Just a thought:
Could Gravatar (http://en.gravatar.com/) be integrated into the forum?
-
COuld you summarize what this does? Also I am against it if it uses javascript, java, flash, intensive PHP or any other stuff that will just slow down the forums.
-
here (http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/) is their developer resource page.
Gravatar has a lot of nice points, but the main one is that you can change your avatar on many different sites at once. It doesnt look like very extensive script. I know that stack exchange uses it, as well as a few other well-known sites.
-
Oh ok. I guess that would be great, but I'm relunctant about giving my password/email to a third-party. Who know if they aren't password harvesters that will later hack plenty of sites?
-
you would only have to give your email to them...
-
Ah ok but how do they change the password without the password? ??? They need access to all our forum accounts somehow, right?
Also if they host avatars themselves rather than on the respective sites, another worry I have is another Dragcave issue, where when their site will get popular, this will slow Omnimaga down considerably during browsing.

I don't really know how it works, I just thought it would be cool. but this might help: http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/hash/
-
Hmm I see. In any case it would be best that Juju and others scout the web for more info on that service before trying to install it on Omni, just in case it's not safe.
-
I agree. It would just be cool to have, thats all. If we cant have ok, if we can, great; you know what I mean?
-
Yeah I know. We just try to be careful on the Internet. There are many scams, phishing sites and such thing to fool people online.
-
If we do have Gravatar, have it as an option, not the only way to have an avatar. (Like, you could link to a url, upload it, or use a gravatar account).
-
It seems safe, I know loads of blogs and other websites who uses this service. It's kinda popular, so I guess it won't slow down Omni.
-
I think the way it works is similar to how the removedfromgame userbars work, it just has this image and you set your avatar to the URL. If you change the avatar at the URL, and the sites are loading it from there, then the avatar "changes".
(It's kind of like the dynamic avatars work, afaict)
-
I was about to say this, set your avatar URL to http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/<the md5 hash of your email>?s=128
-
Oh wait, then if you just use some scripted URL then you should be fine. :P
Omnimaga avatars allows scripts like that (although if it ever became problematic it would obviously get disabled)

oh, i thought that omni copied the pic for your avatar to omnimaga.org. I guess not. Cool.
But i think it would be nice to have a way to do this default.
-
You can choose to upload your avatar directly on Omni or simply link to one on the Internet.
-
Yeah, it doesn't copy the pic or anything. I could make my avatar something like this (http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/omnimaga4/images/omnimagabanner2010.png) if I really wanted to just by linking it. (tho it would automatically be scaled down :P)
