Title: A Guide for New Members?
Post by: holmes221b on June 15, 2010, 02:02:49 pm
I was just thinking that a guide for new members might be useful (I know I would, at the very least!).
Like some sort of FAQ, with answers to questions like "How do edit my profile information?", "Why can't I answer PMs?", that sort of thing.

"Why can't I answer PMs?"
Oops, sorry I should have warned you on that.  You need at least 5 posts to send PMs (spam protection),  Sorry.

In MISC->Forum Usage Help, you should have most stuff you need. However, it assumes the board is set to default system settings so it won't warn about PMs. We disabled PMs for people under 5 posts because of spambots. For the profile info, you need one post, because upon registering, all spambots put links to porn websites in their signatures. Our apologies about that.

Also this is something we do not state obviously on the forums in help files or the like, because then spambot creators will find out easier and edit their bot to bypass minimum post limits.

Also the Intro/Randomness forums have post counting disabled, since it can get rather spammish

Our anti bots measures would be a good addition if it wasn't also good for bots makers.
Is there any CAPTCHA during registration?

Maybe we can send a PM to new users saying that any doubt, they can ask in the forums or something like this.

Yeah there is a captcha. For the PM I could maybe install something automatic at one point, but if it's not possible I'm not really gonna PM 100 members a month warning them they need 5 posts to edit their profile :P

Right, use automatic PMs. I forgot to mention explicitly that part.

The introduction could be a easy place for acquiring 1 post at least. But it gets spamish because of peanuts and things like that. :D And sometimes people abuse a little bit the place for posting, too.
There is no simple solution for this. New users just have to go find solutions.

Yeah due to the spam post count was disabled in the intro section (like last Summer).

What about the arcade? Why does it require a minimum of 50 cumulative posts?

trust me, the games are kinda shabby there. most could be written fairly easily in VB. i don't know why it's 50 posts but you aren't missing out on much.

The arcade was set to 50 posts to prevent a flood of members with absolutely no interest towards calcs who sign up on the forums just to play the arcade. I personally don't really feel like having an additional 800 members on the site with zero posts and potential random trollish users such arcade can attract (you should have seen the old arcade, which was not tied to the forum database. People kept spamming the shoutbox and someone was posting random anti-religion quote). A lot of the games were on the old arcade and can be found elsewhere online. The only reason why it's there is because people kept bugging me so I put the arcade back up.

I admit the Starcraft game is very cool, though ;D

On the start of this reincarnation of Omnimaga forums you saw many of the users battling a bit for the medals, though. Like necro, DJ, etc..
I like some games like Hexxagon. I competed for some for a few time. :P I still have one.

Why don't we create a post in introduction topic for the FAQ and lock it, and sticky note it?
Usually people will go to introduction section first

That's a good idea.  Who wants to write it? :D

if people can provide questions, I'll try to answer it in my best ability. Or it could be group effort

Ya, I can do it too if someone just give's me a group of questions to answer. I can try to think of some of my own too.

Couldn't we just post a topic linking to the help section I talked about in earlier posts? It contains most stuff member needs, from posting to profile settings. For the stuff that aren't included by default in SMF like custom profile fields and the rest, I could simply add Q and A's. Idk if I'll write it, though, since help on forum usage is already available at http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=help

Well I think the reason they are saying this could be needed is because people don't usually go looking for that type of thing. Honestly, I didn't when I first got here. I just kind of picked up on things.

They just want something that answers a bunch of "noobish" questions that is directly in the forums so you can just see it go "Hey! I should probably look at this thing, could answer a few questions!" (Of course that would only work in a ideal situation :P (I'm talking about that response type thing, by the way :P))

Yeah true. I guess I'Ll see and if ppl starts asking questions or wonder too much how to use something, I'll add a link to the FAQ/help
