Title: Banning imageshack from signatures & avatars
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 18, 2010, 08:24:33 pm
It seems that Imageshack is posing a lot of problem lately with their slow and unstable servers, each server going down one after another. After Server 134, now it's 137th turn. I had to remove an image from Eeems' signature because it slowed down the forum loading process, forcing us to hit ESC or Stop to make everything stop trying to load and OmnomIRC appear.

Since it seems to become a recurrent problem with Imgshack recently, should I just ban Imageshack from signatures altogether?

If this is done, please list some suitable alternatives that both allow hot-linking and don't require registration. I used to know a few, but they've gone down since I've last used them.

Otherwise, I don't mind - so long as someone can indicate other hosting options.

As long as Photobucket still works, I'm OK.

Yeah, well, as hosting option there's Omnimaga, but then your sig image is invisible to guests :/ (since you would need to post it in randomness, as it would be irrelevant). Also, if the fact we have scripts in images enabled started to pose problems, I would need to disable this too, which would eliminate the possibility to use Removedfromgame Userbars as well in the process :/

Otherwise, there's Photobucket and Tinypic, I think. I'm not sure if they're reliable, though.

Photobucket has worked for me so far. I only occasionally encounter problems with some of the gifs I try to upload cuz they're too large, so I just attach them here.

I have the same deal as FinaleTI, I use Photobucket for all my photo uploading needs, except for large animated gifs for which i just post in Omnimaga

For my signature, I attached an image file to one of my posts and hotlinked to that. As far as I can see, as long as the forum is up and nothing changes, it'll always be there.

A question for DJ: Is this practice acceptable?

Does Photobucket require registration? If not, that works for me.

I think so, but its free and you only need an email

It is, but you have to keep in mind about a few things:

-When attaching a pic, it needs to be relevant to the discussion, and you must not start useless topics just to attach a pic, else it gets moved to Randomness. By being moved to Randomness, your signature becomes unavailable to guests.
-We cannot guarantee that scripts in image tags will be available forever on the forums. If we ever get security trouble due to abuse of this feature, we would have to remove it. By script I mean stuff like userbars.php?bg=lightblue&msg=Nostalgia%20%2D%20An%20Axe%20RPG&pct=3&lines=true instead of stuff like miniuserbars2.png.

I tend to not like photobucket due to the 'your account has not been active in the past 90 days' pic that replaces the real one when someone forgets to keep their account active.. kinda annoying imo

If I get some time, I may set-up something like imageshack for Omnimaga on my server. (I wouldn't recommend sharing it with friend and such because I'm not sure how big of a load my server can handle and I don't want millions of random pictures sitting around on the server either, but if it's just for Omnimaga members then it should be fine.

Also, I planned on adding a log-in to the userbar site that will let you edit your userbars there and make them normal "userbar.png" links. The link never changes after you made it and you'll have to log in to change anything about the userbar, but it'll make it to where you don't have to change the link on every site you use the userbar for anymore. Of course, I'll keep the old system up so you can use the userbars without signing up and logging in if you want, but it'll be easier for you and Omnimaga to load. This is much harder to do right now since I just don't have the time and I don't quite have all the information on how to code in a log-in system yet but I'll have it implemented EVENTUALLY.

An idea I got would be an image gallery built-in the forums, but my concern is that 1and1 only allows 210000 files total. If such image host became popular, we would fill that up very quick.

Your idea sounds cool, good luck with it.

Now that I think about it, I'll have some time this weekend and I already know how to make the image uploader, so I'll do that this weekend and have something functional then. It probably won't look pretty, but it really doesn't have to as long as it works.

The userbar thing will not get done then though.

@ AP: What is the secret in your userbar that's at 1%???

That's a calc project I want to get done. (Might be my last ever.) I have notes written down for it, but that's all I got finished so far.

It'll probably be my last project ever and I want it to be in Axe. If I have too many issues with Axe then I'll just have to make a Basic version (probably with CIII for the advanced memory management) but it'll definitely be something with features for gameplay that haven't been done on a calculator yet. Whether it'll be as fun as I imagine or not is yet to be seen.

Otherwise, it's a secret. ;P

I wish you good luck on both this and the image uploader. For the uploader, tho, make sure to back your stuff up often, including rfg and the generator, in case ppl upload crap while you're busy and 1and1 takes your site down.

Hm... what could someone upload that would make 1and1 shut the site down?
I can limit it to just picture files and have a max file size no problem.

Well, my concern is if the uploader gets leaked outside Omni and some trolls starts uploading porn, goatse and even worse stuff. Just saying it could become out of control

Hm... true. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out on images uploaded there. I have an idea for how to handle it.
For the first month or so we'll just have to try our best to keep it only at omnimaga while I work on the code to help me moderate it.

Yeah that's what I thought, personally.

Of course a report innapropriate content button could  help, but I am sure some pics will go unnoticed.

Yeah, with how it would be set up first, it'll just be a page with an uploader then when you upload something, there will be a page that shows the picture and a link to the picture so no one can see what the other pictures are.

Then I can have it email me whenever a picture is uploaded and I can delete anything harmful myself.
Afterwards, I'll get together a 'thumbnail' script to make some thumbnails like imageshack does.

Another idea is that later, I can have a gallery of everything uploaded that anyone can look through then add the report button. (nice thought actually)

Though, I don't think we'll have to go that far.

Aaah ok. What if you became 10x more busy than you are now, though?

Otherwise, I guess it could work, though.

True... I could get more busy easily.
The fastest way would be to get a volunteer mod or just really hope that nothing bad happens for a year or two while I'm still in college.

Yeah a mod could be an idea too. You would just need to make sure he remains active. My idea would be to allow him to get notified of new content at least once per day or something so he won't forget to check regulary.
