Title: I'm having trouble putting Axe onto my calculator.
Post by: vanchagreen on July 28, 2010, 03:51:52 pm
Hello, everyone. Like the subject says, I'm having trouble putting the Axe Parser onto my calc. I'm using TI Connect's Device Explorer on a Mac, with a TI84+ Silver Edition. When I send the file Axe.8xk from the Axe0.4.1.zip it looks as if it works, says there's an operation running, no error messages etc. However, it doesn't seem to be on the calc. Am I doing something wrong?

Has it worked before with previous versions of Axe?  Also, another thing to try, maybe resign the app with the app signing tool included with the parser (although that's a windows program) and see if it sends after that.  I know the date fields are different and I hope that isn't the reason why its not sending.  I had another mac user also mention this problem.

Yes. I finally got it to work by sending via windows.  I also asked Ti-cares about this, although they didn't even read the bug report and set an e-mail asking for information that I had already provided.  So far, I think the software is just buggy.  If you have a windows computer, you can send it via that.

@Quigibo: This is my first time using (or trying to use) Axe.

I do have a Windows I can send it with... if I can get the stupid computer to work.

Should I try a previous version, just to see if I it works with the Mac?

It will work with mac.  But to make sure, send the one page. (One of the 0.3.x versions) onto the calc.  Also, can you post mac version and ti-connect version please.  I'm trying to diagnose the problem.

Thanks!

I think i know whats wrong.  Extract axe.8xk  0.4.1 to your desktop then to your calc. I used to have a problem (windows) where ti-connect would not allow you to send anything in a zipped file.

You can't even access the files on Mac without unzipping it first, and the problems are completely unrelated.  Also, this a Mac only problem.  It works fine under windows.

@graphmastur: I transferred Axe 0.3.3 and it worked fine. I am using TI Connect Version 1.8 (1) for the Mac. I have Mac OSX 10.6.3
@happybobjr: I extracted the folder to the desktop before trying to send it the first time. I also tried it when the file itself is on the desktop, and it didn't work.

When I sent the 0.3.3 version over, my calculator showed some steps: a garbage collect, sending "screen", and finally a message to tell me its done. When I try to send the 0.4.1 version this does not happen. The TI-Connect screen on the computer was the same both times.

PS. On an unrelated note, when I was deleting Axe0.3.3 from my calc, it worked fine, it said it was "defragmenting...". Does anyone know what that means?

Garbage collect, except for apps

Ah, ok, thanks.

Okay, That means that TI-connect is at least working.  You should be able to send the file via windows.

Also, If you send 0.3.3 back to your calc, and try to send it again, it will ask if you want to delete the previous version.  I am looking into it as we speak, though.

Would this issue be solvable, btw? Or is it going to happen with every future versions of Axe?
/me notices more and more Mac users lately and wishes TI updated their tool more.

Btw welcome here Vanchagreen :)

I'm not exactly sure. It works with windows, so I wouldn't think it would be quigibo's fault, but there still exists that possibility. Also ti-cares completely ignored my bug report. They just sent a standard response as always.  Anyway, I am thinking it's the Mac ti connect which is causing problems.

I could find more, but I can't seem to find a free USB logger for Mac to see exactly what it is doing.

It would be nice to see something like TiLP but for mac. Sadly, many Windows and Linux users are anti-Mac, though, and since the amount of Mac OS users is much smaller than Windows/Linux in the community (mostly due to the price of Mac computers, being out of reach from most students I think), it seems that few people are interested in making any calc tools for Mac.

TI-Connect for Mac's pretty advanced, though (it has a lot more features than the Windows version, and group files at least work :P). Don't know anything about this, though...

Yeah, doesn't it actually have a TI-Basic program editor?

I really don't get why that's only part of the Mac version.

Program editor, data editor (for 89s), list editor, real number initializer, you name it. There are functions to make every variable for ever graphing calculator TI ever released in the past 15 years or so.

That's why I was so confused when I tried TI-Connect for Windows...

Yeah TI-Connect for Windows had an editor in 1.5, but it was removed for some reasons, along with TI Group Explorer and that stuff.

Of course, TI-connect is lacking on the mac side, as you can't right click > send to device.  You also can't view pics.

I still remember using TI-Graph Link on Mac. It was a long while ago. Sadly it seemed to require a different kind of serial cable, though, so I couldn't get it to work with my black link.

Group explorer isn't necessary anymore, I think, since you can just view them in Windows Explorer just like you do .zip files.
Edit: 768th post!

By the way, I've found the source of this problem and all future versions of Axe should be Mac TI-Connect compatible.

I have no idea, but I changed the date stamp from 1999 to 2010 and it works now.

Wow weird O.o

That tells how much quality TI-Connect is x.x

It probably thought that it was a paid app, in which case, a date in 1999 would mean the app had expired, whereas a date of 2010 would possibly leave some time to still play it.  However, I think it will only check the year or something, as the date seems to be January 8, 2010.  Changing it to 2009 would still allow it to send, so I don't really know.

Mhmm, weird. I remember some other users had this issue too. In my case, I just made apps open with TI-SendTo application located in the TI-Connect folder, so when I double-click an app, it automatically acts as if I right clicked it then sent to TI device.

As for the APP issue, I guess it was most likely due to the validation failing due to the date, as Graph said.
