Title: Protect your TI-Nspire files: nProtect and nHide
Post by: excale on November 01, 2013, 04:34:43 pm
Ever wanted to protect your Nspire from unwanted people?

Well, your already have zLock (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=3959) and Hide Manager (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=3847) (please refer to their topics for further informations about these programs).

None protect your Nspire completely.

Today, I'm presenting you two other tools which can help you protect your Nspire in two yet another different ways (of course, you need Ndless 3.1 to run them).

nProtect:
nProtect (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=17343) protect the file browser of the Nspire. Once installed, you will need to press the "magic" key(s) plus the regular key to access the file browser.

nHide:
More magic comes with this one. nHide (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=22388) helps you protect only a part of the filesystem.
By default, the Nspire you can only browse part of the filesystem (from /Documents).
Once installed, if you press the "magic" key(s) plus the regular key, you will access the full filesystem (from /), where you'll hide your secret documents. If you only press the regular key to access the file browser, you will be able to browse from /Documents, as before.

For full instructions, see the readme of each program.

The major flow of these two programs is that you need to either use the default magic key ("=") or ask me to compile a specific version for you with your very password (ask by PM).

So, here is a recap':

Any question? Ask here, I'll try to make this topic better.

Why not making the keys configurable ?

I have no idea how to easily make keys configurable, except spending 10 times the time I spent making these programs (which I don't have).

Oh OK but if it's open source and you have the SDK set up you could do it yourself ?

Lol at the Minecraft 2D part. But yeah nice stuff Excale. Hopefully this can help people who have "friends" who constantly steal their calcs and wipe the memory. :P

Luckily I have no need for such security so far, but who knows what one might encounter right? Nice programs.
@Streetwalker I guess so, the key/password must be set in the code somewhere right?

Every time we write a test at school we have to delete all of our files and show the empty folder to the teacher. With nHide and Hide Manager you can hide your own files, but not ndless itself.
Can you make it so that when you access the file system using the regular key you will browse a folder like /Documents/Documents. Only if you press the magic key you can access /Documents. Like nHide in reverse.
Someone who doesn't know of this magic key would think the calculator is totally empty.

(And no, I'm not planning to cheat during a test. I just want to keep all my applications, savegames and ndless)

Why can't the teacher just use exam mode ? Or enable it yourself.

That's what I end up doing most of the time, but it's quite inconvenient. It limits some functions, you always get a popup and you can't just turn it off afterwards.
Also for some reason we're not allowed to use Press-To-Test mode and the file browser shows when it's enabled.

How about you don't yell and instead of posting a reply and then a new topic pick one or the other. I will remove your separate topic as this was posted first.
