Title: 57o9 down since last night
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 21, 2012, 02:39:47 pm
Juju could you fix 57o9 again because it has been down for several hours now and it causes some forum features and images to not function, in addition to many people's webspace.

If it's yet another DoS attack triggered (directly or indirectly) by you-know-who or a script gone wrong by this same person, please ban his/her account once and for all so this stops happening regularly.

banning her account wont help. its not a threat to omni. its just stupidity on the people dosing the server by assuming it's that persons iirc. its just a pain in the ass.

but thats just my two cents/

I'll investigate. Is it related to the fact Omni was down as well this morning?

Not sure. Although we never know.

There we go, I sent a message to my provider. It's beginning to be rather annoying.

Yes, it is. I tried to get on my website today, and I couldn't (again...).

It seems to happen more and more though. I hope they aren't going under like Jatol with Cemetech in 2007 or that it's not someone constantly causing trouble.

So I got in touch with him and concluded the problem was on the datacenter's side, since his server is down as well (which confirmed my thoughts). So he should submit a ticket to said datacenter/ISP, I'll tell ya if we get any news. Their website is still up and some of their servers too though, might be a router problem. Prolly won't be another Jatol, but it's weird how they didn't fixed the problem yet...

Also double post o.o

Yeah I hope it's nothing bad with the datacenter. I heard horror stories about datacenters before, such as errors like this: http://if.invisionfree.com/single/?p=1422615&t=317620

As far as I can tell, at about 6:30 AM MST, Omni's server was DoS'd, yes. I have no idea by who, or what the motives are. The extended downtime is because the networking on my server automatically disabled (or crashed, not sure) until I manually restarted it, which is convenient because I didn't get billed for the bandwidth.

Well a few days ago Helen went on some random IRC channel somewhere and I don't know what triggered it, but she trolled them back after getting trolled, if I remember, and they DoS'ed Juju's server in revenge, as she was using 57o9 to connect on IRC (ZNC shell/bouncer) and it was in the hostmask. As they stalk her/him, they might have found #omnimaga logs via Google search with the nickname in them and then Omnimaga website, and thus, attacked us too. I could be wrong, though. Otherwise it could be from a different group.

Now I won't hear anything until 3AM EST because right now it's like 2AM in Germany and they probably deferred the case to the team that starts working at 9AM. So let's wait and hope for the best.

Hopefully they don't have too many tickets to deal with and they didn't lose everything you have. O.O

Also I hope it's not the same team as the one that lended us an IRC server for a while on DragonFire.

They whacked ours because the guy paying for it didn't pay for it for like 3 months.

I thought it was free for us then they decided to charge us? ???

It was free for us because a guy who was renting a server let us use it, but he stopped paying and didn't have the money to get the data off of it, so if we had wanted to keep the data we would have had to fork up $150.

Oh ok. Kinda sucks we had to pay to get the data because of him, though. X.x

I guess this is why it's best to make backups now X.x

So does that mean that 57o9 is down forever, and all our data on there is gone too?
Title: Re: 57o9 down since last night
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 23, 2012, 09:40:17 am
For the latter, possibly (since no backup were made). However if the datacenter just nullrouted us or something I guess the data is still intact but just no longer available, and with no guarantee we will have access to it once again.

So far it seems more likely that 57o9 and the entire guy's server were taken down due to somebody using the server to test forkbombs or attacking other servers/hosts, and since the person involved was not banned permanently, then Juju or his hosting provider was held responsible.

So... What does that mean? Is that server down for good?

Apparently the server is online, but it's not linked with the domain name for some reason.
I can perfectly get into it using it's IP (188.40.106.223).

Yay, the server's back up! :w00t: Funny, though, a lot of the domains hosted on it (the Axe Wiki, Omnimaga Radio, ClrHome) work, but not 57o9.org, as jimbauwen noted ???

Really? Awesome! :D That was pretty long.

And the 57o9.org domain doesn't work because I messed up with the DNS, I'll change it back.

I'M glad it's back up, but I think the guys who are in charge of maintaining the server took far too long to put it back up considering the other guy you got the VPS from pays money for it.

You might want to look for another VPS provider in the near future, in case, because normally downtimes are solved within the next few hours or so. Or if the downtime was due to the DoS attacks two week ago or testing malicious scripts, then revoke FTP/ZNC/shell access for the people who performed such attack. The next time they might simply take down the server althogether.

When/If I get FTP access, I am definitely backing up everything from my website. That's what I'm concerned about too: people with websites on 57o9 losing data.

Yeah I'M glad everything remained intact. But there were no backups done so I hope there are some done in the future (monthly or bi-monthly at least from juju and more regularly from everyone who got accounts like me or you) in case.

I remember during the Jatol incident Cemetech losts about 3-4 months of posts (about 4000), topics, members and files because they were always reliable before they suddenly vanished off the face of the earth without warning customers. Their reliability prior that made Kerm do backups less often over time. Today I think backups runs on a regular and automated basis.

It's good to have regular backups for websites. Must take a while though (Gigs and Gigs of data).
