Title: ourl.ca redirects
Post by: Deep Toaster on December 26, 2011, 06:07:59 pm
Can redirections from omniurl.tk be made with status code 301 (permanent) instead of 302 (temporary)? Google sees 302 redirections as standalone pages, so it thinks there are dozens of each page on Omnimaga—for example, http://omniurl.tk/3808/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49415/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49417/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49418/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49419/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49420/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49421/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49423/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49425/, http://omniurl.tk/3808/49429/, and so on all redirect to the same page, but Google sees them as ten different pages.

Might be good ideas actually. I wonder if it could also help on SEO?

That's pretty much SEO we are discussing here. So yeah, good idea.

Another option would be to remove omniurl.tk from Google, but that might just drop thousands of references to Omnimaga.

Well, each post have a different omnimaga.org URL, so Google views it as 10 different pages anyway. And Google should follow the omniurl.tk links, much like they never index tinyurl.com or bit.ly URLs.

And as Juju mentioned here (http://omniurl.tk/12039/220157/), http://omniurl.tk/ doesn't redirect to the home page correctly.

That was a few minutes ago, when discussing what domain name could be used as replacement to crappy dot.tk domains (since apparently OmniURL violates Dot.tk TOS)

That would be nice, but it costs like $80 a year.

Also I worry about how much the site would get blocked at most places for being an adult site :P

necro :P

I've recently done some work to clean up ourl.ca's redirects. Now whenever it is used it doesn't fill up our log with 404 errors. I've been unable to track down why it doesn't redirect to omnimaga.org with no arguments though.

That is good to hear. I hope you can fix the latter, though :)

I hope so, I've just been unable to figure out where the redirect is happening. I'm going to eventually do a completely rewrite of ourl.ca to allow for an admin panel that can control the rewrites dynamically.

EDIT: It seems that it was fixed, my browser just had the old redirect cached.

Speaking of log spam... Sorunome, go fix all the errors from your stuff. I'll fix up the tool I gave you to allow you to do searching of the logs.

EDIT: Done, just run 'apachelog help' to find out it's usage.
