 16 x 16 tilemap code.  I'm using 16 x 16 to allow bigger maps in a smaller amount of memory, although the ships will be eight by eight sprites.

Looks nice! This map looks dynamic enough that it could be used in an RPG just as easily. =)

Maybe so.  8)  If I ever had time to do an RPG, it would be one about the story found in "Of Mankind, the Ptaloids, and the Tosonians.  http://ourl.ca/4100/77593  The reason I chose not to do that for the Axe Parser contest is the game would require 100 levels

wow that's a lot. It would probably not fit in the RAM x.x, and since the contest disallows using ASM/BASIC code, you wouldn't be able to use the archive like you want either. (I think Axe has an archive/unarchive command that can solve this, though, but that would cause a lot of defragmenting/garbage collecting)

Wow, this sounds pretty cool!  I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

I have some good news and some bad news.  I'll make the bad news short and simple: The game is on hold, though maybe not indefinitely.  It will not be ready in time for the Axe Parser contest.

The good news is, I am at the point in Seek and Destroy where I don't have to have hours to sit down and code.  Thus, my work on it will continue normally throughout the summer.

I'm sorry to hear :(

What would be the reason why the game is on hold? Is it due to SAD main game progress resuming?

Glad to see SAD progressing again, though. I hope you finish both of those eventually :)

Sort of...actually, SAD is resuming because the other is on hold.  I got a job this summer, and so that will take up a lot of my time.

HA! looks really cool (NOTICE: this is a reaction on the Eye candy map you posted earlier I can't get my comment to appear below that...) but maybe you should make tiles that are rounded of so you get a smoother map. especially the "random" looking tile could use some smoothing on the edges! that makes the map not only less repetitive but just overally looking better (according to me...)!

Tip: since you seem used to "threaded" forum displays (1990's messageboard style) Omnimaga has no threaded display option, if you want to reply to a post in particular (or parts of it), you need to use the Quote button besides each posts.
