Title: Explanation of why the Randomness section can vanish from time to time
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 23, 2010, 03:13:39 pm
In order to encourage calculator and constructive discussions on the forums, the Randomness section goes offline shortly after it reaches at least 10% of the entire board post count or 13% with the introduction section included. Afterward it remains offline for the next two weeks after it went back under 10% alone and 13% with the intro section included. The intro section remains unnafected.

So if this forum section suddently vanishes every now and then, you now know why. :P

This is to prevent episodes like what happened on the old Invisionfree board, where during some periods of the year, about 90% of the entire board activity was in randomness at the expense of real discussion and projects.

Yeah this is to prevent Randomness from having like 50% of the entire board activity, like what happened on the old Invisionfree forums. Otherwise it sucks because then Omnimaga is seen as a spam site. :/

Btw right now it's at 9.61% and 12.62% with intro included.

Oh and this is also to prevent having members with like 999 posts in Randomness and 1 outside it. :P

It makes sense, though.  If people are focusing too much on what doesn't get much done, what good does that do for the forum in the end?

Yeah this is my concern. Last Summer this went close from happening. One day about 50% of the active topics in the New Posts section were in Randomness. Today if this happens it makes the new posts section hard to browse. X.x

On the old board I closed the Randomness section for an entire Summer once to encourage relevant discussion. X.x

Why is this in randomness? Also, the two week thing makes it kinda unbelievable. Break out the colored text! :D

Oh it is in randomness but it's still serious. I pinned it too. That said, if people don't take it seriously I can easily include it elsewhere, though. :P

Okay then, can we increase the percentages for each thing semi-dynamically.  E.g., if we have like 20 new users because of KOS release, or something, can we immediately increase the percentage.

Also, instead of two weeks, how about 3 days being offline. Just some ideas.  Overall, I think the bets way to prevent randomness from taking over is to prevent new users from being in randomness.  Like 10 posts or so to use it.

It should be interesting to see, though, because many randomness conversations will essentially "die", because no one remembers them when they come back.

Well I said 2 weeks because I may be busy and forget to check if the percentage went down.

Also I may increase the percentage if EzPortal team ever release a mod that lets me filter new posts by category (I would allow the option to show all posts, show calc posts, show projects, etc.)

cool!  I was thinking though, if we did reach 10%, (we're pretty close) shouldn't this be moved in to the News Section or something?  because as Randomness wouldn't be viewable, people will wonder what happened.

EDIT:  if it closes, I bet I'll be the highscore holder of The Necropost Game as soon as it come back.  >:D

I might put it in the random discussion section or feedback/suggestion.

Speaking of a KOS release, the January preview is on track :)
[/offtopic] I think this is a good idea, I don't even look at randomness much anymore.

That seems cool ;D

Personally I post in some Randomness topics but I tend to not participate too much to a lot of them.

Note as a proof it could be worse:

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/20060714015926/http://s7.invisionfree.com/Omnimaga/index.php

4491 posts in randomness, 18451 on that board. This means 24.3% of the whole board.

http://replay.waybackmachine.org/20071021212132/http://omnimaga.org/index.php (As of October 21 2007)

8208 in randomness, 34522 on the entire board, excluding the previous database. This means 23.77 of the whole board.

On the old Omni website, despite having over 80000 fewer posts than the current one, we still had as many posts in randomness as we have, now. O.O

Yeah, and the sad part is that back then, 2 of the staff only posted there. I think both had like 3000 of their 1500 posts there and the 1500 others were during their first year on Omni. I remember sometimes where half of the discussion and activity was in randomness. X.x

Back then, however, the randomness forum was visible to guests and was called "spam". So the content was even more spammish than it is now. :P

Yeah, there are certain issues that he's dealing with now.  The least of his problems is KOS until his life has settled down a bit.

Yes, I was kidding :P
Unless he can warp the fabric of time* and post from the future/past, it doesn't look like there's a January 2010 release.

*or has database access

It's not YeongJIN_COOL. It's THE-BRIDGED-ONE.

Just noticed this got moved. Good idea, or it'd be disappearing with the rest of the Sapam section, defeating the point :P

I think putting it in Site Feedback would be a good idea though, since it's related.

Yeah good idea I guess lol. It migth also be worth editing it so it mentions that the post count includes humor and jokes but that the humor thread doesn't get affected.

That's a very good idea I think: this is avoiding that the board turns out to a trolling board :)

PS: DJ_O, I think you can remove me from your block-PM list, the incident has been a while ago now.

Woops I actually forgot lol. I'll go check to make sure you're removed from there >.<

Also by the way the spam section is now locked. It's still visible, but nobody can post there except in one topic (the one that just got moved there recently). Trolling is not a big concern, but quality vs. quantity is.

Did you read my answer (http://ourl.ca/14921/366948) to your previous post (http://ourl.ca/14921/366905) which was posted in the right section as opposed to your latest post, and which didn't mention that inexistent calculator that the TI-84 is (there is always something behind the "84" and it matters now that the CSE is out) ?

Actually the site search cannot find attachments, but I swear it was in the Elimination sub-forum at the beginning of a topic. It might be on ticalc.org or Omni downloads section too, though.
