Title: Omnimaga Wikipedia page
Post by: mrmprog on April 01, 2012, 03:53:42 pm
I recently noticed that we as a site do not have a Wikipedia page. Unfortunately, I don't know a huge amount of the site history, but I think that a few of us should work on making a page.

EDIT: I was informed that omni had a page, but it was removed for not being important enough. Perhaps we shouldn't try again.

Yeah, something similar happened to a ticalc.org page. So don't feel bad. :)

Yeah, the Wikipedia editors might deem the page not important enough. Unless you say we jailbreaked the TI-Nspire, but I fear they would be like, who cares it's still not important.

Well yeah, nDoom was pretty popular when it came out, so I guess you can try your luck and create the page.

Not sure if it was created already, but might it make sense to draft something first so we're not just creating a blank page and adding stuff later?

Cemetech has a wikipedia page, so who knows if we put enough on there they might not delete it this time :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cemetech

I was thinking if we put stuff about axe, and some other major projects on it, it may not be deleted. However, I know very little about wiki page syntax and conventions.

Yes, that's a must. IIRC, Cemetech drafted a page first in the user's sandbox, and then published it to mainstream.

So, it seems like what we need on the page to keep it from being deleted is to show what we've contributed to the community.

There was a topic about this last year after Cemetech got one, but unlike Cemetech, we did not accomplish anything outside the calculator community (that got us several times on Hackaday, Slashdot, Digg, etc) and the stuff we contributed to in the TI community is not notable enough outside it to warrant an Omnimaga wikipedia page. Of course there is the Nspire jailbreaking, but the majority of it started on United-TI and yAronet anyway.

Two Ideas I have:

-Check if there are Wikipedia pages about the Apple iPhone and Sony PS3 jailbreaking controversy. If there are, then maybe one about the TI-Nspire hacking vs TI controversy could be added, with links to the massive UTI hacking thread, Hackspire, Omnimaga's Ndless section and the like. Else, I guess it could be embeeded inside the key factoring controversy page.
-If the calculator community related wikipedia page or the calc pages have a section about notable online communities, you could put Ticalc.org (main site), Omnimaga (Axe/Ndless/nDoom) and Cemetech (Doors/many hardware mods) there. If there's a French wikipedia equivalent, then TI-Planet and the yAronet 68K board.

I think that we should make one up. If they remove it we can just leave it here on omnimaga as a history page if not we can link to it

On a side note do not forget the pages on TI-Story too. I believe that several notable tools and games are missing there, so it might be good to add them and put references. If I get more free time I might also update the Omni page there as well (it has the 2001 logo instead of the 2004 one lol)
