Title: How to get animated Avatars
Post by: Scipi on November 29, 2010, 11:38:44 pm
How do I make my avi animated? I uploaded an animated gif but as you can see it didn't work.

You also double-posted under 6 hours, lol :P

I personally use Photofiltre Studio but it's not free. There's also UNFREEz, but I don't know if it still exists. An alternate way is to save each frame in GIF, open them in virtualdub and save them in AVI one by one, then open the first, then append each avi segments to it, then save as gif again. Not sure if that would work for everyone, though.

For mine, I used The GIMP, I put each frame in a different layer, specially named them and exported as GIF. But I used a spritesheet (i.e. one image with all the frames in it, usually ripped from videogames) and not an AVI... Well for the AVI I think you could open it in The GIMP.

And is it a Caramelldansen?

It still exists, but it's a bit limited imo. It's not possible to choose different lengths for different frames.

/me turns into a grammar nazi

You probably figured it out, but you have to host it somewhere else. Uploaded avatars become still.

Could it depend of the compression used?

Also did anyone know animated JPEGs existed?

Actually nevemind, the person that did that just renamed the gif extension to jpg and it still showed fine in browsers. Apparently that was how you got animated icons/photo on your Facebook profile a while ago.

Probably, you already found out, but just make a .gif (using Photoshop, or any GIF Maker, I recommend a program specialized on that, like Easy GIF Animator) and upload it!

I found they existed because I think one of the old CaDan screenshots was an animated JPG. I could be wrong, though.

Well, apparently it just involves changing the extension, so in other words, it's not really a jpg...
