Title: Site Mods
Post by: Netham45 on October 30, 2011, 06:45:39 pm
I've been looking through the list of SMF mods and I've found a few that I think we should have.
Strikethrough means I'm not installing the mod.

Remove MOVED topics from feeds (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2138) Installed
Quote Helper (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=782) Upon further investigation, I don't like the look of this one.
Additional Polls (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1586) Completely broken in every way possible.
Instant quick reply (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1214) Installed for Omni v5 theme

These are provided by the existing plugin

Code blocks
Line numbers in code blocks* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=356) (Installed)
Select all and copy code for code blocks* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1285) (Installed)

Misc
Clean times (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=105) (Only compatible for 1.0, not 1.1. Not rewriting.)
Translator* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2794) This mod is for 2.0+, I'ma look for a mod that'll work on our current forums.
Donation mod* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=273) This one is really ugly code-wise, and it's broken. I'm not going to dig through it to fix it.

Here's the mod site. (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/)
Yes/no?

Edit: I'ma go ahead and install the ones with *'s next to them, since they aren't really controversial at all, and I think that they'll be liked by everyone. :D

And the site is down. So I won't look at them now.

We already have a share button for multiple share sites ( although it is missing G+ ).

Make sure to test the changes though thoroughly to make sure it doesn't mess with the other mods we have installed.

A lot of these mods sound great if we can get them to work.

Yea, I've been poking through all of them to make sure they don't interfere. I had to fix the code block line number one, it was replacing a very large chunk of code that included a couple other mods when it really only needed to add like 3 lines.

The ones I change will have their version altered to -Netham45-X, where X is the revision count for my edits.

I like the code block ones, but I guess you were gonna install them without anyway.

About the ban button it's best first to make sure the future CoTs won't automatically gain mod powers like before, in case someone bans everyone like what happened on IRC in August x.x

As for instant quick reply, would this use AJAX/JS? I would prefer to minimize slowdowns on the site. Facebook is already slow enough on old computers.

As for the bot mods make sure they won't slow down registrations. If you install any, make sure that they're set to accept registrations when the hostname server is down, like I did with Stop Forum Spam, and make sure they're not ridiculoysly hard to get through for legit members.

Also SMF site is down (like usual) so I can't check what other mods are.

Also for the moved topic removal from feeds, would this remove moved redirects althogether? Because tghen people will think we deleted their topic.

Ajax speeds up sites on medium to new computers ( My laptop, which I don't consider too old works fine on most sites and the ones with Ajax work a lot faster then the ones without. )

Ah ok, but I remember on Facebook when on my single core 2.93 GHz comp sometimes Opera froze during 10 seconds when I posted something. It was because FB had a shit ton of AJAX running at once. Another example is OmnomIRC in Firefox for some people (although it's much less bad with the new version of OmnomIRC)

Yeah maintaining a ton of active connections can slow things down. If there isn't too much to the ajax, like a simple send some data and receive the reply only once per action then it shouldn't slow down older comps too much, if at all.

Yeah. Also with AJAX we gotta keep cross compatibility in mind. It tends to break in Opera sometimes, for example.

I have Omni optimized for a bunch of active connections for OmnomIRC's sake.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 31, 2011, 12:12:43 am
Good to hear. Does it throttle the amount of connections from the same IP like SMF site used to do? (After 5 requests in a minute the site stopped responding althogether). OmnomIRC throttled connections as well before, so if I switched tabs 5 times in one minute, it stopped responding for a while.
Title: Re: Site Mods
Post by: Netham45 on October 31, 2011, 12:24:55 am
I throttle bandwidth usage, not requests. It's limited to 50K/s for OmnomIRC and an additional 250K/s for Omnimaga.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 31, 2011, 12:48:16 am
Ah ok so that might explain it, right?
Title: Re: Site Mods
Post by: Netham45 on October 31, 2011, 12:49:17 am
Actually, OmnomIRC stopped updating because it gets confused when you click tabs really fast.
Title: Re: Site Mods
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 31, 2011, 12:50:04 am
Oh ok. I wonder if that could be fixed? Sometimes we click the wrong tab or just want to check if new activity occured. :P

Code tag scripts are brokeneded again :(
Title: Re: Site Mods
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 01, 2011, 12:26:01 am
Darn... I hope those mods won't give too much hassle. X.x

I remember trying many and having to restore from backups because they would wreck the site. X.x

Btw I like the new quick reply style. It reminds me of Facebook but isn't too slow.

