Title: Deus Ex Mortalis
Post by: Liazon on December 20, 2005, 05:15:00 pm
After reading about how people had issues with porting games (such as 3FG's SSP, tenniskid's The Chosen One)  I'd like to get my title and story out into the open before anybody starts wanting to pursue legal action.

Since I've joined the TI Community, my goal has always been to make a calculator RPG.  So far, I have not done that.  Instead, I only have tons of small useless programs that do very little.  During the past two months of learning ASM and C, and getting pounded by tons of homework, I've been coming up with a story and title for the project that I'd like to leave behind in the community.  So I've finally come up with this:

Deus Ex Mortalis (latin for God in mortal man)
It's an RPG about the main character who is psion with various psionic powers.  And he's a rebel.  For now, that's all I'd like to reveal about the story until somebody finds a work with a similar name.  So far, I've only found a short film on google with the same title, but it seems that it was somebody's school project.  I'm just afraid of working too hard on the story and finding out I have to change it to avoid legal actions.

Now here's the trilogy part to it:
At the moment, I have 3 different versions of the game (mostly just title screens at the moment).  One is in Ti-89 Basic (DEM), one is in Ti-83+ ASM (DEMD), and one is in 68k C (DEMZ).  I've decided that they should all have a different storyline, but the same basic plot.  Most likely, RPG elements will vary depending upon the language I'm using and the ease of implementing them.

Major ROADBLOCKS:
1.)  I barely have time during school.  Right now, I usually just program DEM during some classes.  The C and ASM versions I pick up occasionally.
2.)  I'm still in the learning process of learning 89-Basic, 83+ASM, and 68k C.
3.)  I have never made anything on such a massive scale before.

FORTUNATELY:
1.)  If I am dedicated as I think I am, I'll continue working on it through college just to get them done.
2.)  I feel that I must leave something behind in the Ti-Community to thank everyone who has been kindn enough to offer meadvice and teach me programming.

So basically, I wanted to put this out just in case the idea was already taken.  If not, I claim the title as my own until I see it an impossible task.

Sounds very good, if you need any help with frontend stuff (sprites, more storyline stuff, ect.) just give a holler.  I don't think anyone else has this idea, although it is a little like Deux Ex: The Invisible War, but not enough to cause a lawsuit I don't think.

You look like you should be ok with that name.  I googled it and it didn't come up with anything big.  Good luck on the project.  It sounds really sweet.

sound pretty cool, if no commercial games are called like this I think you shouldnt have any problem with that name, which is cool btw. And if you need help feel free to ask, altough I dont know ASM and C

and one advice: work on one thing at a time, like start with map engine, then once done do the battle engine, then the menu, etc. Also write down your ideas on paper, like every story event, every game side quest, maps, etc. Thats what I did with all reign of legends games and reuben quest games :)smile.gif

DEM (89 Basic): Took the 10 minutes after a chem quiz to make a title screen on the Program I/O screen. Figured out a way to select files and store data accordingly for 3 save files (probably could have more but why would you need more?).

How do I take (animated) screen shots of an 89 Basic program?

NOTE:  This may be the only update you may get for a VERY VERY LONG TIME.

This is really funny...

I have no idea how to get any calc related stuff to work on the new computer.  I'm totally unfamiliar with Windows XP.

Getting my assembler and linker to work , recognizing .z80 files, installing TIGCC and Ti-Graphlink. and Ti Connect.

At least the old computer works, but it's no longer connected to the internet.

updates: still making tile mappers for all 3 versions. In all 3 different languages.

edit: my old comp was windows 98.

the organization of XP seems really foreign to me that's all.  i can't seem to navigate through all the files on the comp very well.

or adjust settings.

yea, it is really wierd

to make a new file type (for getting the .z80 files) you need to click tools, and then folder options...I forget exactly how to fill it out

Just read the first couple pages of Asm in 28 days is says how to set it up.

Double click on the .z80 file and tell it to open with Notepad (or whatever you use) all the time to read the files. GraphLink isn't needed (unless you use older cables). I'll post a list of programs I have that I use for programming.

Well, I got TIGCC installed on new comp!!!!

Still haven't gotten any ASM to compile yet.  No time with exams and all.

I'm sorry to say, that DEM 83+ is dead.  It will be revived after I make my first 83+ ASM project.

DEM 89 will live on as soon as I learn more C!!!!  I'm only part way through technoplaza tutorials!!!!  Oh ya, no basic version.

edit:  Any sprite requests I made: they weren't for DEM 83+ btw.

edit again:

BAD NEWS:  Millions of years for anything to assemble for 83+.  Old comp took seconds.  Still can't get anything to compile on new comp.

