Title: Dual Layers
Post by: MRide on August 08, 2010, 11:08:35 am
I'm looking for good combinations of characters to create cool looking text sprites.  The method for displaying these is: display text on graph screen, store pic, display other text at same location, recall pic.

for an example, look here (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/401/40108.html).

Ones I've come up with are:

Finance N with O
X with ^, makes cool "person-looking" character
H with capital i

there are others, but I can't remember right now.  If you know any good ones, post them!

There are some more intense ones out there.  Weregoose has some, if I recall correctly.

Oh, you're talking about Dual-Layers. This (http://ourl.ca/4377/82171) might be of some use. Trevmeister66 made a dual layer generator a while ago and then I recreated it to include all of the tokens (and made one with his original tokens that is smaller than his). Could be useful.

Yeah, you just have to use storepic/recallpic to get the second layer.

You can use this small java applet that i wrote to find character combinations to generate any pattern you want!

You start the applet and fill in the grid with the pixels you want, then press the search button to search for possible combinations.  Possiblee combinations are shown in order of how close they are to your original drawing, but will try to find other combinations that look similar to your specifications too.  You can also click the 'shifted' option to switch to duel layer 'offset' sprites.

Thanks.  These really helped.  Now I'm off to find the best-looking ones and begin planning for a RPG.

Hmm.... in the chart in Raylin's post, on the sloped side of the triangle, near the bottom, in between the small two and three (right before the colon) is a little box.  Is this character printable?  I can't find it anywhere.

That is the plot style mark box.
[2nd]+[Y=] under MARK.

That box is different its in the middle of the space.  the one I'm talking about is at the top.  If you look closely in the chart, you can see the difference.

Ya, the box you're talking about is the solid one right? I don't think it's accessible anymore. It used to be though because I believe DJ used it in one of the Illusiats or something like that.

No.  It looks the one Raylin mentioned, but its at the top of the sprite, and not in the middle.
It's near the colon on the chart.  Down on the sloped side.

EDIT: here's what it looks like

Ah ok. Ya, then that is the Stat-Plot square. I thought you were talking about the squares that are at like the bottom point of the triangle.

Ya, now I'm quite confused. I have no idea what token that is now unless it is the degree sign. But it looks like a square ???

Me too.  I found it using Builderboy's java program (which is awesome, btw) but I couldn't find it on calc.

So, dual-layers....has anyone made one of those huge and awesome charts for shifted dual-layers?

Ya. I mean didn't you say you were the first, that you know of, to use them, or at least like you did?

If you want one though I would talk to Weregoose, isn't he the one who made the other?

I dont know of any other games to use them, so if im not the first i dont know who is ^^ And yeah, i think Weregoose was the one who made the other, maybe you could ask him

Yeah I don,t like large charts either. So many combinations that you get lost x.x

Also I think Builderboy was the first to make a shifted dual-layer ASCII game. (and did a nice job so far)
