Title: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on September 11, 2010, 12:21:21 am
Well when i was playing around with the new graphing capabilities i just 'discovered', i decided to make something. and i succeeded. i made working health bars for TI-nspire games!!! hope to release my program soon but i really don't want other people to take my program, change it and say that they made it or invented. I REALLY don't want that to happen. So if this happens please help stop the guilty culprit and either remove the program or credit at least some to me.  Hope to continue experimenting

hmm.. i can't see the post by michael_lee...

Honestly, if you're that worried about someone taking it I would just keep it to yourself and just release your game. That way if someone makes one they have to do it themselves. I don't know if you are able to see Nspire source code though or something though.

But if something does happen of course we will try to help prevent it and catch it. Though, also, just because someone has a working one too doesn't necessarily mean they took it from you or something.

I am curious what it looks like though and such, good job on creating one.

Oh, erm, I had written a post which asked what a health bar is, but when I looked over it, it felt slightly insulting, so I deleted it.

On that note, what exactly do you mean by a health bar?  You mean like a health bar in a RPG with fighting characters and stuff, or something else?
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on September 11, 2010, 01:36:13 am
i mean a graphical health bar, yes like one in RPGS and strategy games. !!!

meishe 91 it is extremely easy to see source code. all you have to do is create a new page then menu -> 4 -> 9 -> 2 and open any program so that's why.

ill release screenshots instead though

Ok, I didn't know since I don't own a Nspire. Is it at all possible to lock programs and such like on the 83+/84+ series?
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on September 11, 2010, 01:41:39 am
not sure but they still will be able to look at the source code and highlight and copy the whole thing. so ill try and see...
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: meishe91 on September 11, 2010, 01:44:10 am
Well locking them means that you can't open the source code. So if that's possible only people who know what they are doing would be able to do it. But another thing about it is that they actually have to be able to find it in all the code.
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on September 11, 2010, 01:45:46 am
problem is they can just highlight the whole code and copy it (copy and paste) not available on an 84 or other calcs. I know this lock feature, it's on my Casio 9850GB+ however for the nspire...

it's different on the nspire. you can put heaps of programs on one single 'document' and 'save' the program to memory and then delete the whole program from screen (it is still in memory though) however opening it is just as easy as creating it
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: meishe91 on September 11, 2010, 01:50:17 am
Well I'm pretty sure Omnicalc or something grants the feature of copy and pasting, though I don't remember correctly. It's been awhile. But even if someone copy and pastes the whole source that means we can easily identify that it's your game that is being replicated. What I meant though is for someone to just copy the source code for the health bar that would mean that someone would have to search through all the code of the entire program, pinpoint it, then copy and paste it. So if you have a lot of code in that program it will be hard to find, in theory. Remember, I don't have a Nspire so I don't know what is possibly on it and what is not, or how easy some things are. Sorry.
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on September 11, 2010, 01:54:38 am
no problem. however right now i ONLY have the code for the health bar. nothing else. ill try and put lots of other stuff in. but keep this in mind: the whole game has to split up into little programs so they can just take one program and copy it. oh well. thanks for All your help
Title: Re: NEW DISCOVERY!!! Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!! YES!!!
Post by: meishe91 on September 11, 2010, 02:07:59 am
Well if it is possible to include it with other code so it is harder to find I would suggest doing that. That will keep it the safest. Good luck on more progress :)

The people capable of appropriately using your code are always the people who could code it themselves. Protecting your software makes little sense, if you think about it.

yes i know, but this - no one has done this before yet. hmm... i think ill release screenshots to show the health bar and wont release it until it's fully fledged into a game

Whatever you decide, its your choice.  If you really are worried about it, by all means its perfectly fine to wait for a release.  As it is i cant wait for a screenie :)

Sadly nothing can be done about program code theft. It rarely happens but the trick to prevent sad events is to release it on ticalc.org first. That way if someone steals the code and upload it there, you have an even better proof. But I wouldn't make so much a huge thing about code stealing here. It makes us look like we're all thieves or something and I do not like it much <.<

Plus, besides, on the 83+, it's even easier to edit code. You just press PRGM, select edit, then the program.

