Title: nPal - an RPG for nspire - now fully translated!(RC1)
Post by: zweb on July 28, 2013, 05:41:39 am
My English is poor, sorry about it,I hope you will like this game.

This is a port of a Chinese RPG called Legend of Sword and Fairy. Now all conversations have been translated into English.
The Legend of Sword and Fairy (simplified Chinese: 仙剑奇侠传), is an action RPG developed by Taiwan's Softstar Entertainment. Set in ancient China, the game is based on the Wuxia genre with elements of fantasy. With the first of the series released in 1995, the game became one of the most successful video game franchises in both Taiwan and mainland China.
Because of its huge size (about 24MB),now you can only play it on Nspire CX series. :(

Installation guide:
1\Download the resource pack
2\Choose your language specific pack
3\Extract them into a folder called 'nPal'
4\Copy this folder into your nspire
5\Click sdlpal.tns and enjoy~

If this game can't be started, just reset and try again.
If you see surface bilt error, just press continue.

Keymap:
Menu and Esc:Game menu
Enter and Space:Next
r:Repeat
a:Auto
d:Defend
e:Use Item
w:Throw Item
q:Flee
a:Status
f and 5:Force
p:Save Screenshot(Can be opened in mviewer)

The graphics are impressive for an nspire game! :)
The menus aren't translated, though, only the dialogues...

Hmm I don't have time to try this right now, but can someone post a screenshot?

The graphics are indeed pretty damn impressive. The dialogs seem a bit weirdly placed but I guess it's alright. Strangely my assumption for the quit menu item was correct ^^ Anyway, good job at translating this (or at least the dialogs), I hope you plan on translating more :)

It's actually the first one IIRC. ElementCoder linked to the TI Planet article with screenies. ;)

I'm really glad to see this translated. And yeah this is the first graphical RPG ever for the Nspire (there was another project by reo but he disappeared), the only other ones being GBA ROMs playable via the emulator. That said 68K calcs got the same problem even when they were popular, because there are like 1 or 2 completed ASM/C RPG for the flash models and a dozen BASIC ones that are kinda good (on the Nspire you can barely do anything in BASIC compared to other models).

Anyway nice work and thanks :D

I can't seem to get it to run. Even after rebooting the calc, the screen still quickly flashes to black then immediately exits. I don't even see any graphics.

Do I need one version of Ndless in particular?

You're probably missing a file. Oh, and I think the folder nPal has to be directly in MyDocuments, not a subfolder.

It's actually in My Documents and I upgraded to the latest Ndless version. Still no luck. I also made sure to download every file to my calc, in My Documents/nPad/ including the 3 parts plus English, and it still doesn't work.

By the way I use a TI-Nspire CX running OS 3.1.392 and Ndless v3.1 r848 (the one in TI-Planet tutorial).

Maybe I have a different TI-Nspire CX hardware, much like what happened to the TI-84 Plus with the missing RAM pages fiasco? My hardware revision is P-0411B btw. I have 73.2 MB left out of 115.2.

EDIT Ok it works now! For some reasons rebooting never worked, but after installing the latest Ndless version and still having no luck running the game, I rebooted once again and now it launched. So far it appears to work.

As for the game it looks pretty great! Good job so far! :D, it reminds me of Super Mario RPG isometric maps. the only bugs I or other people found so far are:

1) There seems to be a little display bug causing my Nspire arrow cursor to remain displayed, although darkened, in the screen corner.
2) Text isn't aligned properly all the time, which can make it hard to follow convos. D: (Mentionned above)
3) Untranslated menus, but I assume that you will translate them too later.
4) Arrows/numbers moves in the wrong direction. For example, if I press left or 4, I move up-left and if I press down-right I move down-left. D: Also the 1, 3, 7 and 9 keys to move diagonally do nothing. D:

I have finished and uploaded RC1 version, these bugs should have been fixed :)

I tried out RC1 and it works great except I seem to infinitely go in certain directions. Sometimes when I go diagonally my character continues that way infinitely and won't let me stop. It does this for all directions. Maybe it's a just a feature?

I know that certain RPGs have dungeons where you are in some sort of alternate dimension or are held out by a mysterious force, so you end up going through an infinite path. Maybe it's why? It could be a bug, though. I'll try the new version as soon as I have more time. :)

Ok I finally tried the update and the text is fine now. However, the movement bug still remains and diagonal keypresses are completely broken:

-When pressing up or 8, you move up-right instead of up
-When pressing down or 2, you move down-left instead of down
-When pressing left or 4, you move up-left instead or left
-When pressing right or 6, you move down-right instead of right
-When pressing Up-right with the touchpad, you move Down-right instead
-When pressing Down-right, you move down-left instead
-When pressing down-left, you move up-left instead
-When pressing 1, 3, 7 or 9, although the char moves in the good direction, he will continue moving forever even if you release the key.

Also, it would be nice if you added a teacher/fast-exit key, so that we can instantly quit the game without saving from anywhere, even during dialogs/conversations/intro. Sometimes we might be in an extreme hurry and have to close the game immediately.

I've been playing this game a lot recently and I've come across a few bugs while playing, other than the movement bugs.

1. A lot of the time in conversation, instead of the text being displayed, it will display something another character said earlier (like it kept saying what the aunt said earlier or that your hands were full instead of the actual conversation).

2. After winning battles, the items you get from winning are terribly hard to see as they list on top of each other, disappear quickly, aren't all translated, and some are even in black text (I think that's just when you level up though or learn a move).
