Title: [Axe] Source Seekers Battle (TI-83+ & up)
Post by: 123outerme on July 27, 2014, 03:35:45 pm
Thanks to Streetwalrus, I have decided to remake Source Seekers (http://www.omnimaga.org/ti-z80-calculator-projects/(to-be-named)-dungeon-crawlercollection-game/) in Axe. There will be many improvements and new features, so be sure to check it out! Some or most of these additions will also make their way into the BASIC version as well!
(Just so that everyone gets it... Battle Axe, since it's in Axe and it's called "Battle")
Regarding the platform range, it will stay 83+ unless I need a BASIC command only on the 84.

Spoiler For Planned Features:
Planned Features:

Faster Speed & Optimized Engine
The engine will be super smooth and will take up less space both on lines and in bytes. Source Seekers Battle will include much faster gameplay, which the original wasn't capable of!

Configurable Keys
Now, you will be able to bind any action to any key you want! Do you want to shoot your bow with "On"? Well, that can't happen. How about "5" instead?

More Levels and Secrets
More levels will be added after the main storyline, and there will be tons of secrets to discover. There may even be a tournament system after you beat the game!

More Overall Content
More enemies, puzzles, abilities, weapons and more coming soon! Enjoy everything from fighting spiky enemies to shooting a bow to teleporting around the screen!

Multiple Save Files
Now, you can save multiple games! Instead of starting over and losing your gear, why not just make a new save? If you make a new save, how are you to tell them apart?

Character Customization
That's right! Ever wanted to be a Pi symbol? Now you can! Ever wanted everyone to call you "Shorty"? No, me neither. But, you can do it anyway, now that you can name your characters and equip them with the finest gear and armor you've ever seen!

Larger Map Screens
Tired of the confines of one screen per level? Now, there can be multiple screens per level!

Good news overall, but why wouldn't it be 83+-compatible ?

It sounds like a nice first Axe project, can't wait to see what you come up with. I also don't think you'll have any trouble getting it to run on the 83+, i don't think you'll really need the extra speed.

I think that can happen, there is a keycode in axe for on. Forgot what it was though

And sorry, can't help with this one besides testing, I don't know much Axe (and BASIC)
EDIT: if it's 84+ and above, can't help.

getKey(41) is ON. Though getKey won't return 41 if ON is pressed.

Thanks for telling me, I haven't started axe yet but only read the manual.

Sorry, I was at music camp. I'm waiting to see how it runs or if I need a certain command for it to work, or something.

Excepting Full, there's nothing Axe provides that doesn't work on 83+s.

I was talking about a BASIC command, but thanks for telling me anyway, that will help!

I think only mathprint and classic and the timer commands for BASIC, but I doubt you need/use them in axe

Feel free to ask for animated screenshots (if I haven't forgotten how to use wabbitemu mac yet :P )

EDIT: 83+ that is

If you post a demo of what you've got, anyone can take a screenshot for you. But if you've got a GraphLink cable (or silver cable, whatever the USB cable's called these days) you can take your own screenshots on WabbitEmu, TilEm2, PindurTI, etc.

I call it The Cable.
I just like to do screenshots, but whoever gets to it first does it :)

JWinslow (JWins) and I were talking about working together, since he also deals in Axe.

I heard that Axe is not compatible with the CSE. If that's the case, then this project is ax'd (no pun intended).

No, don't cancel this! Ask someone with knowledge of z80 to help you on a CSE version! Just please...

Maybe you could do the remake in Axe for monochrome calcs? Since I have the CSE, I have no way to make or test this. I'll try working on using as many features as possible in the original version.

Wait, you don't have a monochrome calc ? How did you pull off the monochrome version then ? O.O

I had other people test it (JWins. CVSoft and princetonlion [for the gif]), and I just had the dimensions of the screen on memory.

Excepting Full, there's nothing Axe provides that doesn't work on 83+s.
Even with Full, the program would still run fine on the 83+. It would just run over twice slower.

Anyway I hope that isn't cancelled or anything, as it would be nice to see an Axe remake. If the Axe remake comes to fruition, will it feature the full game including map exploration or will it just be a battle arena like when Persona 4 was ported from the PS2/Vita to the PS3?

Also the CSE version could simply use xLIBC, although that can be a bit confusing to use.

I'm not really in charge of this anymore, JWins is if he chooses so (so it's not cancelled). I don't see why it won't include map exploration, since I don't see why JWins (if he chooses to run the development) would throw out the existing map exploration code.

Well, actually, I would be CREATING the code. But it shouldn't be too hard. :)

I'll try to make it as much like the original as possible, to start it out.

Ah ok I was wondering, since Axe is sometimes seen as much harder than BASIC by certain people, so they might be tempted to remove features in their games or as some people would say, "take the lazy route" :P. Kinda like what Atlus did with Persona 4 PS3. :P

I would really appreciate it if you at least added the features in the OP, and if you want I can lock this and you can make your own topic.

Sounds nice to me. :)

I'm going to study the game, inside and out. And this time, I'll focus first on the levels, not the text stuff. That's what derailed my 83+ only remake. x.x

As long as the idea's the same :P

I'll try to download and (attempt to) optimize the original. Don't know too much axe anyways, unless you want sound (which, I at least know the syntax :P)
