Title: terminal-based browsers
Post by: Sorunome on October 15, 2012, 10:03:57 pm
Hey, i thought it would be cool if we could make omnimaga look 20% cooler on terminal-based websites (and maybe do stuff like auto-hide sigs etc.)

I don't think that many people would use it, but it would be awesome as we are programmers  8)

the way a website looks in a terminal-based browser is really inconsistent across browsers and the terminals in which they are being run. it is possible to make a minimalistic theme that would interact with them better, though.

That's what i'm meaning, and auto-detect the browser and switch the theme then, and it should have stuff like smaller user info and no sig etc.

Use the mobile based versions. Those work perfect on the terminal based browsers.

That the 20% you where looking for ?

Yup, the wap version works pretty great in elinks.

IMO it could still be made better... (just sayin)

I thought these wap, wap2 and imode were built into SMF. Not sure how they can be tweaked unless a new version of SMF is used (and that's not going to happen anytime soon)

it should be updated. I volunteer to help.

Update SMF or update the mobile based versions?
Still there's no guarantee that an update in SMF version will have a new mobile based version that comes with it (unless you decide to check out SMF 2.x out for yourself).
But big problem is, as I remember DJ_O saying, this current Omnimaga theme is not very compatible with SMF 2.x, but more so all the mods and addons to the website, and would require a whole lot of work.

On the other hand, not sure if the mobile based version can be tweaked within the SMF, (unless there's a mod or addon for that), or some other method.

The mobile version could use a little upgrade, though. It really looks 1990's, lol. Just a color update would help things and maybe image support, assuming bbcode can be enabled.

You can add ;wap ;wap2 or ;imode to the end of basically any topic url afaict.
http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?;wap2

And yeah, it would prolly fit in better if the colors matched the site :P

Well, as it has been for a long while, upgrading to SMF 2.0x is out of the question.

Unfortunately it appears that the only FB connect mod for SMF 1.1 is not free http://www.smfhacks.com/social-login-pro.php so it would require heavy modification to http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2322 to run on 1.1x. (since upgrading Omni to 2.0 is out of the question since the current site is so incredibly modified)

You don't need a smartphone either. My Nokia views Omnimaga webpages perfectly fine.

Plus Nokias are indestructible. But memes aside, the reason why upgrading is impossible is that the months of work spent on the forum themes would be totally wasted and have to be redone from scratch, the Admin CP navigation is brutal and many mods would be lost (or need to be replaced with all settings lost like the game.)
