Title: Forum post statistics
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 19, 2011, 12:20:14 am
There are loads of numbers in the forum stats page so I thought I would generate a graph of our daily post stats just for fun so you can see how our activity evolved over time. :D This was done by pasting all stats in Open Office then re-opening the saved cellsheet in Gnumeric. A few notes:

-The blue line with the red dots represents the daily posting stats, the black line is a 7 day moving average and the pink one is a 30 day moving average.

-Stats until Early 2008 are messed up because most of them are missing, so the rest is based on the monthly average.

-As you can notice, it seems that the recent arrival of many new TI-Nspire and Casio programmers have bumped the daily post count back in the high 300s, close to 400. ^^

Whoa, what caused the spike in 2007?

Blame Netham45 and Tenniskid493. :P (Note, about 600 of these posts were made in two hours)

hooray come 2011 we can be as fast as spammers.

As long as we don't just spam. :P That giant spike in 2007 was only in the "Last post of the year" thread. Netham45 and Tk493 both happened to be two timezones behind the board time, though, so the stats showed 600+- posts on Jan 1st 2007 instead of Dec 31st 2006.

Lol@the spike XD I saw that at first and i was like 'wtf??' :P

But seriously, this is really cool :D It really shows just how active Omnimaga has become, and how epic it is :D

Yeah, I am curious what next year will be. Last October we had like 30% of what Simplemachines support board gets, which is a lot, but I am definitively curious about if that activity spike we had then was the highest possible or if it could be higher the next time. Sometimes the TI community activity can fluctuate. I remember in Late 2001 and Early 2002 barely anything major would get released, then things picked up again, same thing in 2007-08.

On a related note, it seems the 500+- posts days are back.

I have no clue. It might be hard to check. :P (even harder if you meant 2006, since the database is gone...)

I wonder if it's because of the new TI-Nspire CX calculator news or the combined fact that Ndless 2.0 came out of beta and nDoom popularity skyrocketed, but for about 15 minutes now we registered quite a big spike of logged in users O.O (The screenshot to the left was taken 5 minutes after the others). Does anyone know what was the record? I saw 32 a few times before, but I'm not always online around this hour.

I had noticed that, and I was planning to include something about that in the *cough*http://ourl.ca/88645*cough*

I guess that could work.

Also we just had 38 a few minutes ago now. Post stats are steady since the past month, too.

That's great DJ ;D

I think our guest spike is due to nDoom, maybe the user spike is because of the CX. Or maybe no particular reason.
Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 25, 2011, 05:05:18 pm
Yeah that too. Also I am happy that unlike on the old board, 90% of the logged in users aren't just staff. :P (We had like 2 active non-staff member :P)

Hmm nice job keeping activity so consistent in the past few days guys. Not talking about the activity level itself, but rather the fact everyday was almost the exact same post count. :P

Wednesday 372
Thursday 366
Friday 364
Saturday 363

Last week this happened too from Sunday to Monday (351, 358 then 352). This kinda feels weird when it doesn't fluctuate more often at such level, considering a few years ago it was rather common to see a 80+- posts day the same month as a bunch of 10+- posts day. What's next? An entire week where everyday has 666 posts? O.O

And yeah it seems nDoom, Ndless 2.0 Beta, the Prizm hacking discussion (despite being lower since #prizm was created) and the several releases and updates lately has definitively brought activity back to October levels.

Let's just make sure to be ready if a popular game port ever gets slashdotted/engadgeted again, though, because gamers on the Internet, especially the ones that are more interested towards IRC than forums, are typically not the nicest or behaving kind of people, no offense to the few that actually are great people. I guess it might be good to set the chan +m again if that ever happens during a busy period. X.x Thankfully, we barely had any trouble on the forums, though.

Anyway, for a while we averaged at pretty close of 400 posts a day again and we started having more 400+ or even 500+ posts days again!

Yep. I remember a forum where it tracked if people still had a tab opened, but for SMF this would refresh the page constantly, which would be annoying.

The Game.

Great to see the activity still at such high levels tho :D

Lolyeah...I've seen others being used successfully at my school so I just need to do a little looking.

Code: [Select]
A trick that works with some sites...https:// instead of http://
There's a bunch of people at my school that use facebook that way
Would it be possible to do that here?

