Title: Suggestion: Omnimaga Usergroups
Post by: pimathbrainiac on April 19, 2013, 05:17:04 pm
I noticed that on Cemetech and Ti-Planet there are usergroups that you can be a part of. Not in the sense of moderators and such, but in the sense of groups of users.

Is there any way we can add that to the site?

That's a feature of PHPBB, but most of the time it's usually desactivated and reserved for mod groups.

It's available under SMF 2.0 actually.

In SMF 2.0, IIRC, there is also a premium/charter/supporter member group that you can set up so the user can pay $10 or something to remain in that group for 1 year and the user either has adsense disabled (although in Omni case we have no ads to begin with) or he has access to extra sub-forums.

This wouldn't be about money. This would work like forumotion, but you guys would have more control than forumotion gives you.
Like, pianists, mathmmagicians, (I say it that way on purpose :P ), and favorite calculator model groups like 83+SE advocates or Nspire CX CAS advocates.
And the permission to create your own groups after you have X amount of posts.

Under SMF 1.1.18 (What we are one) this will not be possible. We may add something like this in the future. There are plans on an overhaul of the site, but it's eta is unknown as of yet.

I saw Omni Beta, is that what it will be?

I saw it too (the Maintenance mode warning of course lol, since we can't get in), but I seriously hope that a custom theme will be used instead (maybe a remake of the current theme, but lighter?) since using the default themes would be completely unoriginal and potentially kill Omnimaga (see what happened to United-TI after the IB 3.0 upgrade. Most people were complaining about the default theme and some people left because of it). Better take longer to do the massive upgrade right than rushing it then be sorry later.

In the worst case scenario where Omnimaga would stick to the default SMF 2.x theme, this is how the website would look like:

http://archives.mtv-music-generator.com/index.php?action=forum

And if you need to look how your profile will look like, just register an account on SMF official website at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php

GASP! It's a broken link?
Lol yeah when I fixed up an old site, many old users got back on simply because black is the new black.
Then, another Admin was traditional and was like "HEY! NOO!", banned me, and changed it back.
aforementioned site doesn't even exist anymore..

Speaking of usergroups, will there be a usergroup "OmnomIRC OP" which just has normal user rights, so that it only exists so that OmnomIRC can give these users OP status?

Regardless of if user groups are implemented, I think we should create the Omnimagan Guild of Pianists or something like that :P

Wait, why don't you have a piano avatar?
And was your team able to climb the pyramid?

I cleared out my dropbox and accidentally got rid of the avatar picture :P
I just changed it to a robot, but now that you found it, maybe I'll change it back :P

Omnimagan Guild of Pianists: let me think... you, Dapianokid, maybe some other people who I don't know play the piano, and me. That would be epic!

Add me then ;D

But I don't really see what would be the point of it. It would become sort-of-a-facebook.

It used to exist, but it later was given some rights on the forums and thus, the Anti-Riot Squad was born.

The admin would be the person who could win in a Jazz-improv-off. /me runs

Well now that the anti-riot squad exists, there should be a new "OP" group.

We can have a community vote driven competition, then. Best 12-bar blues wins. Post on Youtube and then on Omni.

No, just an all out freestyle piano competition. User voted wins.
I'll post a topic, and include your vids.

I honestly don't see what the purpose of this is at all. We pretty much already have this. Your member group changes as you contribute more. Also, once you reach a certain number of posts (1000?) you can give yourself a custom title. So essentially, this seems like a redundant request to me that wouldn't really add anything to the site.

Yeah, it is 1k posts where you can give yourself a custom title :)

Also, if you wish for others to know what calculators you have or if you play the piano, you could just at that to you signature

Yeah, also the file archives seem broken in places... and there are often no download links to files.

But this idea isn't about post numbers.. It's about simply being able to feel cool because XYZ!
and be among other people who are XYZ..
Title: Re: Suggestion: Omnimaga Usergroups
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 13, 2013, 08:25:43 pm
Yeah the broken downloads are due to broken upload. Someone should delete those files or link to a different copy of the files.

One thing that could be done to maybe encourage activity, though, is put Google ads on the site only for people who post fewer than 100 posts per month, so when they exceed that amount, the ads disappear until their 30 day moving average drops below that amount. Perhaps restrict access to certain sub-forums too :P

That's possible, but I think more likely it would encourage people to either make junk posts that contain no actual content or just use add blockers.

How can you say that o_o' it would be forcing people to post whatever they can think about to get rid of limitations <_<
Title: Re: Suggestion: Omnimaga Usergroups
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on May 15, 2013, 01:25:23 pm
Well it would at least encourage people to contribute rather than just lurking for months without posting and hopefully reverse the downward spiral trend. At some point, if activity continues going down, Omnimaga (and other sites) will need to use even more desperate ways  in order to convince people from posting instead of quitting calc forums to spend their entire time playing Minecraft and other stuff like that. As they would say in French, La survie d'Omnimaga et de toute la communauté de programmation est en jeu.

That's what the TI community has become in this age of smartphones, powerful computers and Minecraft. It's only going to get worse (although it might improve if the 84+CSE gets popular and if Axe/Grammer comes out on it), so eventually we might even have to pay members to post. (and I think the staff will go through every possible way before considering re-enabling the spam forum in its current form).

As for spam, you can always lower the post count requirement a bit, but do like Cemetech and count words per posts (excluding Quote/Code) and in addition to that also count downratings if the post has less than +1 rating. If somehow someone posts good posts only and still get ads then he can always report it (the staff will figure out it's suspicious post rating activity)

Of course, though, those ideas would be if activity really gets bad, such as Spring 2007 or Year 2008 levels.

Hey, can we please have a new usergroup just for OmnomIRC ops as it is a bit hard to develop op features without being able to test them yourself >.<

EDIT: Not more needed, I added now global ops in OmnomIRC itself >.>
