Title: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 03, 2011, 07:08:27 am
As some of you might know I am busy on a game for the 89. It's supposed to be a 'Myst demo'. I am not planning to make the full game(all the ages,etc..) because that would be soo huge...
My plan is to make only the main myst-island, which you can explore.
Anyway I made a screenshot so you can have a little peep of how it's supposed to be.
Spoiler For Myst Gif:

EDIT:Myst 89 is finished( Not completely, but it was meant to be a demo). Above is old news so please ignore it :P

It looks pretty nice so far, especially for being in only black and white. =)

You don't want to know how much work he put in converting those picture in a acceptable form.
At one point he had to redo more than half because the freaky program he was using didn't save the changes.

I'd believe it. That's got to be a ton of pictures to convert for the full island.

That must be so much work 0u0
No wait that looks stupid

EDIT: This was meant to be an inside joke, not trolling or whatever. I tend to forget I'm not on the MSPAforums here.

Thanks art of camelot. It is a lot of work, but I have allready a big part converted. :)

I'm not saying it is slow, I just can't get how fast it is with the image :P But yeah speed is very important :D

Yeah, a version oncalc with beautiful graphics would be badass.

Also, lol Homestuck inside jokes. (Of course, this is not MSPAForums, not everyone here reads MSPA, although we have some huge fans here, so don't be surprised some people finds some of them offensive.)

I personally played it at school once. Teacher wanted us to play through the game but I forgot why actually. It was for a small school work or something. It was indeed a great looking game.
Title: Re: Myst 89

I tried to play Myst once, it was so hard x.x this is looking really nice though! :D
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 06, 2011, 03:06:54 pm
I played it on our ipod and I just fell in love with it. I couldn't wait for riven to come out for ios, so when it did I immediately downloaded it. They're both MARVELOUS games.

So I decided to give an attempt to make it for the 89.
(If I was your teacher I would also let you play the game, just because its so nice. :) )

EDIT: @builderboy: When I first played myst I didn't have a clue what the goal is because there isn't one given. Sadly I used hints. But when I finished myst I realized I should have tried more stuff out and not have used hints.
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 08, 2011, 03:52:31 am
First I was using a matrix to store all the coordinates and picture-names, but because this got to slow if it the row number was bigger than 100(or even less).
For example, If you type this in home:
Code: [Select]
matvar[1,1]And than you type this:
Code: [Select]
matvar[100,1]The last one takes longer to load. This could all together in my game make a delay up to 2 seconds after pressing enter(to go to another pic).
So my plan(actually Jim's plan) is to make all separate lists. This will go a lot faster.

Just saying this that you know I'm working on it.  ;)

Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 08, 2011, 03:53:45 am
Darn I didn't realize matrices were slower to read data from further in them. On the 84+ this happens with strings of like 1000 characters too.
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 08, 2011, 03:55:14 am
I didn't know it too, but I found out...
But happily it won't be to hard to convert my(not yet full) matrix to lists. :)
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 08, 2011, 04:01:06 am
I hope lists won't end up doing the same thing. X.x

For odd reasons I never noticed any matrix slow down on the 83+, but again maybe it's because it was 16x8 instead of like 128x1.
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 08, 2011, 04:21:02 am
My matrix would have about 300 rows and 35 collums.(finished) :D
But if all my lists are separate, I wouldn't see how I could getvthe same problem...
I will just try it out and see.
Also, maybe the 83 matrices and the 89 matrices work (totally) different.
Title: Re: Myst 89

Well, I don't have that calc. I only program for 68k calcs. Making myst for the 84+ would be very difficult because the screen has a lot less pixels than the ti 89. But If somebody would draw each picture by hand, not using the real pics, it might go... But that IS a lot of work, sadly enough.
But I have heard of Dj_O that 'Illusiat 5', a game that he made, is a short point and click adventure for your kind of calcs. And because Myst is also a point and click adventure you might like that game, but I myself didn't try it (Yet).
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 08, 2011, 06:26:54 pm
I think it could be possible to resize them and use grayscale, but in some cases it might not look good. Some would need to manually be converted and some stuff would be hard to see.

I think some pics could maybe even be kept at their original size, just cropped and modified a bit, because on 68K, a part of the screen is used by the TI-OS GUI, meaning the screen is like 77 pixels high and 160 wide. It could maybe use scrolling, although data would take a lot of space.

