Title: Omniurl.tk Rules
Post by: Munchor on March 13, 2011, 04:56:36 pm
I think that in OmnomIRC our link to the rules is bit.ly and I am in favour of having links in that super cool omniurl.tk :)

I think it looks better, what do you think?

maybe, but omniurl.tk doesn't support that, does it?  It only works for <omniurl.tk>/thread/message, right?

That's wrong:

We have omniurl.tk/en for logs :)

So it would seem.  Well, I guess I'm for it.  bit.ly is still smaller, though.

If I wanted something smaller, I'd use goo.gl but I want something customized.

Well, it's not overly small like goo.gl and bit.ly, but it does the job, IMHO. I like it.

And yeah, it works for:

omniurl.tk/<thread>/<message>
omniurl.tk/en
omniurl.tk/fr

Maybe Netham could make an URL shortening service for other Omnimaga-related links.

It also works with downloads and attachments

I think it's omniurl.tk/a, f and d

I like the idea of using omniurl.tk for all our important links :D

Maybe have omniurl.tk redirect to the home page?

Nah not the home page. I would prefer people still use omnimaga.org.  Also on the forums and other forums, unless you need short links I would suggest using full links, to not hurt Google ranking.

I just added a poll so the admins have somewhat a source of the user's opinions.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. Omnimaga's already on top for many things, though, so omniurl might just tag along?

EDIT: Scout: Agree with what (in the poll)?

You could use a short help page on how to use omniurl.tk on the main page. Also, for Google rankings, I think it depends of the redirect type.

What I thought about was an Omniurl page where people can type a number or two to get to a download/post/topic, and a link to Omni below.

Yeah, good idea, you could paste a topic/post/download URL and it'll spit out a shortened URL. Would be nice.

Now my question is, most people seem to agree, will you (admins) change it?

I think omniurl.tk is Netham45's domain.

Yeah unfortunately no one other than Netham45 have access to it, and since he's extremly busy or has other interests nowadays it is not guaranteed the change will ever happen.

Nice, it would be good if it also did downloads, downloads file info pages and attachments.

Nice, it's really convenient :D Can I suggest putting the output in text box? That way it'd be easier to copy and paste the shortened URL.

Yeah, I thought of a copy to clipboard button, but seems there's no real command that works cross-platform.

Also, all the URL types (download, file info, attachments) works now.

What about outputting to a text box though? It would be easier to select everything in the text box.

And you could even do onclick="this.focus(); this.select()" to select everything automatically :D

Yeah, that could be nice. Just modified it to make use of textboxes. Also, thanks for the javascript snippet :P
