Title: Forum Time Zone/ Time Offset
Post by: Jonius7 on February 21, 2012, 08:17:05 am
Hi everyone,

Today when I logged in I realised as I posted that the timestamps were off by an hour, an hour earlier than my GMT+10 (No DST) timezone. Then I just went to my forum profile settings. I had 14 entered in as my Time Offset, which I had set quite a while ago as the correct time. I pressed the auto-detect button and my suspicions were confirmed. It changed to 15. I wonder why this is so? Did something happen to the default forum time?

The only thing I can think of is that SMF didn't properly handle the DST conversion on the server.

Also the time seems off by 5 minutes. :P

Ah But in Queensland there is no DST all year around, so that's not the problem

And I think I did notice the 5mins too. Cuz I posted this at 8:13am, it says 8:08am

Btw if the time is reconfigured, make it so that if I'm GMT+10 then I can put in 10 as the Time Offset. Likewise GMT-5 = -5 offset.

Wonder for now if you can put 15 1/12 hours offset

W8 I didn't really check properly if there was that 5min offset still there.
Edit, looks like it's about 4 1/2m and it's still there.

Looks like it's been fixed I had to change it back to 1 hour earlier but now I think it's ok.
This post will test should be xx:51 am/pm
:w00t: It worked! when was this fixed?

Hmm after the 16 hour downtime looks like the offset has changed back 6 hours so when I had 14 for offset, now just 8 works (this is UTC+10)

Looks like darl181 has a problem with the "Today" "yesterday" labelling on posts. They are not showing up for him. Come on and say something!

About that...posts made after the downtime have the word, but others don't:
(notice the highlighted date and day of week, today is Thursday the 12th)

I guess maybe once everything is solved, netham45 should recount the post stats since the downtimes started and decrement the post dates of each message so it's in sync with the rest.

Possibly why I didn't have that problem was because I set the forum time to GMT+10 so maybe it was the next day already for me!
Did clearing cookies/cache or anything do any good?

Idk, now it's acting weird 0.o
Reply #8, from Thursday, is labeled as "Yesterday."
Looking at action=stats it seems like the forums know what day it is, the number of posts next to 2012-04-14 is increasing..

By the way did you guys have to setup your offset even higher or did it just reset back to zero after the server downtime?

When i clicked auto-detect it jumped from -3, which it was at previously, to -9.
Edit: and it's still 6 hours off..
Edit2: changing the time offset in forum preferences didn't change the time offset on the forums. Quick test, does this post say 5:09 pm 17:09 for other people not in PST?

It appears Netham45 has fixed it. However the posts from the downtime until now will probably need to be fixed.

Actually now I realised that my today/yesterday things are stuffed up now!
Maybe I didn't notice before or that Netham 'fixing' made mine look wrong...

EDIT: darl181 I think the 5 min offset was changed a while ago.
However now my time offset does not match the time on OmnomIRC anymore.
It would work so much better if the forum time offset matched GMT/UTC time. -5 would indicate GMT-5

Well it looks like the 6 hours that were changed before have been changed back so now that UTC+10 has a FTO of 14 instead of 8.
And the Omnom Times have been fixed up too!!!

The weird times above are because at one point Netham fixed forum time, but he didn't fix the messed up time of those threads. As a result, those thread are placed weirdly since they have lower last post IDs. As for forum time offset it works fine for me. I think it's an issue on your end.

W8 so it works completely on your end? So a GMT/UTC-5 would equal -5 in FTO?
For me a +10 equals 14 FTO but otherwise it works fine.

Nah I mean for example it's 1:52 AM on my computer right now, and the forum time is not off (except by 2 minutes but that doesn't matter). Server default time is GMT-5 by the way and forum time offset based on that is 0. After the downtime the server time became GMT+1 so since the forum offset was not changed, it caused new posts to be posted 6 hours ahead, while everything else was not.

Not sure why you have time disparity on your side.

W8 I'm not sure you get what I'm saying, but it doesn't really matter. The timestamps are perfectly fine I think, except for the 2 minutes you mentioned of course.

Well looks like it's changed back again!
The Omnom times are correct but when I checked forum timestamps it was wrong. Went to profile and autodetect and what was 14 turned to 8 which means that the 6 hour discrepancy is there again!

From another topic which bounced on this related topic:
Yay!

Question, though: Will the server now be permanently set on GMT+1? Because it used to be GMT-5 and since April 14th or so, all new posts have been offset by 6 hours compared to the old ones (kinda like on barrett server one day)
Hmm I didn't realise that the 6 hour discrepancy would mean GMT+1. All I thought was that it was the completely wrong time off by 6 hours :P

Just found another implication of the 6 hour offset.
I think the Time of Day statistics have shifted 6 hours so they are not accurate anymore.

Yep that sounds right, cuz usually at around 4PM (GMT+10) it would reset and the daily posts numbers would go down. But at this time the posts numbers are still low as they should be resetting at around 8AM (GMT+10) for me now.

They have resetted about 7 hours ago.

Yeah I did notice that. Going to take a while to get used to, because otherwise I was wondering (why are there so posts today?)

Oops. I must not have noticed properly I meant (why are there so less posts today at this time of day?) shoot that doesn't make sense fully.
