Title: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: shmibs on February 10, 2013, 11:19:59 pm
it seemed about time to update the old banner again, seeing as how the pictures and screenshots are a bit out of date. changing around the style completely wouldn't go well with the current theme, though. post any suggestions for screenshots you'd like to see up there! also, should "The Coders of Tomorrow - Since 2001" be changed to a different font? post suggestions for that as well!

EDIT: wip version below. tell me what to change!

EDIT2: ok, i think it's done.

as already posted in irc, for the calcs on the right, add a 84pcse in about the size of the 83, rotated a bit more clockwards and is over the 83 and under the nspire.
that are some details :P
leave reuben.
EDIT: and also leave 'THE CODERS OF TOMORROW <netham> since 2001'

Should add some newer games like Portal Prelude and such. Maybe some Prizm, Nspire, etc.

i already grabbed screenies from fzero, portal prelude, cadan, ash: phoenix, and jumpman. what else? (besides serenity)

reuben (the old one as it is still a classic)
the impossible game

Here are some of the files used in the previous banner attached below. A few suggestions:

1) There's no way you can get rid of the lobster, TI-Boy SE and the TI-83 Plus
2) It might be wise to get rid of the TI-Nspire and the Voyage 200. A TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, a TI-Nspire CX running gpSP-Nspire and a PRIZM running cgDOOM might be a good idea.
3)Although Super Star Hero is discontinued, it seems that the black face with red eyes kinda fits well so it can almost act as second "mascot" in the banner I guess :P
4) Try to keep the Zelda DLQ pic, along with Reuben and a few other old classics in there. Kraid from Metroid II

Also please keep the 2010 banner available for the v5 Lite skin so people can still use it. Only add the new banner on the v5 theme.

do NOT forget to add micro-text "THE GAME" in some corner.
or "YOU LOST" or something like that.

Definitely add a Prizm and a CX.

Also Derpy Hooves as an easter egg.

Let's keep ponies out of the banner please. We should focus on the main site themes rather than spam.

Also as replacement for the TI-Nspire:

(http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=15726.0;attach=14671;image)(http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=15726.0;attach=14674;image)

I didn't use gpSP finally because it isn't full screen and looked like crap.

but but but ponies D:

and how about THE GAME? :P
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2013, 12:19:05 am
As for the game you could possibly use a game screenshot where it includes "the game" somewhere or just randomly stick small text somewhere that isn't that visible, using an hard to read color, like the board stats had for a while.

gpSP can be fullscreen, you have to adjust the scaling in the options or something (top option iirc). The CX and 84CSE definitely need to go in the banner, and of course a lobster.

Add Pokemon Topaze :P
Seriously, it hit 606 downloads here (http://ourl.ca/12441/289272) so I think it would be pretty legit :)

Id agree we should keep ponies and things like "the game" out of the banner. An Nspire Cx should be added. Also possibly Ndoom and Fruit ninja. The theme itself could use an overhaul too, it's been a while.

nSpire CX, Prizm, 84cse, 83+, and the Titanic ;)
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner

Yeah I guess Titanium could be used if it fits somewhere. Probably smaller like the 83+ tho since it's less popular now though

Oh I didn't know that. Thanks. I am surprised considering gbc4nspire couldn't be resized :P

Any chance of my projects getting some love in the banner? :)

Shameless self-promotion aside, if you guys need any photoshopping help I'm pretty decent.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2013, 03:16:55 am
It would be very nice to have as many as possible :D

Also, if you really want many projects there but are concerned about banner size, what about separating the banner in 3 parts and only have 1 part animated?
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: persalteas on February 11, 2013, 04:46:49 am
Good idea, I like it.

But, please forgive my ignorance, what is a lobster ?
(Google translate says "un homard" in French. Qu'est-ce que les homards viennent faire sur Omnimaga ?)
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: TIfanx1999 on February 11, 2013, 05:25:05 am
It is a sea animal that lives on the bottom of the ocean. It is similar to a crab or shrimp. A google image search would give you an idea of what it looks like. Its relvant to omnimaga because long ago the member super speler started the rumor that netham45 was a lobster. That's also why there is a lobster on our current banner beside "tomorrow".
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: persalteas on February 11, 2013, 05:33:17 am
Ah. Okay.

I use the theme v3, there is no lobster on it.

Also, don't mess with the Retro theme, since I like it how it is and I use it.

/me likes the current banner, personally

How about we add some AXE stuffs in there?

Also: Portal Prelude, definately
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2013, 02:33:40 pm
The goal of the banner update is just to update the background with newer games. When that banner was made, Axe Parser and Ndless didn't even exist yet (at least publicly). The only reason why the Nspire already had gbc4nspire in the screen is because calc84maniac used nspire_emu which let you load Nspire ASM programs as OSes before Ndless came out.