GOOD NEWS:  TIGCC compiles 10x faster than on old comp!! Hooray!!!

another edit:  VahnRPG was able to help me get the compiler working again.  Like with TIGCC, it compiles much faster than on my old computer!

even more edit:

user posted image

first sprites! they are 24 width 25 height.  Is that too big for and 89?

I know they came from project charas.  oops I forgot to mention that.

Right now I'm making a difficult decision between using the medium character build or the little character build.

medium build produces 24 width x 25 height sprites.  might be able to shave it down to 16 width depending on clothing choice.

little build produces 16 width x 20 height sprites.  But there aren't that many premade options, so a lot of the extra clothing and items I'll have to draw myself.

Fortunately, both will tile the screen very well, it's just a matter of speed, that's all.

note:  I'm the type of person who needs to start making good sprites before I can start coding anything else.  It demoralizes me whenever someone makes good comments on gameplay, and bad comments on my graphics.  *points to Turkey Hunt http://www.geocities.com/calcul831415

edit:  I think if I shaved off this guy's wings, he'd be 16 width, 25 height.  Maybe I should do that?

I don't think it really matters how big the size is on the 89, they have more pixels so it would look more detail if you add a few.

Well, I'm now proposing a really radical combat system.  It will use the passive advancement that I've been planning all along, but it will feature KOTOR like fighting.  keyword: "like."

More details later.

edit:

@Radical Pi and Dragon__Lance:

I'm kinda just making sprites at the moment while I'm learning C, which still confuses me a lot.

I will make an 83+ strategy game/RPG, but it won't be DEM.  Actually, right now I'm doing more work on that game, then on actually coding a tilemapper for DEM 89 (which should probably be my priority actually.)  Only issue is that I'm having issues with displaying VERY LARGE MASKED GREYSCALE sprites on the 83+.  And I have not made sprites for the 83+ game  :Dbiggrin.gif:Dbiggrin.gif:Dbiggrin.gif

Why is it that the projects I want to work on are the ones that are not going so well, and the ones I'm not working on the ones that make some unusual form of progress?

Still, trying to figure out which keypress form to use.  Speed is a big necessity, but ironically, graphics are not the speed critical section, just keypress.

edit: for some odd reason, the 83+ game has caught up in progress.  eh, who knows, I might just have to release DEM and the 83+ game at the same time.  Hopefully it will be an acceptable first project. Considering what I've already learned, and the two languages I'm using, it'd be sad if I couldn't deliver.

If DEM has to die, just put it on hold.

Almost a perfect example of me. Don't give up, just go slowly, like I am. Make some test programs to see if your overall programming concept is correct. I'm not sure what you can do, just do something. :Dbiggrin.gif

dont give up liazon, i know you can code, just start out small, maybe even a number guesiing game or a random insult generator program to help start up, have you considered trying this?

this is a whole lot easier than TI-89 BASIC.

Thanks Radical Pi, but I don't know if I ever want to pick up z80 or 68k ever again.  I'll just have to see how things turn out.  I wish best of luck to everyone else on finishing their projects!!!

I'm sure they will all turn out great, and eventually all of you will ascend to the level of respect that Kevin has earned throughout his career.  As for me, I don't plan to get there in the near future.  Forgive me for that.

edit: this title is MINE!!

Should I revive this game as:

a z80 ASM project:
I will have to learn z80 ASM AGAIN!!! and perhaps I'll never even get it started.  black and white or greyscale?

a 68k project:
I probably won't begin work until the summer or after I finish my first game.

Another thing, I think I might want to change the title now that I've thought over the story a bit more.

OR

Should I try to learn Java, enough to skip compsci and go straight into AP compsci and make a Java RPG when I have the time?

ultimately, this game WILL BE REVIVED!
Title: Deus Ex Mortalis
Post by: Radical Pi on March 14, 2006, 11:19:00 am
I'm still here. :)smile.gif

You could start it as a z80 project, finish that, port it to 68k, and by then you should be in AP CompSci learning Java with others,  but after that much programming you should be able to pick it up on your own.
Title: Deus Ex Mortalis
Post by: Liazon on March 14, 2006, 11:23:00 am
true, but I could always finish it as 68k, port it to z80 and then make a Java game.

the problem is I'm pressed for time.  Even in the summer, I'll probably have to work, do AP hw, and then see if I have time to program.  Hopefully I can finish this first game (not DEM) soon.  I bet you anything all of you can program a z80 version in 10 minutes while it takes me 10 weeks to finish. :)smile.gif