Also I recommend not abusing all-caps in topic titles.

That said, interesting stuff, though. Will you post the program soon?

How different is it coding for nspire versus coding in the TI-83/84?
Because if somebody made a health bar in TI-83/84, it seems to me like they could port it over to the nspire without too much difficulty, unless the two languages are really different...
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: fb39ca4 on September 11, 2010, 01:02:33 pm
They are similar syntax wise, but the nspire lacks getkey and all graphical functions.

What fb39 said below. I think it has to be done using some graphing functions. I am sure there's no Line()/Pxl-On() function on the like. Not even displaying text on the graph screen. The TI-Nspire BASIC programming capabilities, aside from memory and, in most cases, speed, are more limited than the TI-80 and TI-81.

For math programs, Nspire BASIC is fine (with the exception of dialog boxes, which I predict will be added soon).  As far as games go, as DJ said, there are no graphical functions.  Some Nspire BASIC programs use the geometry stuff to add graphics, but they can only be changed by a actual function/program in a calculator page(play one of the Nspire BASIC games on ticalc.org to get a better idea of what I mean).

So basically everything has to have some sort of mathematical equation?

So basically everything has to have some sort of mathematical equation?
Everything has to be explicitly run by the user on the homescreen.
We need our own BASIC interpreter.

Well I'm pretty sure Omnicalc or something grants the feature of copy and pasting, though I don't remember correctly.
I don't know about Omnicalc, but I know you can do it in DoorsCS7. :)  You can also do it with XLib/Celtic III/XCopy. :)

Omnicalc used to do copy/pasting but it was removed in version 1.1, because it was too buggy (caused 32-ish KB Y= variables to appear in the mem menu)

Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 12, 2010, 09:42:54 pm
YAY!

I'm not sure if I'll have time to try it soon, but one suggestion I have for your ticalc.org files is that you should include a readme. If you uploaded this program in Omnimaga downloads section it would require a documentation available either in a readme.txt or the file description, so people know how to use it and stuff. It's also recommended in general by people to include a readme when we release new programs.
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on October 17, 2010, 06:16:27 am
True, so you mean that i should copy some of the instructions inside the program into a txt file separately from the tns file?
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 17, 2010, 02:03:39 pm
Oh they are inside? I think they should be copied outside, though. Some people may want to see the instructions before downloading the file. I myself check readmes before installing a BASIC game. If the controls are stuff like "use arrows to navigate in menus" and no sign of map engine controls, I generally don't bother trying it.

Ok now on progress over the past day or so…
Unfortunately I have met a dead end with the health bars: I can’t make animating health bars. The pixels don’t refresh when I want to. My version 0.3 is turning out to be working even worse than before, I think ill make some small updates, then release it as my last version. This is the situation if I continue to build on with my current code. However, another TI-nspire BASIC programmer (not sure if he’s a member of Omnimaga) has emailed me recently saying that he created some health bars using a different way, I hope to confer with him over the next few days, and also ask if his method allows animating bars. Stay tuned!

Sorry to hear. Did you also try with loops or something or do they just not animate at all? And I hope that person joins eventually :D
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on October 21, 2010, 11:47:56 pm
yeah i tried For End For loops. i might have coded it a bit wrong trying again. even if it does get animating, it'll probably be really slow, (loading clock) and won't refresh properly

Ah ok, well good luck. I would like to see a TI-Nspire RPG with a certain minimum of graphics like your bars. THe TI-RPG game seemed impressive for the TI-Nspire but aside from the title screen it had no graphics :(, not even ASCII sprites like Rogue/Illusiat
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on October 22, 2010, 09:16:53 pm
Yes, im thinking of making a rpg with these health bars.
anyway i found new opportunities! and DISCOVERIES!
yesterday i took heed of apcalc's grey scale plotting. i found it line colour and it changed the colour of the pixel plots! this will be shown in my next release. how dumb am i! such a simple thing and i missed it! GREYSCALE is now possible!
also i may be able to animate bars using sliders! But i will have to change the variables first. i discovered that the graphical changing of the health bars was indirect (eg: a variable changing a variable) i will try and make a single variable connect directly to the pixel plots and animation might be possible
also i will ask the other person soon for his ideas....
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!