However, I think that new games doesn't mean we should get rid of every classic there, though. Probably get rid of the ASCII games and text in some screenshots then add stuff like CaDan, Exodus, Fruit Ninja, Pokémon Topaze and such releases there. It should probably stick to projects from members that are not staff/admin of another site, though (although if they're mostly active here I guess it might be fine), to keep it as Omni as possible while not just sticking with staff projects.

I'd say I pretty much agree with DJ_O. Also, I forgot to mention it in my last post, but Axe Parser itself should be in the new banner. :D

@epic7: Just the banner, but I did suggest a new theme as well.

And when updating: I would say leave also the old banner as v5 skin and add a v6 skin :D

 I think I'd have to agree. :)
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 11, 2013, 11:48:07 pm
Well what could be done to prevent having too many skins (especially if the forums is gonna get upgraded at any time or another, meaning an extra skin to redo from scratch) is to update the v5 banner but not v5 Lite. The only difference with v5 Lite is that the background scrolls with the page. If people really wants the background fixed I guess v5 Lite could be edited so that it is again but renamed to v5, since today we are in 2013, not in 1998, so most people probably got a decent enough computer to handle fixed backgrounds very well. Otherwise v5 Lite could just be left as is if people don't mind the fixed background.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: Sorunome on February 11, 2013, 11:49:04 pm
Well, if the only change is the banner it is only a matter of copy-pasting the v5 created skins and editing the banner, which isn't so complicated.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 12, 2013, 12:48:31 am
Yeah but that's still an hassle as you need to navigate back and forth between lots of page and the SMF 2 admin CP navigation is crap compared to SMF 1 >.<

As for other themes they're all based on each others but they all have their own little differences :P
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 03, 2013, 10:29:27 pm
so... any progress? Or should I grab a bunch of images and update my old banner with some newer pics while keeping some classic stuff? I thought for this theme it would be nice to keep the banner similar, just with some renewal.

i had a bit of free time just now and decided to work on this again (or, rather, remembered that i was supposed to be doing it :P)
check out the first post (http://ourl.ca/18323/337907) and tell me what nspire/casio games i should add! ...and what i should do to take up that last bit of black space on the left! ...and anything else you can think of!
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 09, 2013, 02:08:30 am
I like the calcs and how they are placed now :D. If you have some free space, you could maybe include the v200 and 83+ pic from 2005 somewhere in the background, maybe in faded color to put emphasis on new gen calcs. As for games you could add a mix of the classics (the Link pic from Zelda: Dark Link Quest comes to mind, or the title screen) and the new games. Try to add some of the contest games maybe as well as some staff games. For regular member games, Pokémon Topaze battle screen is a must, as well as Matrefeytontias stuff. (Jetpack, Super Crate Box, etc, if not already added). ALso add Elimination by Hot Dog, along with his Slova game.

You could maybe keep Nspire/PRIZM stuff separate, like on the right of the Omni logo. Also I like the modified calc fonts for CoT. I will miss the Narkisim fonts a little bit but with the way you used the calc ones it looks better I think.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: Sorunome on July 09, 2013, 04:55:52 am
finally some more recent screenies! Maybe you could add like the impossible game?
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: Jonius7 on July 09, 2013, 05:17:08 am
I kinda like the old fonts, but the glow on the text on the in-progress version by shmibs looks good, and clean as well.
Perhaps Blockdude as one of the TI-nspire games?
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: TIfanx1999 on July 09, 2013, 08:13:35 am
Nice to see you working on this again. :) Only suggestion so far is to lighten up some of the black and white stuff on the far left of the banner. It's a bit hard to see. Oh, and the middle could stand to be populated with some more images as well.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner

Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 09, 2013, 01:11:13 pm
Wow this looks even cooler now! :D Only thing is that the Since 2001 text that overlaps on the TI-89T is a little hard to read.

Just one thing, do you think the ClassPad 400, HP 39gII and FX-9860GII could be placed there somewhere? The CP400 came out a few months ago in Europe, the HP 39gII last year and the FX-9860GII is still quite popular in France (even more than the PRIZM). In the future maybe the HP Prime could be added, but we better wait in case HP cancels yet another amazing calc model in our face.

EDIT: Here is how it looks like on the site:

Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: Sorunome on July 09, 2013, 01:22:47 pm
Maybe give that text some kind of box/text shadow to make it more easy readable?
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 09, 2013, 03:22:21 pm
Yeah that could work, as long as it doesn't make the rest of the text background look weird, especially how it might make the games too dark in the background. Maybe the text could be cut in half so shadows are only applied to the right part.

Also, another idea I had for Nspire color games: Maybe try to increase the contrast between dark and light colors, so that they are easier to see. A lot of Nspire games use colored bgs instead of white and very light colored floor/ceilings, so when converted to very dark grayscale it looks quite faded compared to 8x screenshots.

