Get your sharpeners ready because I've decided to hold a weekly "Axe Talk". It will be held in #omnimaga IRC and it will be an opportunity to ask questions, give suggestions, get help, debug, and other little things like that. I will also be using the opportunity to get a feeling about what my priorities should be during development, get opinions about changes I plan to make, and what direction I should take the project in general. I might also have some demos, screen shots, and even special beta versions for testing.
While I am unsure of what the permanent date and time will be, right now I am making the first one on Wednesday Aug 4th 9:00 PM PST. Yes, I know that's tomorrow/today, sorry for the short notice. I think the majority of the members here are from the US/Canada so I tried to pick a time when most people won't be busy with work/school but at the same time not unreasonably late.
In the US/Canada, that's:
8:00 PM Alaska Time
9:00 PM Pacific Time
10:00 PM Mountain Time
11:00 PM Central Time
12:00 (Midnight) Eastern Time
I'll probably be in there a little before 9:00 PST (my time zone) and then I'll try to stay as long as there's things to talk about. I may also consider holding it twice a week if its successful enough.
Hope to see everyone there :).

Mhmm, sounds like a cool idea, it should help having some real-time Axe discussion about features and stuff. 9 PM seems ok for now, but when school starts, I think it might be best to do them one hour earlier, maybe two in the worst cases, because several of our users are on the East Coast and are still living at their parents' home, meaning they are restricted in their bedtime hours. By 9 PM of your time, several people may be already sleeping over here. I guess what you could do is start checking the IRC logs when Late August arrives and if you notice that around 8 PM of your time, there's barely any activity, then maybe make those earlier for the days where there is school. Generally on Fridays and Saturdays, activity remains high late in the night, though.

Nice idea, I'll be working tonite, but I should be able to catch next weeks (as I will be on vacation).
*Edit* Just thought I'd mention that I'm east coast too(midnight bracket) but time would not be an issue for me. Perhaps if interested, people should post what time zone they are in. They can also post how/if it would affect them, so you can have a better idea of when your audience will be available.
-
i like the idea. i'd rather have it earlier as for me this means they'll be held at midnight, but i'll try to catch them when i can.
-
Indeed. This sounds really awesome.
OH! Can we make a banner for it!? :D
-
yeah, can we seriously do it earlier? It would have to be 2 hours earlier for me to even watch it in the summer. 3 for during the school year. Of course, that would be 6:00 for you, so that's not good.
So, any ideas for a better time? like 7:00 PM PST?
-
I'd need it to be earlier as well (maybe 6:00 PM PST ?). Regardless, it sounds really cool! ;D
-
timewould be an issue so if you could post all the doings on the irc at that time, it would be amazing!
-
Well, 9:00pm sounds good to me, but some other people might have some problems because of other timezones. Maybe we can have a poll or something to find out the timezones people are in or just when people are available to participate.
-
Yeah, the regular talks will be an hour or two earlier, this was just a spur of the moment thing because I'm planning to release 0.4.2 tomorrow and I wanted to have this before then so I'd have time to change things. But assuming its some time in the evening, what I'm more concerned about is the day of the week. Are there any days I should *not* make it? Are weekdays better than weekends or vise-versa?
-
Well, for me, in the Summer, weekdays are better, whereas weekends are better on school days. Althought I'm still available weekends during Summer.
But my schedule is kinda awkward, so you might want to hear more of other people's opinions first. I should be able to fit the time into my schedule. ;)
-
i'd rather the talks be on friday or saturday. tuesday's best besides that.
-
friday, wednesday, or saturday would be best. Personally, I would do friday. You are releasing 4.2 tomorrow?
-
Seems like weekend might be a good idea. The main issue is that in general, people have overprotective parents in terms of sleep hours. It reminds me when my mom wanted me to go to bed at 10 PM x.x (I always ended up falling asleep around 2 AM)
EDIT: ALso when school starts, avoid Friday from 2 PM to 9 PM of your time. From experience on this board, there's almost nobody on forums and IRC at that time (probably because it's the best time to hang out with friends for most people). Even when we started having epic activity in March, we still had like 3 posts some Friday evenings (of my time)
-
as long as we can have a log of the irc during that talk hours, i think everyone should at least be satisfied.
-
Yeah, the time is absolutely awful for me (eastern coast here). However, I guess I could always check the logs if making it earlier is too difficult.
-
Oh yeah, I was thinking of doing this again either Wed. or Thurs. except 2 hours earlier this time so that more people can participate. Is anyone interested? Which day would be better?
-
i won't ever be able to do it, but could you post the logs on the first post?
-
wednesday works best for me.
-
Wednesday's better for me too.
-
Wednesday seems quite fine actually. 2 hours earlier too, since wednesday nights seems quieter for some reasons.
@Happybobjr, last Axe talk logs are located at http://netham45.org/irc/EfNet/view.php?log=omnimaga.20100804 . Tomorrow should be http://netham45.org/irc/EfNet/view.php?log=omnimaga.20100811 near the bottom too. The later file doesn't exist yet, it's updated real time, but OmnomIRC logs are off by 2 hours from the forums.
-
Okay then, it will be Wednesday (tomorrow) at these updated times:
6:00 PM Alaska Time
7:00 PM Pacific Time
8:00 PM Mountain Time
9:00 PM Central Time
10:00 PM Eastern Time
-
Sounds like a plan :) I hope i can make it! I wanna participate!
-
Cool, I'll try my best! :D
-
i might make it :D
