Quick question regarding TI-nspire CX
« on: September 09, 2014, 08:17:02 am »
Greetings all,

Apologies if this is a noobish question however I've just recently purchased a TI-nspire CX and desperately need the Computer Algebra System Functionality.

I have purchased the calculator second hand (The last 7 digits of the serial number at the back of the calculator are: P-0511b.

The current software version on the device, (I presume stock) is Version 3.9.0.463 as defined under "Handheld Status".

After doing a little bit of research, it appears as if there is no hardware limitation for use of CAS features implemented in the TI-nspire CAS.

It is my understanding that the boot2 can be modified in order to unleash the CAS features on the CX device.

Does anyone know how I can go about doing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks!

Since it's a B (2011) hardware revision, it isn't as restricted as hardware J and higher and it probably came with OS 3.0.1, so the previous owner probably upgraded it before selling it. I believe there is a way to downgrade from OS 3.9 on older models, but I think the minimum is OS 3.6, according to this post https://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15163&p=169442&hilit=downgrade+os+3.9#p169442 and I forgot how it is possible to downgrade from OS 3.9 to that OS, let alone a CAS OS.

Otherwise the other alternative is to use KhiCAS.

Thanks for that DJ Omnimaga,

I am struggling to find some instructions that are in English for running KhiCAS (I have Googled extensively).

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated :D.

Many Thanks again,

Thanks for all your help.

I have soldered up a TTL connection, does anyone know where I can find the 3.6 ROM I have looked everywhere!

I will probably need to re-flash the boot2 loader in order to get the 3.6 OS to work? Is this lurking around anywhere.

Thanks DJ,

I have now successfully downgraded the boot2 image!

The current version I'm using is 3.10.16.

However, when I attempt to install OS 3.6 I get this error with "TI-Nspire Computer Link Software"

"You cannot install a version of the OS that is older than the currently installed version."

I'm not sure how the software knows what the current version of the old software was but is there away around it?

I think you are running os 3.1. In that case, you can install ndless 3.1 instead of ndless 3.6, which is much more stable and doesn't need to be reinstalled. Then just follow the instructions to install KhiCas

He was not running OS 3.1, he came from 3.9 and downgraded to 3.6.
And since he uses nlaunchy, Ndless doesn't need to be reinstalled.

However, if the goal is to have the CAS, it's true that it can be a good idea to install 3.1 (you can put a 3.1 CAS OS on a non-CAS CX but you can't with the 3.6).
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE
Sorry if I answer with something that seems unrelated, English is not my primary language and I might not have understood well. Sorry if I make English mistakes too.

Yeah from what I remember, CAS on non-CAS didn't work except with OS 3.1, although I wasn't sure anymore. Nspire support tend to be sparse on Omni nowadays for some reasons, but I guess TI doesn't help much by alienating the TI-Nspire fanbase with lockdowns that requires dangerous manipulations to circumvent for inexperienced users.

Hi Hayleia,

I have now successfully downgraded to OS 3.1.

I am still in the process of learning what can be done with the TI-nspire CX. So far I have managed to play Doom haha.

Thanks for everyone's help.