Yeah it looks pretty great right now. Of course later if you can ever managed to re-add Zelda DLQ and Metroid II: Evolution screenshots (Kraid?) and the Fx-9860GII and CP400 calcs it would be a nice bonus. :P

Banner update idea:

It's a bit rushed, but I managed to move TI-Boy elsewhere (right next to the black guy's eye that seemed cut-off) to make space for the HP Prime. I didn't add the ClassPad 400 yet, though, due to lack of programs and support for it (thanks to its slowness). An FX-9860GII behind the rest of the calcs wouldn't hurt, though.

Kidding, the banned looks good. The only thing is which calc deserves most to be at the front of the montage?
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner

Also the HP Prime is the only calc on which you can program fast games without having to learn something other than BASIC. :P

Thanks. :D I was kinda busy so I didn't do this earlier, but I felt it would be a nice addition, considering all calcs we show there are TI/Casio. It kinda made our site like if it didn't care about HP lol.

Of course, TI calcs dominates the banner, but two are in the background and the color ones are mostly there due to being recent and popular.

Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 28, 2013, 07:47:46 pm
I would rather have screenshots of projects that are already in fully playable demo stages or completed before adding them. This is a bit why I would prefer if the Illusiat 12 screenshot was replaced with something else at one point, while still showing the TI-OS GUI to show that it's the CSE. It would be a nice addition though.

The only way to efficiently do this would be to separate the banner image into multiple chunks and only have certain parts (preferably small ones) animated, at a very low frame rate.

Also in the past, websites with animated banners often had bad reputation of being unprofessional.
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: shmibs on October 07, 2013, 05:52:31 pm
another option would be to have multiple separate banners and have one chosen at random when the page is loaded, but that still requires all the work of actually making a second or third :P
Title: Re: Updating the Site Banner
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 07, 2013, 06:09:08 pm
Yeah that could work too. For the sake of consistency, I think the core part (the logo/fonts/slogan/colors) should remain identical, with only certain parts changing.

Anyway I think for the time being, the best would be to make sure that people are aware about what Omni mainly covers, such as my edit suggestion earlier (HP Prime :P).

Also, Omni has a serious SEO issue since the past three years: The META keywords that are present in each skin are, for the most part, no longer relevant to our current emphasis and main sources of traffic. Also IIRC there were too many of them, which apparently can hurt our ranking in certain search engines. That said I don't know if keywords are still used much by search engines but still, here are some examples:

For example, I seriously doubt that in the last three years our majority of visitors and registered members have come to Omnimaga specifically for the following themes in red (maybe combinations of them, but not them alone lol) and some are just too broad:

Quote
<meta name="keywords" content="Omnimaga: The Coders Of Tomorrow, Omnimaga, The Coders Of Tomorrow, download, projects, TI-73, TI-82, TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86, TI-89, TI-92, Voyage 200, TI-Nspire, Casio Prizm, fx-9860G, fx-9750G, fx-9850G, Casio, calculator, ASM, BASIC, C, ARM, z80, 68k, assembly, Ndless, axe parser, calc, RPG, action, adventure, game, metroid, reuben, quest, zelda, final fantasy, reign of legends, Illusiat, mario, music, techno, trance, eurodance, hardcore, rave, club, nitacku, dj, netham45, anime, key factoring, hacking, cracking, game boy, gameboy, color, GB, GBC, emulator, TI-Boy SE, TI-Boy, gbc4nspire"/>

Some others might be questionable, too. For example Reuben and Quest should probably be combined together, then if too many keywords isn't an issue then gpSP-Nspire, TI-Nspire CX, HP Prime, nLaunch, DJ Omnimaga, xLIB, fx-cg10, fx-cg20, TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition could be added, for example. Back in 2009 one of the top 10 most searched query was the 10 ways to die domin-a-dead thread.

lol bb010g, and hking I think my banner idea would only be used for a few months or a year anyway, due to the upcoming site upgrade, but it would still be nice if it was up to date with the HP Prime and more Omni-like material in the calc screens. :P

We just recently changed our banner, don't see a need to change it again.

True, but the new one I just posted only adds a few elements rather than changing entirely, plus the lack of an HP Prime in the banner might make some people think we only talk about Casio/TI on Omni. The minor changes I just posted were just to make the banner more true to Omnimaga and up to date to the recent calc releases . (Hence why I put Pacman, Bust A Move and Supersonic Ball title screen in the color calcs

I agree with your mods suggestion! Besides, the TI-Boy SE is a bit out of context, IMO. ;)

Oh ok. How long is/was it supposed to last? D:

That reminds me, if the v6 theme returns, what would be nice is if it added the HP Prime idea to the banner like I posted recently and used v5 background instead. v6 background looks smoother, but it takes almost 1 MB. >.<
