Title: Unresponsive website (at times)
Post by: thepenguin77 on April 06, 2012, 08:49:49 pm
I believe this started about the same time the bot filter was installed. What happens is that every now and then when I click on a link on omnimaga (just an ordinary link), omnimaga just becomes unresponsive. Stop/Refresh doesn't do anything at all and if I let it go long enough, chrome will ask me if I want to force close it. The only way I can get the page to load is to x out that tab and try again.

Also, it usually happens on the third omnimaga page I open. For instance, www.omnimaga.org > Forums > *click on topic in recent 15* <frozen> That topic will not open and the tab simply hangs on the Forum section.

Yeah it seems the server limits your amount of connections to Omnimaga, because it thinks you're a spambot. IIRC Netham45 went with that soft bot filter because with the other one, some legit users were just plain locked out from Omni completely.

Btw if you open the Register page, do you get an error?

Nope, I could theoretically register a new account.

I see. Maybe he still allows it, or maybe something else is affecting your site connection.

Hey it happened to me as well today at work. No problem at home though.

Agreed, this is a legit problem. Perhaps chrome only, though. (At least in my experience).

Question to you two, guys: If you logout then try logging in again, is there a CAPTCHA/security code form thing that appears? If so, then that's definitively the bot filter that is affecting you.

I've never had this problem but I use firefox so it may just be a chrome specific bug. I'll try browsing in chrome later to see if it happens to me there

Don't you have a Pentium III 768 MHz, though? ???

I do not get the captcha on login.

Then maybe Netham45 set something up that limits the connections, or it might be an issue on your end. I'm thinking this might be because the server is running in safe mode now, though.

I never got any captcha either.

A captcha? when was that installed? O.O
I think the problem I have in google chrome is that sometimes I load an omnimaga page and chrome says that the page is not available. It's like the whole site is offline. This only lasts a maximum of a few minutes. Usually force reloading or loading the home page eventually works.

Huh, now it's happening to me too (with Chrome). Once in a while it just stops responding in a particular tab.

It seems to be in loading the page, because posts I make load fine even when the page after submission doesn't load.

This is true, I get Omnom updating where as in another few tabs I can't load the website page at all. Just temporarily.
And when were there ever captchas? I strongly oppose to these.

Hm, it's happening to Facebook too. Must be a Chrome bug.

Maybe they changed something in Chrome causing too many connections to be done?

EDIT: Ok so I ran into the problem as well: Opened New Post in chrome, nothing happened. In Opera it took 2 seconds. It finally took 2 minutes in Chrome to load. So this is a Chrome issue.

For now I would recommend temporarily switching to Firefox, Opera, Safari or IE10 to browse Omnimaga and that you all report the issue to Google, since this is not normal that a site would take so long to load in only one single browser. (Not to mention people had it happen on other sites as well)

I'm using Chrome 18.0.1025.152 and on Omnimaga, when I try to load a page, it just goes completely unresponsive. Every time. (It only happens on Omnimaga, and before Netham's anti-spambot ip filter thing was installed, Omnimaga worked just fine (same version of Chrome).)

When you browse as guest does it happen too?

Could you also try when logged in, but with OmnomIRC disabled (click "Toggle")? I wonder if it might be Chrome having issues with javascript/AJAX?

EDIT: Also maybe it would be good to try Omni with javascript disabled on it.

If it's doing it everytime then how are you posting? :P
Usually a force refresh (Ctrl +F5 and Shift +F5) works eventually.

Also...
Spoiler For Spoiler:
NOOOOOO TO CAPTCHAS!!!

the game

Probably with another browser.

That won't work this time because it's not a cached script (since the script wasn't the one being updated; Chrome was).

We can't even force refresh at all because the tab actually freezes, so absolutely nothing works—not the refresh button, keyboard shortcuts, or address bar. Sometimes you can't even close the tab, but if that ever happens you can type chrome://hang in the address bar to permanently hang the tab, so you can close it.

Is the problem still occuring since the DDoS attacks ended by the way?

Has anyone who got hit by that slowdown problem in Chrome last week is still running into the issue right now? I believe Netham45 has disabled the anti-spam, to see if that was what's causing it.

I haven't, but I haven't hit it in Facebook either, so Chrome might have been fixed.

Possible. I guess what is important for now though is that it no longer happens on Omni, since that could have contributed a lot in users leaving.

Ah ok. I don't think I had this problem this serious. I could eventually escape with closing the tab and reopening another tab with a force refresh.
I haven't tried this stuff on other browsers such as Firefox.