Maybe Casio Prizm? :P
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: coolrudski on March 08, 2011, 06:37:55 pm
this looks awesome! but will it have the rendering memory to do this, or even part of this? i mean at a certain point itd seem to be too much just graphics wise.... how do you plan to combat that?
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 08, 2011, 06:41:00 pm
Keep in mind the TI-89T has 2.7 MB of flash and that stuff can be run directly from archive. Myst is a graphical-intensive game, so it's obviously gonna be much larger than a tilemap-based game, but memory issues shouldn't be a big problem.
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 09, 2011, 03:37:26 am
I have a lot of files, but I think the whole island might just fit on it.
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 09, 2011, 03:57:51 am
That's good to hear. How large is a pic file by the way? (one that fills the whole TI-BASIC screen area)
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 09, 2011, 04:09:42 am
It's 1547 bytes. But the picture converter makes them for the whole screen(so including the os part). But I cant see that extra part in graph so I will cut off those part later. Like that a file(full screen) is 2007 bytes. Basicly all my pics are still 'uncut'. But when I cut the partsof by each pic I will have again some extra bytes free. ;)
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 09, 2011, 04:14:07 am
Oh that's nice. THis means you can fit about 1700 pics or something. :D
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 09, 2011, 04:25:49 am
Euh... I don't think so.
I think maximum 300 pics. I have on my calc about 250 pics at the moment.
This uses 452701 bytes  452701/2007=225,561
This is what sais on my calc. (All the pics are archived)
Ram free=180386
Flash rom free=159746
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 09, 2011, 04:27:52 am
Oh ok, I was thinking about the TI-89 Titanium archive, which is in the high 2 MBs or something. :P
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 09, 2011, 04:30:20 am
I see, well I still think i have enough bytes free to have the whole island on a ti 89. :D
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 15, 2011, 10:10:00 am
The lists work nicely :)
Basically the whole island is finished but I'm still missing a few pics, but I'll try to put them on my calc as fast as possible.
In-game-buttons don't work yet, but that a 'problem' for later ;D.
I must see still at some pics because they're quite unclear. :(
Maybe one of these day's I'll post a demo(I know that myst 89 will be a demo;only the one island, but you probably know what I mean, a demo where no in-game-buttons work)

But overall there's still quite some work ;)

Alright. Here's a demo-demo of myst 89.

Switches don't work in this demo.
Keys are f1 and arrows.

the myst series is amaze, and i really like the way you're making it look with nothing but monochrome.

as for an 84+SE version, i think scrolling screens would be the best way to go. in fact, the later games in the myst series used scrolling in that fashion to give the illusion of 3 dimensions.

for any of you potential fangirls out there, the myst book series is a wonderful thing, and MO:UL is now online and, what's more, FREE.

nice work, SB!

Thank you a lot!
Now I have to start making switches work... Hopefully that won't take too long.
Also other plans are to possibly make picture more clear and make that they are not missing important details that stick over the screen.

EDIT: If someone tried it on their calc, please tell me if you disliked something, and I'll see if I can do something about it. ;)

Actually you don't even need a ROM to emulate a TI-89, all you need to do is download the OS from TI website. Wabbit doesn't run 68K calcs, though, so he'll need TiEmu instead.

Title: Re: Myst 89

Tiemu is cross platform, you can run it on anything (ok, ok, you can't run in on a z80 calc).
Title: Re: Myst 89
Post by: Stefan Bauwens on March 24, 2011, 02:24:03 pm
It might be that  you can't send the group in one peace to tiemu/vti. It might give an error in the middle because the calc gives a popup:Warning!About to delete memory archive or something.
So it might be that you have to ungroup it first with this program:http://lpg.ticalc.org/prj_gfm/
In that case send it in parts, I got the error somewhere between img70 and img80.
If you ungrouped it, send first everything till img 70 to your emulator. Then send images, img71-img80 to your calc. When you got the error send the rest of the files to emulator. This should work.
I know this sound confusing. :(

I know I haven't updated news for quite some time. But I'm a little bit busy with other stuff. When I get on my calc when I have time I'll continue with it. So don't worry that it might be dead. Currently I only know ti-basic. When I finished Myst I might try looking into Newprog or so(You can consider it axe for 68k calcs). In myst there are some animations, but I'll try to not have any and still make it look good.

Well, it will be big, that's for sure but at least you'll have room on the 68ks

yeah, I've heard of newprog. Personally, from what I've read, though, it sounds more like xlib for 68k than Axe

As you might have figured out, I'm a slow programmer :P
But when I get on my calc, I really try to get something finished. It's just that I haven't got all that time to just sit behind my calc and program.

