Nearly 2000 members - Omnimaga in March 2012
« on: March 16, 2011, 05:59:16 am »
After the dramatic events of the past few days, I went to the member list page (Misc -> Member List). And kind of analysed it by sorting it in several ways. I was surprised when i scrolled alphabetically that there were many users with 0 posts. So I pressed sort and what came up was at least 440 members had never posted! (it was all 0s until page 5, then 1s and 2s). This might be ok, but if you consider the trolling events going on and half of our members not even posting (600 had 5 or less posts), kind of questions the quality of our members (may registered this year and 2nd half of last year). Do they program? Do they know about calcs? And for the ones that do post (and are fairly new members), are they posting the stuff that we have seen over the past few months?

Sorry if i am taking this too critically, but this could be a relationship between the trolling and the members or something. Or i could be completely wrong

I have seen this too.
But I have posted constructive posts. I am busy on a project: MYST 89, so I don't think I belong to that group.

I think its going to be naturally harder for those of us who do not have TI calculators and aren't working on the lower-level development of the Prizm for the time being.  My posting is usually directly proportional to the activity on the Casio Prizm Discussion board and it hasn't been that active recently in areas that I am able to post in with reasonable certainty that I know what I am talking about.  I guess that can't be helped for now.  I'll keep looking for ways to be beneficial in other areas of the forum.

I doubt (answering the last question), but I can't understand why people create accounts and never post :S

I don't know either. I could see it at UTI, where you need to have one to DL tho.

@m1ac4 and stefan don't worry, you're prob at least on page 7, and no one would accuse you of being trolls (which are the real problem anyways)

I know I'm going to some negative respect for this, but I'll say it anyway...

That's not the relation. The only relation between the non-posting members and the members who have trolled is where they came from. Let's not forget where these fora are located: the Internet. Trolling is an inevitable fact of life for sites on the Internet. Let's admit that and move on. From what I've seen, the reactions to the trolling have caused far more drama here than the trolling itself.

As for what those members do or don't know, frankly I neither know or care whether or not they own a calc. They are members of Omnimaga who have not been shown to have any negative impact on the community (some exceptions aside). In spite of that, they're still being ostracized? While Omnimaga might be primarily a calculator community, it is not exclusively so. Lest anyone forget, there are boards for both computer programming as well as music. So, the issue of whether they program or own calcs is in my eyes rather disrespectful to people who have done no wrong and to the community as a whole. Furthermore, I think by attempting to blame any one group for the current state of Omnimaga (trolls aside, because they're convenient scapegoats for everything) one actually hurts the situation. Is any one group solely to blame? Trolls caused an initial disturbance, but it was the members of Omnimaga who reacted to it. Trolls will always be there. Such is life on the Internet. It's how we react to it that determines whether they influence us negatively or not.

PS: As an aside, another forum of which I am a member has several million members. Only a few hundred (at most) are active. A few more have posted once and gone. The vast majority of members sign up and never post. I have little idea why people do that on fully open sites, but it's not unique to Omnimaga nor any other forum for people to do it.

I agree with Qwerty.55, non-posting members have absolutely nothing to do with trollers and spammers.

However, this is a very interesting subject to analyse: >350 0-post members.

Agreed, I doubt the one post users have anything to do with it, they probably joined because of increasing popularity.  We should just ban trolls and ignore them other wise.  ;)

Shouldn't the trolls lie at least in the 5-post range anyways, so they actually had a chance to post trolling comments? :P

I was disagreeing with jhgenius01, so you agreed with me about disagreeing, and I agreed with you about agreeing with me about disagreeing with jhgenius01...?

Okay, I think I almost halfway understand that.
