Title: Omnimaga blocked in school
Post by: Princetonlion.tibd on June 15, 2014, 04:28:12 pm
For some reason, Omnimaga is blocked in my school, but Cemetech is not.
Is there any reason that this happened? I think It's the swearing, but I'm not sure.

The school decided omni was off-limits, could be anything.

We don't swear over here (not much, anyways). Probably listed under gaming-related web sites. Not much you can do about it.

Yeah swearing is kinda rare here even if we do not censor it, although it could just be 1 post or two. It's most likely due to the many games.

I don't know then. Our school blocks a ton of stuff. I was browsing on cemetech once and page 3 of a topic was blocked, while all the others weren't :P

If they block based on page content, I wonder if proxies won't be blocked too? The filter could detect what's on the page and the proxy frame, right?

I don't care about them performance-wise, but I hate how stores (especially BestBuy and Future Shop) mix them with regular laptops in display as an attempt to push them as cheap laptops towards people who are not paying attention. So poorer families or students will go like "OMG WOAH! A $200 LAPTOP??!?? WANT!!11one!11!!oneonone" then buy it for important school projects, only to end up discovering that it cannot run their favorite Windows 7 or 8 programs.

In other words, Chromebooks are not all that bad by themselves if you don't care about privacy nor being able to run Windows programs IMHO, but they're too often used to scam people (by trying to pass chromebooks off as regular laptops to unsuspecting customers).

Chromeos is a browser and a kernel. :P So not much you can do with it.

I think it uses Chrome OS.

And it's based on Linux.
This is getting way off topic

Chromebook means chromeos. Chromeos is basically a customized Gentoo.

Oh.
@google Gentoo

Oh, a linux like OS?

Gentoo is a source Linux distribution. Which means that you download everything as source instead of pre compiled binaries.

I prefer that  I don't have to do sources myself :P too hard for this newb

Back to the topic, the reason Omnimaga is blocked (especially true if your school uses Blue Coat proxying) is because of games.

One possible cause is the former forum arcade (http://www.omnimaga.org/forum-arcade-games/final-omni-arcade-highscores-(top-3)/); another is that Omnimaga is in general more games-oriented than Cemetech and other sites are. (Compare the programs featured in news on the two sites.) I've tried to get the label off (to replace with Computers/Internet which wasn't blocked at my high school) but failed :(

SOCKS is your friend :)

I thought the humor/jokes section (including the quotes thread which is located there) was visible to guests? ???

My bad; was that in a different forum at some point?

Yeah it was in the Randomness section before it was split into two sub-forums. Plus the spam section is read-only anyway :P

Thanks Eeems.
I was confused because one of the books I read had the same acronym for something else.
