Title: Quick edit
Post by: Deep Toaster on September 26, 2010, 12:53:34 pm
Just noticed that quick edit link in each post. How long's that been there? It's pretty useful, for those of you who haven't noticed it yet.

Here (far right):

Oh... wow... I just noticed it now o.o

I think it has been around for a while since TIMGUL forums also have it, but it is hard to notice since it's not at the same place as other buttons. I should maybe change the icon...

EDIT: I wonder if it works in this browser...

Wow, I'm the first one to have found it?

Yeah, I think you should change it to match the theme of the other buttons. It's really useful, but apparently no one notices it :P

Ah well. The only thing I don't like about it (apart from the fact that it's so far to the side) is that it doesn't support that Alt-S trick.

I wonder why they didn't put it in the QUOTE MODIFY DELETE SPLIT string of buttons. On Invisionfree there was a javascript mod that did that and the button was added there.

Maybe it would look weird next to the Modify thing, with two buttons doing almost the same thing.
Title: Re: Quick edit
Post by: Builderboy on September 26, 2010, 01:42:49 pm
Yeah its probably just to distinguish it as a special kind of button
Title: Re: Quick edit
Post by: Deep Toaster on September 26, 2010, 01:57:18 pm
So is it possible to change the button's appearance, or is it in the SMF coding?

So that's what that icon's for... I've used such a feature on other boards, but I didn't know Omnimaga had it...
That'll make things so much easier...
Thanks for enlightening us! ;D

No problem. I didn't realize what it was until today, because it always seemed to be on top of the IP thing, so I'd assumed they were related.

WOAH!  WIN!
Title: Re: Quick edit
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 26, 2010, 03:12:02 pm
Personally it doesn't look much like an EDIT icon. When I have time, I'm changing the image. The pencil in it looks like an horizontal bar and the losange not like a sheet of paper. I might simply make a modified version of the modify button just using the small icon to its right, but larger.
Title: Re: Quick edit
Post by: Deep Toaster on September 26, 2010, 04:01:42 pm
Can I make a suggestion? Maybe make it just like the other three (or four) buttons, but with the words "Quick Edit" on it, and maybe just a simple pencil for the icon.
Title: Re: Quick edit
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 26, 2010, 04:04:13 pm
Yeah that's what I thought. I am not sure if I can modify the button that way but I'll see what I can do.

Yeah, that's what happened with me. When I saw that it wasn't a rod sticking out of a flat surface, I suddenly realized what it could be.

weird x.x. I guess that might be a Chrome or SMF issue. I wonder if it even works with IE8

Actually, I'm using Chrome right now. The first time I used that button, yeah, it gave me a really tiny window that I couldn't even adjust, but it's been fine ever since :-\

Inside of Chrome it has been fine?

@DJ
I'm pretty sure it's a Chrome thing. Because code boxes inside of spoiler tags will be super tiny on Chrome, for me at least, too.

Yeah, it was really weird the first time, but after that, it was exactly like the Quick Reply box and was totally fine.

woaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh i never noticed that either.... and half the forums I'm actually active on are SMF lol
Title: Re: Quick edit

I think they definitively did not choose the right icon and location x.x. Same for the report link at the bottom. It's so small. I only saw it in late 2009 or something. SMF is nice but there are things that are kinda hidden that should be less hidden. On top of that, by default, SMF has no new topic/poll button on the topic post views, so to create a new topic, you need to exit the topic and click the button from there. I changed that in the forum skins.

Strange things happens around here sometimeseverytime :P

Anyway, I shall try working on a new icon soon. Hopefully it is more visible/noticeable. I might make it a different color.

Yeah, but I think it's Chrome :)

Anyway, hopefully it'll let you change the icon. You're right, it looks weird and hardly noticeable now.

Changing the icon is simply a matter of replacing the image located at http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/omnimaga4/images/icons/modify_inline.gif and the other forum themes. It should be easy unless it's a fixed size.

I spent the last hour making a new icon from the other buttons. It took a bit but I think I managed to make it look decent enough. I wanted the text to fit so...

At least it should be more evident that it is a quick edit icon.

The icon is nice, but I didn't have a preference to anything.
Just the same old paper icon.

Yeah the issue is that the old icon simply looked like a white losange with a yellow minus symbol on it. x.x

At first view, when I noticed it, I thought it was a post collapsing icon.

Just to let you know, Safari also has that problem (at least for Windows; can't check on a Mac because Omni is blocked at school :().

I fixed the extreme code stretching issue in Opera. Apparently, Opera 10.60 and above got rid of nowrap support in CSS properties.

In order to encourage people to switch to Opera or Firefox, I made CODE boxes even smaller in Chrome, though. MUAHAHAHAA!! :evillaugh:

Just kidding, but I haven't found the Chrome issue yet. :P

Yeah, the box is really small. Safari on a mac. Also, I've noticed that when you click "quick edit", it does the same basic thing if you only have one line in your post before you edit it.

EDIT: Yeah, this one does the full box because it's more than one line.

Glad there are fixes :D

Too bad about the Chrome issue. What (HTML) tag does the forum use for the quick edit box? Maybe someone reported something similar to Google already.

The quick modify button is actually just an image which calls the modify_msg() command on click.

Bug report:
The Quick Modify button seems to be the same as before in other themes, even though the Quote/Modify/Delete ones are changed.

Thanks for the report. I'll look into that later. This also means I might have to make a new icon for the new theme.
