Title: Please Help (unable to login)
Post by: alevineman on March 04, 2014, 07:05:31 pm
I have waited a day now, and Omni still says "You have exceeded your login attempts" after I merely messed up typing my password once. I now have to use a secondary chrome account merely to use Omni. Can somebody fix this? The "Calculator Stuff" chrome extension is useless if you do not have your account.

I would disable that plugin for now as it has not been updated to work with the latest smf version we are running and until it is it will probably cause a large amount of issues.

If by Calculator stuff you mean the Chrome post notifier, you should disable it for Omni (or entirely if that still causes problems) because Omnimaga now has something like this built in.

I also had login issues, but it was different: Basically I just got logged out randomly when posting a message a few minutes ago, but it only happened once.

Yeah mdr1 has the same problem. I reported the issue via ourl.ca/issue (although it would be better if each user do it on their own in the future), because there could be many more users that can't login than we think, but won't necessarily tell us.

Someone recently said that this board uses the same cookie as the old board, so I think it's also a cookie conflict issue, so maybe admins will have to change its name. In SMF admin panel if you go to Config->Server settings->Cookies and sessions, there should be a cookie name like "SMFCookie11" (that's the one on TIMGUL archives), so if, for example, it's called SMFCookie533, it could be changed to SMFCookies472 and maybe it might solve the issue. The only downside is that this would result in every single user getting logged out and having to re-login again.

I've disabled what could be causing this.
You will have to clear your cookies to get things to work again. Using the same cookies as the old site is not the problem. It's that you have been flagged as attempting to login too many times (via the feature I just disabled) and a new cookie is created to keep you from logging in until it has expired or been deleted.

We will not be renaming the cookies for the forum.

How long does it take before it expires? If it's a long while (such as a month), would it be good to have a warning on the site with instructions on how to get around the issue, since many people won't be reading your post?
