Title: 'Most Online Today: 1154' -> wat?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 07, 2011, 08:48:06 pm
O.O

I am wondering what caused that suddent influx in guests earlier today? I thought we made it to a popular site or something, but this evening the total seems pretty normal, so that must not have lasted long, meaning it's pretty much impossible that we got featured on a site in particular, since even right now we would still have a lot of users online (unless some of those sites post news so incredibly fast that it remains on front page for only about 30 minutes?).

This happened in Early May too, a few days before we got slashdotted. In fact, when we got slashdotted we had fewer people on (except the Casio Prizm). Sometimes, I know bot and crawlers can do that, but usually with 200 guests online, not over 800, let alone 1100... ???

Anybody have an idea of what could've happened there? ???

I remember how the Pi is Wrong thread has something like 15 guests viewing it yesterday...but idk really :P

Is there a way to log which topics are the most viewed?

Unfortunately nope. I could get an admin to check error logs, but I think it only keeps the last few requests.

Judging from  http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=who , there's no rhyme or reason to all of the guests here.  I think it's an influx of bots. :-\

I guess earlier it could be a bot using a proxy that changes IP every hit. However if you notice a topic got a suddent increase in views it could be that too.

Nah I doubt it. Ticalc gets more traffic than here, but not enough to cause such traffic on Omni.
