Title: Spambot bans
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 09, 2012, 12:45:15 am
Would it be possible to check every bot bans in the admin ban list to make sure that none of them give my e-mail address and instead give another e-mail that Omni admins have access to? Because it's the 2nd time I get e-mailed by members who have trouble registering due to the bot bans and it seems the ban messages tells them to e-mail me to get their account pre-registered or approved. ???

Erm, our auto ban list catches hundreds...I'm not sure anybody wants to hand check them all.
Also, I'm pretty sure it they should be given one of our @omnimaga.org emails to send to instead of yours... I'll check in the admin settings to see if there is a setting...

O.O

Are they all separate or are they merged into a smaller group of bans? I know the ban message is located in the ban reason, but if you copied the same reason in 100 separate ban settings, then that might be a problem. Maybe run some MySQL query to mass update the reason? D:

Hmm, looks like there are a couple smaller ones with the specific messages saying to contact, juju or you to register. I'll go fix that.

Hmm, actually there was only one like that...and it had Juju's email... I don't know where the other stuff would be. The only thing for emails I can find is the webmaster's email, which is already one of the @omnimaga ones.

Hmm strange. Maybe it's Netham45 anti-spam mod? Because here's the ban message in question:

Quote
"Sorry, you are not allowed to register on this forum.Blacklisted hostname or email. You can still view the forum content, but not register. If you are a real person, e-mail o m n i m a g a @ g m a i l . c o m (remove the spaces) for instructions to register"

That would indeed be a good idea to merge all the spambot bans in one and clean all the older and unused ones.

Yeah I agree about the older bans or ones that got like 1-2 hits. Since then, their IPs must have rotated and now be used by legit visitors. When I was admin, I deleted old bans every 3 month or so, unless they seemed to have gotten dozen of hits recently.