Yeah that works too... in certain browsers. Sadly Idk how to allow that.

My school uses IE, and it works for them.

btw that's why I have firefox portable

Post by: Juju on April 06, 2011, 10:18:24 pm
Well, for the https trick, the website must have it enabled, not all of them enabled it though. So it's supposed to work for all browsers who can support encryption or something (i.e. all of them).
Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: Darl181 on April 06, 2011, 10:18:58 pm
So, I guess the big question is--can it be enabled here? ;D

Whoever with access of the hosting or FTP, you may want to look at it, or ask said hosting for https.

Yeah. Personally I don't feel like messing with that right now.

Maybe at one point I should give you access, but I'm kinda scared of what your friends might do to the site O.O (after what they did with your server and stuff, such as on IRC x.x)

Yeah this is why I was always a bit relunctant, because his Minecraft and IRC server has a huge history of getting hacked by people that know him, who always manages to get his passwords, even Gmail and stuff. Otherwise I trust him personally.

He should stop giving admin access to his "friends" that did that. I think the issue is Minecraft x.x

Back on topic, there were two 600+ post days recently! O.O (April 13th and 17th, although on 13th I think 15% of those posts were Scout's :P)
Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: Juju on April 20, 2011, 11:51:06 pm
Well, it didn't happened since a while, and we have better security now (geekboy will tell you), both personally and on the Minecraft server, he will never get my password again :P Also they are not interested in trolling Omni anyway.

And, on topic, I think we'll break our 700+ post a day record really soon.
Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 24, 2011, 02:23:58 pm
Ah ok cool to hear. I think you should really avoid giving any privileges to them because they aren't trustable. Maybe they wouldn't troll Omni directly but do harm on the site for the only reason that you have privileges on it.

And yeah I saw one of the 600+ posts days was close to 700. Unfortunately I think it's gonna take a long while to beat, though, because we're entering activity crunch time now (thanks to Easter and exams).  I wouldn't be surprised if we even had a bunch of days under 200 posts too.
Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 01, 2011, 03:14:03 am
So it looks like May was a bit more active than I expected it to be. I was expecting something in the 8000 posts range, but it seems the earlier contest boosted activity during the second half of the month and we even got another 600+ posts day :D

Also notice how consistent our average seems to be since October or so. Since then it always remained in the 325-425 posts/day range and even with that expected activity collapse at the end of April, every day had at least 200 posts and now we're into a record streak of 300+ posts days (24 as of tonight). O.O

(On a side note from now on I'll upload the monthly posts graph in this thread, so I don't have to ask an admin to update the one in the post stats page every month)
Title: Re: Forum post statistics

Title: Re: Forum post statistics
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 30, 2011, 12:26:51 am
Ok, so June 2011 was possibly the most fucked up month in a looong while here, in terms of forum posting activity, even more than October 2010. October 2010 was more active than usual, but its activity accross the month was proportional with previous October months.

Now check June 2011 and compare with 2009 and 2010. It's like the complete opposite

I wonder if this year we will have 100K? Seems like we're going towards that, and we would need less than 6000 posts a month in average, but since the community lost a lot of regular members in the past few months I'm wondering if the new ones will balance things out?

EDIT: Holy crap, Cemetech had one heck of a giant drop in posts per day too this month. They even had a few 30-40 post days and they used to have 200 (even close to 300) every few day O.O

http://cemetech.net/about/stats.php

And UTI has like one post a day

Remember https://status.ourl.ca/statsgraph.php ?
Well, yeah, it is the image linked on the stats page.
I fixed some glitches up and added back the avarage-7 and avarage-30!
Not only that, the light blue on the bottom is the number of new topics on that day!

There are even some more hidden features with stuff you can do over the URL parameters:
start: the start date of the graph, in the format YYYY-MM-DD
end: the end date of the graph, in the format YYYY-MM-DD
height: the height of the resulting image in pixels, max is 1000

For example to get the posts between 12th March 2005 and 31st December 2011 with a height of 800 pixels you do: https://status.ourl.ca/statsgraph.php?start=2005-05-12&end=2011-12-31&height=800
Or all posts since 1st Jan 2015 with a height of 500 pixels: https://status.ourl.ca/statsgraph.php?start=2015-01-01&height=500

Enjoy!

Also legit 4-year necro ^.^
