Erm, sorry if this is a stupid question, but what exactly is the Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator?

I mean, I know what it does, but is it some kind of calculator meme?

People seem (when I looked at the comments on ticalc) very excited by it, even though it seems very simple...

Yeah, something like that.  It was an example of what not to do.

Also, facepalm.

btw, asfter the first time I played Michael Vincent's ASM port of it, No matter what # I guessed, I couldn't get it.  Is that supposed to happen?

Lol it finally arrives on the TI-Nspire (and get featured).

The funny thing is that this game wouldn't even be possible in OS 1.7 or lower. It tells how bad the Nspire BASIC language is x.x.

Also WFRNG is an old running gag in the TI community. The TI-86 version (the original) was featured in July 2000 I think. It was meant to parody the lack of originality at ticalc.org and it has been referenced to for a while in the TI community, until the late 2008 collapse.

Haha true.

Also I am still waiting for the TI-85 Zshell port, as well as TI-81 ASM port :P

It's funny to see this is still going on after 10 years. Oh well, in some ways those jokes show to newer programmers they should maybe be more original.

Also I think this is the first time a non-ticalc.org staff gets featured in a fake news there. Even a member from the Omni forums :P

I'd also like to see a port to Flash. It'd be interesting to see how non-calc programmers would view something like that :D

One thing that sucks now is that the activity slump in the TI community that lasted from late 2007 to early 2009 on calc forums in general made it so the older users left faster than new users joined and new users were not transmitted the reasons for WFRNG existence, reasons that were transmitted from generation to generation (of calc programmers) over the years. As a result, today, almost all new TI users on ticalc.org won't get the joke anymore.

EDIT: On a side note, the quote in my sig spoiler is from comments on the 2004 WFRNG ASM port fake news. I think it was made up by the staff.

It's more a sarcastic shot at the people who flood ticalc archives with useless games and programs that were done many times before and it became some sort of meme over the time.

Congrats on the feature though.

I would go with TI-81, 82 and 85 I think. However, they have no RandInt() function, so...

I actually mentioned the OS, but still :P

And you can use int(N*rand, which functions closely to randInt( :)

Ported to Nspire C!
The package also contains a useful console routine, making it the first edition of the Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator that has a serious practical use :D

Not as much as its evolved form that was never released in 2004 and the other even more evolved program that wasn't released either. It was so powerful that it make someone's computer sentient ;D

seriously, not much of a game, and it gets featured in fake news on ticalc.org!!!!
(it's a simple number guessing game)
also i first thought it would generate real random numbers such as 25.4758476747 and 555.69876. That's what it indicated with the version number: v1.0000000069. Hmph.

Jhgenius01,

I think you are missing the point of the whole WFRNG thing.

The goal of this program was not to show programming skills. In fact, if you compare the original TI-86 version of this game, it's worse than any other TI-86 guessing game ever made and if you notice, the file description was purposely written in an exagerated form of n00bish'ness. The author who made the 2000 version was ticalc.org news editor at the time (and one of the best). He was well aware that the archives were flooded with tons of crappy games, games that were done over 200 times before, programs that doesn't work and useless ones. So why would a popular TI community contributor suddently release such a crappy game then? Well, here's the answer: it was purposely intended to rant about the low quality of ticalc archives and the lack of originality from programmers (especially TI-BASIC ones), but in a sarcastic way. WFRNG is simply a parody of all crappy games on ticalc.org. It's a joke, literally. Hence why it was featured in a fake news. News flash: none of those games were included in the POTY awards.

The whole WFRNG thing has been a running gag in the TI community for a decade now. Sadly, new members like you (no offense intended) don't get the joke anymore, because in 2008, the community lost many of its older programmers and barely got new ones, so when the community activity started to pick up again in late 2009 and new members joined, there was nobody to relay the joke. I admit that the old news about WFRNG were better, though. Also there are rarely fake news anymore so people are not used to them anymore. As for the two previous WFRNG articles, due to making even less sense, it was clear that ticalc.org was joking.

Here is the original WFRNG article from 2000: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/3/38/38229.html
The one about the TI-83+ ASM port, by the guy who wrote Omnicalc and several notable apps, and also was News editor for 5 years: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/11/115/115018.html
Go on the last comments page and you will probably see it was really meant as a joke (read the set of 6 comments posted in all-caps. If you can't find it, I have it quoted in my forum signature. Just click the Spoiler button.)

I am pretty sure nobody on this forum even find this program great, not even the ticalc news editors, nor myself, nor its authors/porters. All it is is a sarcastic joke, an old TI community meme (like rickroll and lolcats) and whenever there was an invasion of crappy files on ticalc.org, people did a reference to the WFRNG joke. I even planned a TI-81 and 85 port, at one point. Heck, maybe I should learn ASM and make the 85 port ZShell compatible. Magnus, the founder of ticalc.org, will probably have a good laugh! ;D Had Snake X not ported this game to the Nspire, I would probably have done so, at one point. :P

Now I hope that you understand the whole thing behind this. Omnimaga had its own similar jokes in the past. I got 7 featured games on ticalc.org, yet 4 years ago I wrote a grayscale number guessing game and convinced someone else to write a grayscale quadratic solver. :P Ticalc needs some humor sometimes, eh? Else it can become boring.

im so sorry, i feel like SUCH a fool. thiis makes a whole lot more sense now and i was wondering why there was such inconsistencies in the readme and the whole tone of the text, it seemed very jokingly. hmmm... actually it seems funny. and i thank you for giving me some ti history. Im so sorry i acted like such a fool.

also i definititely agree that the older news was much clearer in stating the parody, it EMphasised that it was the best program several times, much clearer, the newer news only talked about 'raising' the status of the nspire which gets confused with the fact that it was PORTED to the nspire. thanks again for clarifying the WFRNG. You are a legend!

No problem. The thing is that for those who haven't been around for a while, it can be a bit harder to distinguish ticalc.org jokes and the like from other news. THis usually lasts until April Fools day. I wanted to make sure no hard feelings were held towards the author and ticalc due to the joke being taken seriously (which happened once with the original, as someone didn't see the news)

Back in 2001-2003 I kept hearing about a so called WFRNG program and I knew it was a guessing game. However, there was an usual amount of references to it as well as jokes so I decided to search for it and this is when I saw it was featured in news and then I saw the fake news articles

Whoops, I missed that.

I could write a program version in 68k C (a port that I don't think we've had yet)... but I have no clue how to make a 68k OS.

One thing, though: you didn't leave the readme file and title intact D:

It's this file (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/347/34797.html) on ticalc.org.

It does actually "work". There are instructions to install it on a floppy disk but as a review said, it works on any bootable device. Use a program to write a disk image to the bootable device. It would, however, be a bad idea to install on your computer and replace your current OS... since it only consists of the WFRNG.

Yeah what TC01 said. Do not install as lone OS on your computer.

Yeah, plus the original program was made by a member of the ticalc.org staff for that very purpose :)

Anyway, a side question somewhat related to this (considering the dir the OS is in), I noticed that a lot of really useful stuff at ticalc.org is in the DOS folder. Do they all work in Windows?