Recently I made the marker-switches work, but those aren't the only switches...
I am doubting if I'm going to make reading books work, because there are a bout 5 books, with a lot of text. So I think I'm gonna let them out. Ofcourse those people who really want to read those books can read them here: http://www.l7square.com/journals/framer.html (Real myst)
The books aren't important for this demo, since they are about the other ages, which won't be in this demo.

I'll try to make everything work, except the books that link to other ages. :)

Here's a list of all the things I (think) still have to do on Myst 89(I posted this list also on my website):

-Rocket, power to rocket-buttons....(This is basically finished)
-Tower Rotation/map/lift...(Basically finished)
-Code 'thing' in the fore chamber beside the dock
-'Time machine'
-Buttons on island(not marker-switches)
-Tree
-Hut, code, wheel...
-Clock, wheel...
-Brother books, colored papers...
-White paper
-Stove
-Boat/ little fountain thing...
-Paper of Power-to-rocket
-Link to the books out of the bookshelf
-Intro
-Finishing touches(clean up, readme, etc...)

Today I had some time, so I finished the Tower rotation and lift thing. :)

The thing is, that the 92 has less memory than the 89. Since Myst uses a huge amount of space, I doubt that it will fit on the 92.

Yippeedippydee!!
Myst 89 is finished!  8)

"Myst for the TI-89! This great adventure game is a point-and-click game. NOTE: Myst 89 is a demo because the whole game would impossibly fit on your calc. But don't worry. There'll be still enough fun in this game even though it's limited to the main island(meaning there are no extra ages) and some other things.
Myst is huge and really heavy on files, meaning you'll probably won't be able to have any other files on your calc, but I think it's worth it!
I did my best to make the great graphics great on calc. Wait no longer and try it out!
Don't forget to read the readme for IMPORTANT installation info and more."
I hope you like it!  :w00t:

Woah Stefan, that's looking awesome, finally very good job, +1!!

I won't try the game as I don't have a 68K calculator, but the screenshots look great, I also like the way you organized the second screenshot (lots of screenies packed together).

I checked the folder and well, as expected there are lots of images, but I guess that's a limit of Basic, but even though I think you did a very good job.

Oh and the art/graphics look good, nice images there :D

I'm proud of him, he has done a very very good job!

@Stefan, I think this deserves a new thread :)

New thread? The thread should be the same forever (updates and stuff). What you can recommend though is a News post made by an admin, I'll request that right away.

Thanks a lot! You probably noticed that I was these last days not so active on Omnimaga. Well I was busy with Myst ;)
I already uploaded to Ticalc, Omnimaga and I' going to upload it on Tifreakware.

Actually that zip(including itself) is existing out of 665 files. :P

I was thinking.....Are there any compression utilities for the 89? If you had a basic asm prog that compressed the images, and decompressed them when used, you could probably fit a whole lot more of the game in.

This is awesome.

As I said, well-deserved feature :) It's amazing what you did in pure BASIC.

You could have each age be a separate part of the program (load one on your calc at a time)
The opening sequence, like from the beginning to where you start actually playing, is so amazing. It gave me some very warm childhood memories. My dad and I used to play Myst a lot when I was little. I just liked the visuals.

Well, I know. It's just it's a lot of work. But maybeee I'll ever do it.
Glad you liked it. :)

@DT I doubt the 68k community will ever grow very much, since the audience for getting the calcs is significantly lower, and the interest in programming by then is decreased.

Does the game end?

Well, my demo can be played nonstop. There's never a 'Congratulations' screen. Actually the original myst can be played after you 'won'. You can continue walking around and enjoy the views. :)

In case people end up forgetting they saw a part already, wouldn't it be better to let them know when they finished the game in case? :P

I guess it's fine either way, though. That game is pretty great.

Well, it's pretty difficult to give an ending. At the end of the original game you also end back up on the main island and may walk around. I do say when you found a clue that normally would do something more(but doesn't because of the demo) that it normally would.

Thanks by the way.

Ah ok. I never finished the original game so I don't know X.x. I was sure it ended like most other games.

A small update: Myst 89 can now work (properly) on the Voyage 200(and TI-92+ I presume) with this update downloadable here: www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/453/45337.html

The main thing this does is fixes the Text errors you get when reading a letter/book/message.(This is due to the fact that text font is smaller on the TI-89.
