Title: (Poll) Can anyone access this URL?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on August 01, 2013, 03:19:21 pm
Could you check (and vote) if you can access the following URLs and tell me the error you get if you can't?

http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/omnistats.png
http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/omni2002.gif
http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/easter/
Index.html is supposed to be a scary pop-up (for now). I didn't link directly for that reason.

I am curious, because since xlib.mtv-music-generator.com (which includes several Omnimaga news screenshots) has moved to Sorunome's hosting, I received numerous reports of 404 Not Found errors from various people whenever they tried to access those links, even though I and a few others could access them fine at the same moment. I am thinking this is a DNS misconfiguration, but the problem is either on Sorunome or Juju's end so maybe they should check again so everyone can access the images again. This error has lasted for over a month, so it's not a DNS propagation issue (since that never takes more than 72 hours).

NOTE: The sub-domain is unavailable via the dutch Anonymouse proxy. It gives the following error:

Quote
ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

The following error was encountered while trying to retrieve the URL: http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com

Unable to determine IP address from host name "xlib.mtv-music-generator.com"

The DNS server returned:
Server Failure: The name server was unable to process this query.

This means that the cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. Check if the address is correct.

Can't connect to the server.
Title: Re: (Poll) Can anyone access this URL?

It works fine for me. The 3rd link is a 403 though, which means directory listing is disabled and there's no index.

I've had lots of problems with DNS like this in the past, not every DNS server would pick it up successfully but others would, and I'm still unsure of why it happens. I should move them to Cloudflare.

No problems.
http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/easter/ is 403 Forbidden, but probably intentional (right?)

I get a server not found error on all 3 urls most of the times but rarely loads to a yellow background with a rectangle in the top.

For me, all sub-directories are 403 (I think it's intentional). The main URL works fine, though. It's a spinning baneling (Starcraft 2) with the Do a barrel roll song playing in the background. Images works fine too.

From the common proxy mentionned above, every URL gives the error I mentionned above. Google Translate proxy works fine, though. So for me, I can access the sub-domain from only 2 IPs out of 3.

Juju, do you think changing the nameservers to Freedns.afraid.org ones or something would work? Back when Omni Invisionfree board closed, the Yahoo DNSes I was using would never update again, so I was forced to switch to Afraid ones. It's possible that whatever you use caused the DNS to not completely propagate accross the world, so some people were permanently stuck with the old URL location. It's not per country basis, since both Harold and the Anonymous proxy are from the same country, yet Harold can access the site fine.

wait, isn't the xlib thingy on my server?
well, i get 403 forbidden for the easter one, i'll fix it.
EDIT: there is no index file in the easter one.

Yeah, this problem has occured ever since Juju made the xlib.mtv-music-generator.com domain point to your server. It worked fine when the images were hosted on 1and1 then later 57o9. The alternate URL is http://illusiat.reubenquest.net/xlib.mtv-music-generator.com_imagesThatWereOn57o9WhereJujuShouldPointTheXlibMTVMGSubdomainToBeforeWeLoseTheGame/

Also I don't mind the 403 on the sub-folders, although one day I would like the main directory to be listable (assuming you don't mind the extra bandwidth usage from Google).

It seems the error Blue_bear_94 gets is similar to the proxy one, meaning it seems to have troubles resolving the domain name.

Wait, i didn't read that it was a DNS issue x.x
That sucks D:
And I don't mind the extra bandwidth, i have 1TB/month and after that it's only been slowed down, i'll never be cut off.

I get a "Server not found" error for all three of those URLs – the same as when I try to access a domain that doesn't exist.

Actually it seems the following URLs

http://www.mtv-music-generator.com/ (redirects to Omni music section)
http://archives.mtv-music-generator.com/ (TIMGUL read-only archive)

now give me this error (from the proxy I get the DNS error):

I get that too, that looks server-side to me. Now are those URLs also pointing to my server (because i didn't set 'em up) XD
Title: Re: (Poll) Can anyone access this URL?

Yeah at first I worried that the domain name expired (due to juju stopping paying for it or something) then pointed to a farm site under construction.

The first two work but the last one gives me 403.

I did something in the DNS I dunno if it works. Please test it out.

Same as most of the others - works, works, 403.

OT but regarding omnistats.png, it's incredibly hard to read on a dark bg :P

you can also use http://www.omnimaga.org/statsgraph.php for stats :P

Yeah, but the point is to check if the DNS works though.

Nope! None is available from Portugal! The server  http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/ is unreachable (DNS problem?) :P

yeah but this needs autoresize implemented like Cemetech's graph (which keeps numbers intact) before we even think about replacing the site stats graph, plus it would be fun if the graph compared monthly stats like mine too :P

IIRC the Omni server needs to support image resizing or something or maybe that can be done in PHP. Basically resize the graph after drawing it then write dates/post number scales afterward.

And yeah so far almost half of the people can't access the domain name

I'll just copy the source of the other stats graph and mod it so that it'll fit my needs :)

Just one thing: The 2012-2013 stats are off by 1 day, starting on April 24th 2012 (or 23rd?). This is because the site was down and suffered some data loss around that time, so no post stats were recorded then. To fix it, you would need to either
1) Manually add the missing stats in Omni DB via the activity logs (just put zeroes for posts, topics, new members, views, like Netham45 did for mid 2008 stats.)
OR
2) Make the graph so that it detects missing dates. Make sure that 0-post days are still counted afterward, tho.

Otherwise, the dates are aligned properly, because the Jan 1st 2007 spike is perfectly aligned with the line. :P

Back on topic, any luck getting the password for 1and1 or is the domain name done?

Um, isn't 1 day like only so few error that it is acceptable? Because this way the script can be easily added to other SMF forums :D

I guess it would be acceptable. I just mean it might cause some minor innacuracies if you ever added more stats below the graph, such as most active day each year, all time high averages, etc. :P

Oh, that's the graph on the Omnimaga stats page for monthly stats that was manually updated. I noticed a few months ago that the image had stopped loading properly. Now I see why.

Sorunome and juju, there is a new problem with the xlib.mtv-music-generator.com domain name or FTP hosting. Now, if I upload something on my illusiat.reubenquest.net webspace, it no longer updates on the server. For example, I uploaded a new Omnistats.png graph, yet at http://xlib.mtv-music-generator.com/omnistats.png it still shows the old one ???

Yet, when I try to access it via the alternate URL, at http://illusiat.reubenquest.net/xlib.mtv-music-generator.com_imagesThatWereOn57o9WhereJujuShouldPointTheXlibMTVMGSubdomainToBeforeWeLoseTheGame/omnistats.png , it shows up fine.

Are you sure you made the domain name point to the right URL?

omnistats.png seems to be working now (didn't last time I posted here). I am also getting the same image in those 2 urls, updated to Aug 2013.

I guess i am telling nginx to cache 30d, lemme change that

EDIT: Does that domain run through CF? Because i disabled my caching, i even put the website offline and it was still up.
the losing game domain would work because it goes directly to my server.

It does run through CloudFlare.

Then disable its caching for images