wait found it! http://ourl.ca/7351.new#new
it works.
ill try and upload a screenshot of the new version.
also opportunites with sliders.

wait apcalc's screenshot isnt working anymore

I think the 1and1 server RFG image uploader is hosted on has some downtimes nowadays. Once, I remember loading a page and Nemo's signature was massive. The script did not load completly and showed the entire image instead. Also sometimes stuff takes a while to load. It's far less bad than Imageshack/Photobucket, though.

I have discovered the features of spreadsheets and these may be used to directly 'update' the health bars when a variable is changed.

I can't wait for a screenshot. Maybe you will eventually manage to have the first fully animated Nspire RPG. I remember my TI-81 RPG getting featured because it was the first to support maps and have graphics on that platform.

Well, you're all in luck!!! Just 4 hours ago, i made the biggest discovery/achievement yet.
I not only managed to make the health bars reload much faster (in fact nearly instantaneously), but has opportunity for animating health bars!!! no more dialogue boxes where you type it in. Just drag the slider. A screenshot of this will be up really soon!!!

To MRide there are already graphical games for Nspire BASIC. I think what you mean is an animating graphical game. Hopefully ill be the first to provide that to you all. Stay tuned!!!

and Happy Halloween!!!

that's a good idea, i felt the previous topic i created about the 'secret' of the health bars wasn't really good.

ok here's the screenshot... it is still under heavy construction for v0.5 of health bar but the first bar at the top is fully configurable... live changes to the graphing pixels!!!!

It probably doesn't look as good as i intend it to be, when it is all tidied up ill post another screenshot

oops I was meant to demonstrate that in that motion picture, but i rushed it... ok it's coming...
here we are:
Yes you can change the value, on the slider you can just click on the value and type it in... or you can run the sub-program inside that i had in previous versions that allowed you to set the value. just check the screenshot first..

Ah nice, but can stuff such as CurrentHP + 100 -> CurrentHP automatically updates the bar? Also can we get rid of the Health(100) above the bar and the two numbers below, or is that stuff totally beyond Nspire BASIC capabilities?

Also how do you get Nspire screenshots to be this small? ??? For a 10 seconds screenshot at 5 FPS, CalcCapture produces a 4 MB file for me ???
Title: Re: RPG Style Health Bars for the TI-nspire!!!
Post by: Jonius7 on November 01, 2010, 01:43:40 am
For the current HP, i think it can... because the amount of health depends on a single variable (h) that can easily be changed. so when i am changing the slider or typing in the value it should update automatically.
And for your 2nd question you have mentioned this before and I can easily remove the text - just have the health bar only... (i can delete it or hide it, practically any shape or text can be hidden...)
Yes i was wondering why on the other emulator topic that i created (ages ago) why you said the screenshots were such large files. Ill post a screenshot of my settings on Calccapture and see what is happening...

I think it might be because I had 256 color selected. I'll have to try again with your settings.

Also thanks for the info on the HP bars. :)

Ah ok I see, glad you'll be around ^^. Welcome back by the way. :)

By the way what is the image uploader in your sig? Is it some sort of thing that gives you credits when we click the link? I was wondering why you had an image uploader link in your sig since we already have a semi-proprietary one (http://img.removedfromgame.com ) and a lot of people use Imageshack/Photobucket. Not that it is bad, but I was just curious.

Oh, I just put it there because I found it when i was using SRWare Iron Browser. When you upload it it gives you lots of options for putting it in forums, in html links and stuff. U can have a normal forum sig pic or a zoomable one and some other options and it gives you the code for all of them, ready to be copied and pasted in...

So just a standard link.

http://img.removedfromgame.com/ is pretty good too becuz it shows u the picture u uploaded.

Have to recreate that userbar...

Ah ok I see, sounds cool. ^^

The RFG uploader was mostly in response to Imageshack/Photobucket slow loading times. 1and1 is sometimes slow but generally not as bad as some other hosts.
