I have an idea to translate omnimaga news... And I did some several months ago. Sometimes I gave the link to omnimaga to others. Sometimes I translated. Sometimes I just copy and paste the news and add a Chinese title.
Another idea is a [translate section]. Really hope articles on ti-bank can be translated... ;)

I don't really understand what you want. A Mandarin section? I don't think there are enough Mandarin speaking members for that, but if in a poll you found out that a lot of people actually speak Mandarin here (which I doubt).
If you want to translate Omnimaga News to Chinese, you can already do that. Translate them and then comment the translated text in the topic ;)
If you want something else, please tell us, we'll then think about it and see if it can be arranged or not.

I think it's just him, deep, me, mrmprogram(?), and a few others. My English is better than my Chinese anyway though. :P
-
你都講中國人嗎?Actually, I didn't know so many of you spoke it.
-
Sorry, I only speak a very small amount of Mandarin. I wish I knew more though, it is a very useful language. Something like this may help me learn more though.
-
@ephan, I have trouble reading traditional though. ;). That might be another problem for a chinese board.
-
One problem is that some browsers might stop rendering Omnimaga properly on some computers without chinese characters installed. I guess if there's enough demand there could be a survey and stuff, and maybe it could be added. We got lots of Chinese members, although most usually know English better.
-
I don't think we should support many more languages. We'll clutter up new posts and such with stuff people won't be able to read.
-
Personally I don't think there's enough demand for a Chinese section, as most of the members that would potentially post there would use English as their primary language anyway.
-
我不是中国人,可是我会说一点儿中文。
I don't know much, but I'm learning! :P
Still, a chinese section would be cool.
-
我用了一个翻译! ;D

Seconded. I don't want Omnimaga to become a place where there is a subforum for each language. I think English should be the main language and we'll keep French and German.

^ Plus there's that issue with rendering, as DJ pointed out. I think we all speak English pretty well, butAnother idea is a [translate section]. Really hope articles on ti-bank can be translated... ;)
sounds like a great idea. Is there an app a mod for that?
-
I can speak Mandarin and read traditional pretty well, but I don't think it's necessary. We have too many language boards as it is.

As I've said before, I think it's unnecessary.
-
Too many language boards isn't a huge problem, as we can easily put them in a subforum, but the problem is we need to not clutter that place either. IMHO it's best if there's enough demand on something. Notice how we didn't re-add a dutch section: It's because not enough people need one.

I think we should support those languages where we have significant numbers of fluent members. If there are a lot of chinese members who can't converse well enough in English, I'd argue that we should have a chinese board. Otherwise, there really isn't a need.
-
I know that google translate sucks, but what about a Google translate tool that you can choose the language to translat3 too?

We will probably need to wait to see if Ndless 3.0 and CX ever comes out. Since OS 3.0 and the CX came out the Nspire popularity has kinda dwindled around here, so we get much less international members (since the Nspire was very popular in countries like China). Ndless 3.0 and CX might boost traffic again.

Err. Just to revive this thread a bit. It does seem a bit of a big ask to add a Chinese board, but it wouldn't be so hard to add an #omnimaga-cn channel. We already have many extra channels it wouldn't be that much of an ask to add it. Then if people are using this channel, we can see if a Chinese board is needed.
Personally, I am of Chinese background, though I was born in Australia and am not native speaking. I have learnt both Traditional and Simplified, however I am learning Simplified atm. 我的意见好吗?

I wonder how well the current version of OmnomIRC could handle chinese characters, though. It already chokes on some french chars. X.x
But yeah the issue is not many people have access to Omni, let alone IRC, in China and all our currently active chinese members already speak english for the most part due to having moved a long time ago.
-
Last time I posted some Japanese characters, OmnomIRC didn't really choked...
Anyway, I guess you could go found a #omnimaga-cn already on EFNet/OmniNet and if there's enough activity, we can add it to the roster of languages OmnomIRC supports. Keep in mind that none of the Omnimaga staff speaks Chinese though, unlike French and German (which is in the same family as English, which is rather easy to translate).
-
We need to make sure the OmnomIRC tabs won't get too crowded, though. X.x
-
I don't know what to say really, cuz I'm not staff, but there are those extra channels, and #Omnimaga-anime seems to be a standard channel.
In reference to the crowded tab issue, instead of putting the full name of each channel #omnimaga-fr #omnimaga-de, it could be shortened to just fr, de.
Not sure how that would work though.
-
That might be a good idea.
-
Thanks Juju.
We'll have to get Netham45 to look into this.
-
Actually I agree. But we would need to make the names easy to notice and stand out from the other channels, else fr/en is much smaller than anime/spam.
-
Yes I thought of that too, they have to stand out. #fr #en #de