EDIT: Btw code tags select all option still works fine for me. It's Copy to clipboard that doesn't. I think clipboard should be removed altogether. People are able to just CTRL+C. It's much faster and even selecting copy through right-click isn't much slower than clicking a Flash link.

EDIT 2: OK here's a detailled opinion from me about those mods below:
Adds a ban button in posts, useful for spambots* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1962) (Installed)
Another bot tool* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3187) (Installed)
Yes, as long as they won't make it harder for legit members to register, especially if those mods relies on a third-party server that often goes down. Example: When we used RECAPTCHA, nobody could register when RECAPTCHA was down (which happened often).
Posts
Highlights in posts (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1717)
Only if every bug reported in the mod comments are fixed. Also it uses GLOW apparently, which only works in IE6.

Post box resizer (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=649)
Not sure if really necessary, although I guess it could be handy for some people.
Reason for edit mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=349)
Yes but do not force people to give an edit reason. By the way there was a mod that stored previous post edits like Wikipedia does, which could be handy if the edit feature was abused, but it was SMF 2.0-only and apparently took considerable amounts of database space.
Topic Starter Mod (Shows OP by adding a blurb under their name (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=790)
Good idea I guess, but make it not too intrusive.
Topic Prefixes (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1752)
As long as it doesn't allow people to post color/bold/resized text in their topics and cannot be abused so a new member posts stuff like [[ABSOLUTELY FUCKING URGENT!!!]*****=====HEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!======*****, I am ok with that. It would definitively be good if it allows help topics to be marked as solved.
Topic Descriptions (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3012)
Yes. I always wished we had that, like on the old board. It can help giving more clues what a topic is about.
THE DISEMVOWELER! (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=778)
No please. Let's not add such stupid mod and let's moderate seriously. It might even give Omni a reputation of trolling their new members.
Remove MOVED topics from feeds (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2138)
Yes as long as it doesn't remove all MOVED redirects from the forums too, so new members won't think their topic got deleted because they can no longer find it. Also make the OmnomIRC post notifier so it doesn't notify of MOVED links or at least make it so it says a topic was moved.
Quote Helper (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=782)
That sounds too gimmicky IMHO. In the end it might cause more problems than it's worth and make the quote option fancier than needed, making it harder to use. If you add this, make sure it's possible to use Quote normally by default.

Instant quick reply (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1214) Installed for Omni v5 theme
Yes, seems to work fine so far too. You should maybe add it to the other themes too.

Social likes
Facebook like button (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3153) OR This one (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2543)
Google+ +1 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3069)
No. We already have social mods installed. We don't need a second FB like button. Maybe a Google Plus button could be added, though, since the AddThis mod we got seems to lack one

Code blocks
Line numbers in code blocks* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=356) (Working on updating)
Select all and copy code for code blocks* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1285) (Installed)
For the first, no if it's gonna get included in Clipboard. It's gonna make pasting code for use in program ridiculously hard. Otherwise, then go ahead. For the 2nd mod I would just disable copy to clipboard. People can just click select all then manually CTRL+C or right-click/copy.

Misc
Clean times (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=105)
No, just plain useless and most people are used to reading time in digits. It's too Gimmicky IMHO.
Translator* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2794) This mod is for 2.0+, I'ma look for a mod that'll work on our current forums.
Not if it's gonna slow the site down. Also TI-BANK had this installed back in 2005 and you have no idea how terrible the translations were... not to mention it translated the entire site. If it's just a small button in posts that lets you translate from there, then fine.
Donation mod* (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=273) This one is really ugly code-wise, and it's broken. I'm not going to dig through it to fix it.
No. We already have a Donation mod installed (see front page). It's built-in Ez-Portal. We don't need a second one.

Woo, we have a lot of mods.

Or do you mean when you move a topic, it moves back to its original location? O.O

The AJAX appears to not work in SSL. I'm not sure if it's something I can fix.

It's either requesting http:// statically on the requests, or something just doesn't like SSL.
